PSEG Employee Whips Up Brunch Volunteers from PSEG Long Island are really cooking. Recently, some of the utility’s Transmission and Distribution control room operators, including Joseph Bosch of West Islip, prepared a brunch spread for nearly 100 guests at Ronald McDonald House of Long Island (RMHLI). At least once a month, employees from the utility volunteer to cook for families staying at the not-for-profit facility while their children receive hospital care nearby. Hauling in nearly 100 eggs and all the fixings for a protein-packed meal, the team converged on the two adjacent RMHLI kitchens and filled the rooms with the same kind of focused energy they bring to operating the electrical grid. When all was said and done, the group presented a buffet of scrambled eggs, waffles and pancakes, bacon and sausage, fresh fruit salad, chicken Caesar salad, fresh croissants and muffins, bringing families together from throughout the facility. Guests appreciated the meal provided by PSEG Long Island volunteers and the volunteers appreciated
the opportunity to make life a little better for families in a stressful situation. “There is always someone who can use a helping hand,” said Bosch, a West Islip resident. “Ronald McDonald House provides a great service to folks who are focused on their loved ones and may not take the time out for themselves to eat. What a great feeling to be a PSEG Long Island volunteer and have the opportunity to prepare a fresh meal for families going through a tough time.” Bosch and the other volunteers’ efforts supported RMHLI’s Meals from the Heart, a program that gives local businesses, community organizations, and other groups the opportunity to plan and prepare “homecooked” meals for families staying at RMHLI while their children receive hospital care. For years, PSEG Long Island has supported this program, which permits families of sick children to focus on the care of their children rather than worrying about how and what to feed the rest of their family. PSEG Long Island is
committed to giving back to the people and communities it serves by actively supporting hundreds of local charity events each year through the company’s Community Partnership Program. Last year, PSEG Long Island employees logged 26,000 service hours, volunteering at 1,145 fundraising and community events to support more than 400 organizations. The Charity of the Month for July is: Rebuilding Together Long Island

Rebuilding Together Long Island (RTLI) is a non-profit 501(c)(3) organization that is an affiliate of the national organization, Rebuilding Together. RTLI works yearround with their focus on keeping people safe in their home, as well as making sure that they have safe access into their home. While most of their clients are elderly, they will help anyone who meets their income guidelines and classify as low-income with limited assets. Additionally, they have a special program to help our deserving veterans in need. As a way to thank them for their service, they created the Hero Home Improvement Program, which aligns with their mission of repairing homes, revitalizing communities and rebuilding lives.
Their President Stella Hendrickson relates calling their organization for help to calling a neighbor. She mentioned, “Calling Rebuilding Together Long Island for help is like calling that person in your neighborhood that we all wish we had. You know the one...the one who is always working around his house and yard and seems to know how to take care of all the many little things that need to be taken care before they turn into major issues. That’s who the volunteers of RTLI are. They are your neighbors, retired from all walks of life and looking to help others and the communities of Long Island be safer and better. Some were teachers and principals, some engineers, some were IT professionals. They are a mixture of professions, but they all have one common goal, which is to help those in need.” Does your home have working smoke alarms, or have you removed the batteries because they were old and “chirping”? Not to worry, RTLI has batteries with a 10-year life span. Do you need grab bars to help eliminate nasty falls and a dreaded costly hospitalization? No problem, they’ll take care of it. Do you need a wheelchair ramp so that you can leave your home safely? RTLI can
You may be wondering how this organization does all of this for free. Some of their program funds come through grants and corporations, but some also come from everyday people like you and me. RTLI does not receive government funding. They do so much for the community and because they are an organization of volunteers, they can do a lot with a little and make every dollar count. If you would like to make a donation to this organization you can do so by sending it to: Rebuilding Together Long Island, 208 Route 109, Suite 204, Farmingdale, NY 11735 or by a credit card at rebuildingtogetherlongisland. org/make-a-donation. Additionally, they are looking for volunteers to work hands on with a crew performing home repair work. Individuals do not have to have specific handyman skills because training is available. (All volunteers must be at least 18 years old.) They are also looking for a licensed Plumber or Electrician to volunteer their time and skills to help on specific projects. Lastly, they are in need of home visitors to walk through the homes of needy individuals for a safety inspection. If you’re an employer you can call them and see how you can sponsor a project and have your staff participate in a day of service. This organization performs repairs including carpentry, electrical, plumbing and home modifications (including wheelchair ramps for the physically challenged), weatherization, installation of smoke alarms, back and front yard clean-ups and more. Since 1992 they have provided repairs to over 2,600 homeowners in need at a current pace of over 150 projects annually within Nassau and Suffolk.

Assemblyman Mike LiPetri (R-Massapequa) announced the success of his Brain Games seminar that took place at the West Islip Public Library on Thursday, June 27. The event, part of a series hosted by Gina Calabrese from Reset + Now, LLC, provides an innovative approach to mental fitness and focuses on cognition and memory training for middleaged and older adults. “I was pleased to see so many residents eager to sharpen their cognition and learn some challenging brain training techniques at our first of many Brain Games events,” LiPetri said. “So much emphasis is placed on how we look and feel physically but improving mental focus and memory capacity can contribute to a fantastic quality of life as well, especially as we age. Thank you Gina Calabrese for hosting the presentation and all who participated.”

Narra Wins Top Ribbon Paisley Narra, a 16 year old West Islip High School student, competed at the Mars Essex Horse Trials on June 23, 2019 at Moorland Farm in Far Hills, New Jersey. This competition known as eventing and is considered an equestrian triathlon. It is comprised of three phases, dressage, show jumping and cross county.
Paisley competed with her pony, Huckleberry, a 13-year-old Morgan cross. Her individual scores in each event are calculated for a final score. Paisley and Huckleberry took first place and received a blue ribbon which qualifies them for the American Eventing Championships in Kentucky later this summer.
In addition to placing on top, Paisley won the Golden Nugget Award, donated by Clarissa Wilmerding for the lowest scoring pony club member (18 and younger). Paisley is a long-standing member and volunteer of the Olde Suffolk Pony Club of the United States Pony Clubs. Pony Club is for children, adults and horses (not just
ponies) and members do not need to own a horse. It focuses on education, safety, horsemanship and fun through mounted and unmounted events and competitions. Paisley attributes her success to her Pony Club experiences
where she was first introduced to eventing. Paisley began riding when she was six years old and is a student of Christina Tobacco-Weber of A to XC Equestrian in Huntington, NY. Paisley participates in many professional clinics,
competes in local, regional and national equestrian competitions. She has received varsity letters from the United States Equestrian Federation for her athleticism and participation in the sport.
