est Islip High School student and cancer survivor Kyle Dorr held a cancer awareness event in May, raising $1,150 in funds for the Cancer Center for Kids at Winthrop University Hospital in Mineola. Dorr, who will start his junior year in September, is a survivor of leukemia and still receives his care at the Cancer Center. The Dorr family seeks to raise awareness for childhood cancers and donations for the facility.

My Secret Life With all the fuss over this new film, “The Secret Life of Pets,” I thought it only appropriate to provide my own account of this socalled hidden existence we all allegedly cultivate when our humans are away. First off, (spoiler alert) I have never taken to the sewers or made my way to Brooklyn looking for adventure. No, my exploration is confined to the four corners of my aquatic kingdom, where I examine every leaf of my plant and inspect each piece of gravel daily; you know, just to see if anything has changed overnight. While my human feeds me twice a day, I must say the time between meals could be a bit closer. What she does for all those hours in between, I’ll never know. I’ve often thought
I would like to tag along, but the pet store told her I might be susceptible to something called “motion sickness” in the car. Since I can’t go along, I do my best to entertain her whenever she enters the room, in the hope that she might linger just a bit longer. I perform my tricks for her, everything from diving for flakes the moment she drops them in the tank to giving little “love pecks” on her finger when she even so much as touches the water. Sometimes it works, and she’ll stay and have her cereal while perched on the counter next to me; but most times, it’s just some nonsense about “running late” and “see you later Buddy.” The only quality time my human and I have is when she’s busy cooking.

Then, I have a front row seat to all the pretty preparation. Honestly, my life is fairly dull and repetitive, not exactly the stuff of fine cinema. Well, except for that one time with Squeegee the Snail – but I digress. Mostly, it’s a lot of laps and fanning my fins to see if they’ve grown back sufficiently (still a work in progress, but coming along nicely). Too bad I couldn’t tag along for the movie. Maybe I’ll catch it on TV when it comes around. Hope my human still has that portable bowl for me to travel in. West Islip High School student and cancer survivor Kyle Dorr held a cancer awareness event in May, raising $1,150 in funds for the Cancer Center for Kids at Winthrop University Hospital in Mineola. Dorr, who will start his junior year in September, is a survivor of leukemia and still receives his care at the Cancer Center. Seeking to raise awareness for childhood cancers
and donations for the facility, he reached out for support to school and district administrators and teachers. The Dorr family donated silicone bracelets that read, “West Islip Lions Stand Up to Cancer,” that he designed himself. “Kyle is one of the most determined students I know,” said Sharon Kerrigan, the high school’s nurse, who assisted him in the project along with the school’s West Islip
Students with HEARTT club. In addition to the monies raised for the Cancer Center, which he presented to a hospital representative in June, Dorr and the staff at the district’s Beach Street Middle School also raised money for a local student who is just starting his battle with cancer. Said Dorr, “I am a patient at the Cancer Center for Kids at Winthrop
University Hospital, an amazing place for children fighting the hardest fight of their life, cancer. I decided to hold this fundraiser to give back to the wonderful people that saved my life. The center is full of great people: physicians, a clinical psychologist, child life specialists and a music therapist. This is a truly wonderful place for children fighting the battle with cancer.”

Dr. Kevin D. Jordan, a resident of Bay Shore, has joined Farmingdale State College as Director of the Educational Opportunity Program (EOP). Dr. Jordan joins Farmingdale with more than 25 years of experience in higher education, specializing in student support services. He previously had been
Assistant Dean for Student Development and Campus Life at CUNY LaGuardia Community College, and Dean of Academic Support Services at Dowling College. His background includes management roles and oversight of multiple student support programs such as HEOP (Higher Education Opportunity
Programs) and Federal TRIO Programs. Dr. Jordan holds degrees from Princeton University in psychology and African American studies and Union Theological Seminary in practical theology. He earned a doctorate in Educational Administration, Leadership and Technology from Dowling
College. Dr. Jordan says he has “a passion for providing educational opportunity for at-risk students where an undercurrent of talent and potential awaits to be tapped.” The EOP at Farmingdale State College is designed to provide the opportunity of a college education to capable students who are
historically disadvantaged due to limited financial resources and inadequate academic preparation. Throughout their years at Farmingdale, EOP students are provided ongoing support services and resources to help insure their collegiate success.
