Trio Earn All-County Honors West Islip High School athletes Kimberly Arena, Andrew Paules and Isabella Rogler recently earned All-County honors at the Suffolk County track and field championships. Arena broke her own school record and cleared 10 feet,

6 inches in the pole vault, Paules ran a 10:07.15 in the 3,000-meter steeplechase, and Rogler was county champion in the 1,500-meter race walk with an impressive time of 6:57. “Congratulations to

the track All-County performers and coaches Mike DiStefano, Nick Grieco, Jeremy Robertson and John Lavery on these impressive accomplishments,” said Athletic Director Tim Horan.

Rebuilding Together Long Island is a non-profit 501(c)(3) organization. They are an affiliate of the national organization, Rebuilding Together. They provide free home repairs to the frail and elderly, our veterans, people with d i s a b i l i t i e s and families with children. Those who receive the free home repairs must have met their financial criteria. Their mission as an organization is to repair homes, revitalize communities and rebuild lives. They help Long Island’s economicallydisadvantaged homeowners so they can live in comfort and safety while maintaining their independence (RTLI does not service the Hamptons). RTLI was founded in 1992 by a small group of volunteers that were eager to help needy homeowners. Today they have one paid employee and 200 volunteers, which are the heart and soul of their organization. Their experienced volunteers perform the vast majority of the work they do and they come from all walks of life. This organization performs repairs including carpentry, electrical, plumbing and home modifications (including wheelchair ramps for the physically challenged), weatherization, installation of smoke alarms, back and front yard clean-up and more. Since 1992 they have provided repairs to over 2,600 homeowners in need at a current pace of over 150 projects annually within Nassau and Suffolk. Seeing improvement in the lives of Long Island residents is truly what makes all the hard-work from this organization worth it. There are countless testimonials from those who have received help from Rebuilding Together Long Island. Recently the organization received a letter of thanks for all their help that was extremely touching. The sender wrote, “I just want to reach out again to thank all involved with the preparation and construction of the ramp for my dad. It has been a sincere pleasure; from the first meeting with Marian and Kathy, to meeting Joe and coming up with the plan, and then witnessing the building process. The crew were all so wonderful and inspiring! I was amazed at how quickly and smoothly it all came together! Not only is the ramp functional, it’s beautiful and brightens up the dark patio! It was a great moment when I first wheeled my father down the driveway, onto the sidewalk, and

he raised up his arms with a big smile and loudly exclaimed “Hello world, I’m here!” I can hear my mom saying “God is good” and I want to add, thank God for good people.” With the support of all of their many volunteers and partners, Rebuilding Together Long Island has become a wellregarded organization, recognized for their work with rehabbing houses, the building and installation of ramps for those in need and their involvement with communities and organizations that span across Long Island. They need your help to keep up the momentum! There are four main ways you can get involved with their organization: 1) Volunteer. They are looking for volunteers to work hands on with a crew performing home repair work. Individuals do not have to have specific handyman skills, training is available. All volunteers must be at least 18 years old. Additionally, they are looking for a licensed Plumber or Electrician to volunteer their time and skills to help on specific projects. Lastly, they are in need of home visitors to walk through the homes of needy individuals for a safety inspection. 2) Sponsor a Project. RTLI allows corporations to sponsor a project so they can see a positive impact on the life of a senior, veteran, disabled person or a family in need. This is a great opportunity team building and a community leadership opportunity for your employees. Why not demonstrate your organization’s commitment to community service and improving the quality of life on Long Island! 3) Attend a Meeting. Meetings are held on the first Wednesday of every month at their office located at 208 Route 109, Suite 204 in Farmingdale at 10 am. 4) Donate. Consider making a donation to their organization. First Unified Basketball Season

Maresca Earns Scholarship

West Islip High School recently kicked off its first unified basketball season with great success. The unified basketball team is composed of co-ed students from grades 9-12 and combines players with intellectual disabilities and

those without intellectual disabilities on the same court against similar competition. Under the direction of teacher Phil DePompeo and social worker Erin Bies, aided by student volunteers, the team has demonstrated

tremendous teamwork and growth. “The introduction of this team has enriched social interactions among the student body and has elevated school spirit,” said Athletic Director Tim Horan.

West Islip High School student Jake Maresca was one of a dozen Suffolk County seniors to receive a $2,000 scholarship and gift from the Association of Suffolk Supervisors for Educational Technology at a May 23 ceremony.

Each year ASSET offers this award annually to 10 to 12 deserving students who will be entering into higher education and studying fields that integrate technology. “After viewing the recipients’ video

applications, all of those attending were able to witness how Jake’s passion for robotics has shaped what he hopes to continue in his higher education pursuits,” said Reanna Fulton, West Islip’s director of technology.
