The seminar brought together government agencies, nonprofit organizations, advocates, veterans and their families to exchange information about how to access and manage available services, benefits and assistance. Presentations addressed a broad range of topics, including housing, health, financial services, education, employment, business development, estate planning, selfhelp and legal services. A sea of blue and gold and white filled West Islip High School’s stadium on a sunny Saturday morning, as the graduating Class of 2016 moved forward with their lives in a celebratory June 25th commencement ceremony. Following the presentation of colors

by the American Legion West Islip Post No. 1738, Student Senate Presidents Marisa Benedetto and Tara Zanni led a salute to the flag. Rachel Swenson sang the national anthem, and music was provided by the school’s graduation ensemble, conducted by David Kaufman and

William Willis. “I appreciate you today, as when I first met you all four years ago, only today, I appreciate you more,” said Dr. Anthony Bridgeman, the principal, as he looked out at the rows of excited new graduates. “Go cultivate your lives, and grow them with the

roots of what you planted when your first came here as freshmen,” he told them. “Grow in curiosity, strength and contribution. Grow in hope. Grow in tolerance. Grow in learning. Grow in giving. Continue to grow, my friends, and the ripples of your impact will continue to mark the fabric of our community.” Valedictorian James Khoury compared the challenges the graduates face with his favorite television cooking shows, and urged his fellow students to explore their originality and ingenuity. “In any situation, once the guidelines are understood, I believe it’s necessary to venture off from a strictly traditional

safe approach,” Khoury said. “It’s vital to instead to take small leaps of faith. While our education in West Islip Public Schools has given us the tools and knowledge to problem solve and think collaboratively, we need to be willing to break away from our past, to let go a little bit, to wet our beaks in foreign waters, to navigate uncharted territory, to cross our fingers and be confident in our decision to trek forward into uncertainty. To jump right in and make that savory dish from the ingredients life unexpectedly throws our way.” “It is unbelievable how fast four years have gone by and how much we have all changed and evolved

from freshman year,” said salutatorian Hannah Kim in her address. “All we are given is this infinitesimal sliver in the time continuum to make a name for ourselves to create a legacy. Whether that legacy is born from years upon years of research as in the case of Einstein, or fleeting moments like crossing the finish line at the Olympics, it all the same withstands the test of time. The legacy of the Class of 2016 is the courage and dedication we all possess and used in reaching this point in our lives.” Superintendent Bernadette Burns used her own recent college reunion as a source of reflection to advise the Class of 2016.

We can all use a little sunshine in our lives. No matter how happy we may be, there is always room for more. It is a life source, a beacon of positivity, light, warmth – all features whose benefits have the ability to make daily life that much more fulfilling. Sure, not everyone is a “summer” person. But I don’t know of too many who fail to embrace the positive qualities a little daylight provides. Come winter, spring, summer or autumn, the sun shines on, allowing all those who wish to bask in its glow. Don’t get me wrong. I love a good thunderstorm just as much as the next person. There is something about inclement weather which

affords the easy excuse to be just a bit more unproductive than when the sun is shining brightly. One doesn’t feel so guilty sleeping a little later, pushing aside some of those errands, saving that running around for another day. To everything, and everyone, there is a season. Luckily for us, we have four distinct ones to enjoy – or count the days down until they pass – whichever method you prefer. For me, I say it is always better to appreciate that time rather than wish it away. Six months ago, we were checking off the days until summer vacation and beach weather and all the rest that comes with extended hours of sunshine was to arrive. And six months from now, we shall

be doing the same. Such is the circle of life. Personally, I make it my mission to witness as many sunsets as possible and – though it pains me to “rise and shine” quite that early – even my fair share of sunrises. There is something quite magical about the dawning of a new day; same with the golden glow which overtakes the landscape as the sun prepares to dip below the horizon. So go outside, take a walk, absorb your surroundings. Take it all in. Allow the warmth of the sun to touch your soul. It’s the most natural form of healing we have, and it’s there for the taking. Embrace it. Happy Summer to all.

Good Samaritan Hospital recognized its Junior Volunteer Scholarship Winners with a reception on June 14th, in the St. Agatha Conference Room in an event that included the Guild Executive Board members, Standing Committee members, members at large and department staff that benefitted from the services of the winning junior volunteers. Winners included: Jacob Cordero from West Babylon who donated

nearly 200 hours in Concierge/Transport and participated in Blood Drives, events and thrift shop projects. Jacob will study bio-chemistry at Delhi University in the fall. Caelyn Reilly from Bay Shore High School donated nearly 180 hours in the Gift Shop, Pediatrics and special projects. Caelyn will study at Johns Hopkins and aspires to be a physician. Meaghan Weihs from West Islip High School donated nearly 150 hours in the Ambulatory Surgery

Department and helped with special projects. Meaghan is going into the nursing program at Farmingdale State University. The three graduating Junior Volunteers each received $1,500 scholarships for their work at Good Samaritan. Scholarships are fully funded through donation boxes located in the hospital’s gift shop, thrift shop, coffee shop and employee cafeteria.
