Scanlon’s Traveling Salon is run by Eileen Scanlon, a fellow New Yorker whose mission is to cultivate a community based on kindness, respect and equality. Eileen has been a NYS Licensed Cosmetologist for over 30 years, however she has experience in many other industries as well. She has worked with corporate America, non-profits, academia and local grassroots organizations. She is wellrounded and truly one of the kindest people I have ever met. In 2010, Eileen began volunteering, offering free haircuts to people in need. Eileen felt so overjoyed by helping others look and feel beautiful for free while working within various types of socio economic communities, that she eventually began her very own traveling salon. With its catchy slogan, Where Style Comes To You, Scanlon’s Traveling Salon now serves an abundance of people across Long Island. Some of the communities that Eileen serves are: the home confined and vulnerable, hospice, group homes, sober houses, assisted living communities and those who are differently abled. She always travels to her customers so they can enjoy her services in the comfort of their home or living space. Her goal is to provide each and every one of her clients with a warm, happy, positive and empathetic experience before, during and after each visit. She also incorporates her love of social justice and advocacy into her business practice by using only vegan products. Unlike your average hair salon, Scanlon’s uses fresh new sanitized tools and capes on all her clients. She now also offers one on one personal service with gloves and masks, and will wash and sanitize any area which was touched during the visit. Additionally, if you would like to have your hair service done outside, Scanlon’s will gladly honor that request. “Everyone’s safety and comfort is our primary concern”, says owner Eileen Scanlon. Scanlon’s business model was always unique and special, however with everyone adjusting to the new normal, her services are becoming more and more desired. A young woman who loves Eileens services mentioned, “Being able to call up an experienced local and friendly hair

dresser during times like these where I am not comfortable going to a salon is so comforting. She will come to my house and give me a hair cut outside if I want. It doesn’t get much more refreshing than that.” Mary D. from Massapequa, a long-time client of Eileens also has only good things to share; “I live with a crippling disability and getting out is a challenge for me, especially in inclement weather. I’ve been using Eileen’s service for about 7 years now and I would not go back to a salon anytime soon. If I ever need anything from the store before she arrives I simply call her and she will pick it up for me. I live alone and if a light bulb goes out or I need to reach something in a closet that requires my mini ladder I feel comfortable asking Eileen to reach it for me. She is also looking for a donation of a minibus (which can be used) for the non-profit traveling salon and her outreach work for the homeless. Scanlon’s vehicles are all easily identified because they are decorated with salon decals and sponsorship information from local businesses. Members of the community have been reaching out and asking how they can help the healthcare professionals and those afflicted with COVID-19 pandemic. One very important way: we need an influx of iPads to keep our inpatients connected to their providers and their families. Anyone who has an iPad that is not being used, please consider donating to Stony Brook University Hospital. We will repurpose the donated device to provide telecommunication for our patients to connect with our medical staff. We are looking for about one

hundred devices of a supported iPad model. Before donation, the device should be cleaned, reset, and placed in a zip lock bag if possible with a viable power chord. It takes a team effort to convert these devices into a secure patient friendly solution. We will do our best to make your gift count and give someone comfort during these remarkable times. The donations of medical supplies and comfort care items such as gum, lip balm, tissues and snacks have been pouring in and we appreciate

the community’s response. We’ve also received many video messages of support and are sharing those throughout the hospital. Please keep them coming!
