Bethel Hobbs Community Farm is a non-profit organization with a rich history. It is an 11 acre farm, located at 178 Oxhead Road in Centereach, and is ran entirely by volunteers. This community farm grows and harvests an average of over 50,000 pounds of fresh, organic produce, which then gets donated to over 11 food pantries / soup kitchens. They also offer CSA Memberships, educational programs, they host community events and they have a seasonal farm stand! If you live nearby the farm and would like to sign up for their Summer and or Fall CSA program, you can. Their crop shares are an easy way to guarantee farm fresh veggies for you and your family all season long. By joining their CSA program you will gain a connection to their farm and know exactly where your vegetables are coming from. You will receive a weekly share of nutritionally dense produce grown right in Centereach, while supporting your own neighbors. Their organically grown vegetables are harvested and packed the same day you receive them, cutting time and travel dramatically from field to fork. Members of their Summer CSA can expect to receive a wide variety of summer vegetables, including but not limited to, summer squashes, tomatoes, peppers, eggplants, cucumbers and a diverse array of greens. Organics Today Farm is a small organic farm is East Islip, which grows non GMO organic produce that you can trust. Their farm stand is open to the public every day. They are proud to have made it through the pandemic and continue to serve their community today. “Just a year ago supermarkets were running out of meat, poultry and produce. We fed people with lots of food during those tough times; even for free when someone was our of work and in trouble financially”, says owner Mike. “I continued to work every single day, seven days a week so people could come to my farm and get the food they needed, while keeping everything extremely sanitary to protect the lives of my customers.” The farm runs various programs for the community such as Field Trips, Gardening Classes and Bee-Keeping Classes. Their Work For Food program is also another way the community can become involved; the program allows people to volunteer their time and contribute as few or as many hours as desired, in replace for a bundle of fresh organic food. Both John Adams, the second President of the United States, and his successor Thomas Jefferson passed away on July 4, 1826. But as time wore on, each man developed a different view of what the United States government should be, creating a rift in their relationship that was only widened by the 1800 presidential election. The men ran against each other in that election, which is still considered one

of the more contentious elections in American history. Jefferson ultimately claimed victory, a result so unnerving to Adams that he left Washington, D.C. prior to Jefferson’s inauguration. The two men would ultimately reconcile, exchanging more than 150 letters before dying within hours of one another on Independence Day in 1826.

It’s often said that some of the best ideas are born of necessity and that’s certainly the case with “Camp Color: Summer HumanitiesEnrichment for Middle School Students.” The plan began to gel when teachers Nadine Palumbo and Anthony Vittorino were discussing the detrimental effects of social distancing guidelines, hybrid learning, and a loss of extracurricular activities. “We each witnessed formerly engaged students shutting down and checking out emotionally by turning off their cameras screens and becoming passive,” said Palumbo, adding that “Countless family friends have also addressed concerns about their children’s ‘pandemic slide’ and feelings of depression.” They started testing out different formats, such as a distance-learning talk show to interview artists and authors about their creative process during the pandemic, but that seemed better suited only for high school level remote learning. 101-YEAR-OLD VETERAN RECOGNIZED - Legislator Steven J. Flotteron recognized Estelle Kaczanowski as the 2021 honoree of Suffolk County’s Women Veterans Appreciation Day for the 11th Legislative District. Ms. Kaczanowski, better known as Stel by her friends and family, has had a long life of dedication to both her country and career. She will turn 102 on August 11th. She lives in the West Islip house where she was born and raised with her six siblings. Stel never married but has had a life of commitment to her career and family. Stel served her country during World War II earning the rank of Nurse – 1st Lieutenant for the Army from April, 1945 to September, 1947 and her bravery and dedication continued throughout her chosen career as a nurse. She was stationed at Fort Sills in Oklahoma and Fort Hood in Texas. In 1940, she was the first nurse hired at Southside Hospital in Bay Shore working in Labor and Delivery and one of the first nurses at Good Samaritan Hospital in West Islip in 1959 until retiring in 1981 where she was in charge of the Maternity Unit. “Stel has kept very active since retiring and continues to be a vital member of the community, said Legislator Flotteron. She is an inspiration to all women who have selfishly served their country.”

