Top Male Athlete West Islip High School senior and champion diver Patrick Carter won the 2017 Butch Dellecave Award, honoring him as the top male studentathlete in Suffolk County. Carter was presented with the award, which recognizes excellence in athletics, academics and the community, at a June 11th ceremony at Villa Lombardi’s in Holbrook. He was the first West Islip
athlete to receive this award. Carter earned his second consecutive diving state title this year. During his high school career, he won five county championships and broke several diving records. He will attend the U.S. Naval Academy this fall. “When you reflect back on the outstanding student-athletes West Islip has had over the years, you
begin to realize what an incredible recognition this honor holds,” said Athletic Director Tim Horan. “West Islip is proud of Patrick and wishes him continued success as he moves on to the Naval Academy. I’d also like to give special recognition to his coaches, Bob Kollar and Karyn Storan, and to his teachers who have had a profound positive impact on his development.”

Visit from Socrates Socrates made a visit to an eighth-grade English class at West Islip’s Beach Street Middle School during its first Socratic Seminar of the year. After the class closely read Atticus Finch’s closing argument from the novel “To Kill a Mockingbird,” the students created their own open-ended questions to help them explore its deeper meaning. Many
questions dealt with specific aspects of the text, the writer’s craft and how the ideas in the text impact the students’ world. “Once the students became comfortable with the format, the discussion quickly changed to a conversation where they became more interested in where the questions led them, and less focused on what the answers
were,” said Principal Andrew O’Farrell. “They did a remarkable job. Two numbers to perform over two acts, including, appropriately enough, the grand finale to “One” from A Chorus Line. More than 150 Long Island community members and people with disabilities recently supported ACLD Foundation and the over 3,000 people that Bethpageheadquartered Adults and Children with Learning and Developmental Disabilities, Inc. (ACLD) serves each year by participating in ACLD Foundation’s Second Annual Walk/Run: Journey To An Enviable Life at Heckscher State Park in East Islip, where the event raised more than $31,000 benefiting ACLD programs and services. The activities kicked-off with opening remarks from ACLD Executive Director Robert C. Goldsmith, followed by a pre-run stretch and warmup led by HOPEFitness, a fitness and sports training center that provides classes and fitness programs for participants who are physically or intellectually challenged. Twin brothers, Joseph Daleo and Dominic Daleo, members of the West Islip High School Class of 2017, were each recently awarded the SchoolBusiness Partnerships of Long Island, Inc.’s Annual Fred Breithut Scholarship. Presented in cooperation with Farmingdale State College, the award is presented to former FIRST® (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) Robotics Competition students entering the college to pursue a degree in a STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) field. Joseph and Dominic plan to pursue degrees in Electrical Engineering Technology and Mechanical Engineering, respectively. The brothers were each presented with a scholarship offering $1,000 per semester for up to four years. Each met the stringent requirements of this award which included their steadfast participation on West Islip High School’s FIRST Robotics Competition Team (#871) the “Robotechs.” Though twins, and despite their shared commitment to FIRST, the brothers took on very different roles on the team. For Joseph, community service has continually been a driving force. During his time on the team, Joseph organized
several important initiatives for the team. This was most obvious in the community cleanups he arranged for his teammates to lead – such as those for Adopt-A-Highway and the West Islip Country Fair. Joseph has been a pillar of the community outside of school as well, as he offers his free time to various other service projects, such as serving as a Junior Firefighter for the West Islip Fire Department, providing meals to those in need and performing in a band that plays at a local senior center. On the other hand, Dominic went the leadership route and his dedication earned him a spot as one of the team captains. In this role, Dominic flourished by teaching his teammates to use the machines, such as a lathe and a mill, to build the parts necessary for each season’s robot. In addition to being intensely

The Marty Lyons Foundation, now in its 35th year, is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization founded by Marty Lyons, a former NFL defensive lineman for the New York Jets and member of the legendary “New York Sack Exchange.” Marty Lyons was forced to “see
the frailty, unfairness and wonder of life”, after experiencing three lifealtering events in March of 1982. He was determined to establish a Foundation that would garner hope to children who were fighting unthinkable battles. With the encouragement of his family and friends, he formed the Marty Lyons Foundation in December of 1982. Since that time the organization has worked to keep hope alive in the hearts of thousands of children and provide support to their families. MLF is unique in that it will consider granting a
second wish to a deserving child who may need the inspiration to face the battle of their lives for the second time around. Since it was established, The Marty Lyons Foundation has granted 7,300 wishes that have brightened the lives of countless children. By playing a fun-filled day of golf or attending the dinner, supporters help provide the Foundation with the much needed resources to fulfill its mission of granting children their special wishes. While golf foursomes are at a premium, you are