Town of Babylon Supervisor Rich Schaffer, Deputy Supervisor Tony Martinez and the rest of the Babylon Town Board recently recognized a young town resident who published a children’s workbook earlier this year. Favour Okodogbe, 16, of Amityville, is a senior at St. John the Baptist Diocesan High School in West Islip, and will be attending the California Institute of Technology on a full-ride this fall. Okodogbe will study Computer Science and Business Economics and Management, and is the first student from

her high school to attend Caltech. Okodogbe’s parents, Rev. Victor Okodogbe and Pastor Maryqueen Okodogbe are co-pastors of the Mount Zion Gospel Tabernacle Church in West Babylon. Earlier this year, Okodogbe published a children’s workbook, A Workbook Just For You, which contains material for any child between the ages of 1-7. From ABCs to 123s, the workbook covers all the basics of what a child needs upon entering school. Okodogbe skipped the 1st grade as a child and is now headed to college in

California at the age of 16. She published the book in hopes of inspiring children to learn like she did at a young age. Fun Facts About Lefties Left-handed, lefty, southpaw - these are all terms used to describe people who favor their left hands for writing, throwing a ball and myriad other activities. It is estimated that between 10 and 12 percent of all people are left-handed. Although that makes southpaws an undeniable minority, the number of lefthanded people is creeping up. Sports Proclivity Being left-handed may confer an advantage for athletes. Wayne Gretzky, Sandy Koufax and Martina Navratilova are just a few

of the many accomplished lefthanded sports legends. Sports scientist Florian Loffing with the Institute of Sport Science, University of Oldenburg in Germany found that in sports where there is a short time constraint, lefties appeared to excel. That could be why he found 26 percent of the top male players in table tennis are lefties. And sports like baseball and cricket are dominated by left-handed players. Health Risks And Benefits According to a 2010 study

published in the journal Pediatrics, researchers found those who were left-handed had an increased risk for dyslexia, ADHD and certain mood disorders. It could be tied to the hemispheres of the brain and how 30 percent of left-handed people are partial to the right hemisphere or have no dominant hemisphere for language functioning. Conversely, lefties can bounce back from stroke or other brainrelated injuries more readily than righties, according to data published in 2015 in Scientific

Reports. A study published in Laterality found that left-handed people are less likely to suffer arthritis and ulcers. More Creative Lefties are more likely to be artistic or innovative. Research published in the American Journal of Psychology found there is some evidence that left-handed people are better at divergent thinking, a method of idea generation that explores many possible solutions. The Left-Handers Club, a pro-lefty advocacy group, also found that

left-handed individuals tend to be drawn to careers in the arts, music, sports, and informationtechnology fields. Ambidextrous Inclinations The world is geared towards being right-handed, with buttons on jackets, doorknobs, desks in school, and more designed with right-handed people in mind. Therefore, many lefties become ambidextrous simply because they have to, according to data published in Reader’s Digest.

According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, more than half a million nurses are expected to retire by 2022. Couple that with an existing nursing shortage, and the BLS projects a need for 1.1 million registered nurses in the near

future. A shortage also figures to affect Canada, where the Canadian Nurses Association recently estimated that the country would be forced to confront a nursing shortage of roughly 60,000 nurses by 2022. Various factors are contributing to the nursing shortage in both countries, including an increasingly

large aging population that will require more and more nurses to meet its health care needs. In the United States, the Affordable Care Act, which was passed in 2010, increased access to health care for millions of people across the country, thereby creating a greater need for nurses and other

health care professionals. In addition, a greater emphasis on preventive care in many countries across the globe figures to compel more people to visit their physicians even when they’re otherwise feeling healthy. As more people prioritize preventive care, the need for more nurses will likely increase.

The Beneﬁts Of Leisure Activities Leisure activities may be widely viewed as fun ways to fill up free time, but the benefits of leisure activities extend beyond beating boredom. A 2011 analysis published in the journal BBA Molecular Basis of Disease found that leisure activities have a positive impact on

cognitive function and dementia. The analysis, conducted by researchers with the Aging Research Center in Stockholm who examined various studies regarding the relationship between certain activities and cognitive function, defined leisure activity

as the voluntary use of free time for activities outside the home. After retirement, leisure time constitutes a large part of many retirees’ lives, and finding ways to fill that time is more beneficial than merely avoiding boredom. The researchers behind the

study concluded that the existing research is insufficient to draw any firm conclusions regarding the effects of certain types of leisure activities on the risk for dementia and cognitive decline, though they did note that multi-domain cognitive training has

the potential to improve cognitive function in healthy older adults and slow decline in affected individuals. A multi-domain approach to cognitive training involves memory, reasoning, problemsolving, and map reading, among other

activities. Aging adults who embrace activities that require the use of such skills may find that they’re not only finding stimulating ways to fill their free time, but increasing their chances of long-term cognitive health as well.
