While flowers certainly add beauty and a wonderful aroma to wedding ceremonies and receptions, there are other reasons behind their inclusion in such festivities. In ancient Rome, brides carried or wore flower garlands because the Romans believed flowers signified hope, fertility and new beginnings. In the Middle Ages, brides did not carry flowers, but rather strong-smelling spices and herbs. The rationale was that the herbs and spices would drive away bad luck and evil spirits. Flowers also served another practical purpose. In eras when bathing was a luxury, different flowers and herbs helped mask body odors. It wasn't until the Victorian era, when flowers were used to symbolize romantic love, that they became part of wedding ceremonies, according to Modern Weddings magazine.

Choosing a college major is an important decision that many students delay making until their sophomore or even junior years. Only after taking a few courses and uncovering one’s interests do some college students figure out what they want to do with their lives. Each student is different, and while some may pursue a degree based on a particular passion, others may choose majors that can lead to high-paying jobs. While men often lean toward majors like engineering and computer science that have traditionally been linked to high earnings, women have historically gravitated to lowerpaying specialties like education and social sciences, but in recent years a shift has

occurred, and more women have begun to choose majors associated with higher post-graduate salaries. Reports from the career guidance site Glassdoor analyzed how much male and female professionals with the same college degree earned and identified many instances in which women went on to earn more than men in the first five years of their career. They’ve identified several majors where female college graduates can earn as much or more than their male counterparts and find successful careers.

Scanlon’s Traveling Salon is run by Eileen Scanlon, a fellow New Yorker whose mission is to cultivate a community based on kindness, respect and equality. Eileen has been a NYS Licensed Cosmetologist for over 30 years, however she has experience in many other industries as well. She has worked with corporate America, non-profits, academia and local grassroots organizations. She is wellrounded and truly one of the kindest people I have ever met. In 2010, Eileen began volunteering, offering free haircuts to people in need. Eileen felt so overjoyed by helping others look and feel beautiful for free while working within various types of socio economic communities, that she eventually began her very own traveling salon. With its catchy slogan, Where Style Comes To You, Scanlon’s Traveling Salon now serves an abundance of people across Long Island. Some of the communities that Eileen serves are: the home confined and vulnerable, hospice, group homes, sober houses, assisted living communities and those who are differently abled. She always travels to her customers so they can enjoy her services in the comfort of their home or living space. Her goal is to provide each and every one of her clients with a warm, happy, positive and empathetic experience before, during and after each visit. She also incorporates her love of social justice and advocacy into her business practice by using only vegan products. Unlike your average hair salon, Scanlon’s uses fresh new sanitized tools and capes on all her clients. She now also offers one on one personal service with gloves and masks, and will wash and sanitize any area which was touched during the visit. Additionally, if you would like to have your hair service done outside, Scanlon’s will gladly honor that request. “Everyone’s safety and comfort is our primary concern”, says owner Eileen Scanlon. Scanlon’s business model was always unique and special, however with everyone adjusting to the new normal, her services are becoming more and more desired. Stony Brook University Hospital Accepting I-Pad Donation Members of the community have been reaching out and asking how they can help the healthcare professionals and those afflicted with COVID-19 pandemic. One very important way: we need an influx of iPads to keep our inpatients connected to their providers and their families. Anyone who has an iPad that is not being used, please consider donating to Stony Brook University Hospital. We will repurpose the donated device to provide telecommunication for our patients to connect with our medical staff. We are looking for about one

hundred devices of a supported iPad model. Before donation, the device should be cleaned, reset, and placed in a zip lock bag if possible with a viable power chord. It takes a team effort to convert these devices into a secure patient friendly solution. We will do our best to make your gift count and give someone comfort during these remarkable times. The donations of medical supplies and comfort care items such as gum, lip balm, tissues and snacks have been pouring in and we appreciate

After years of schooling that dates all the way back to preschool or kindergarten, newly minted college graduates are finally ready to begin their professional lives. That can be a scary prospect for some students, especially those who graduate without jobs lined up. The summer after graduating from college can be a time like no other in the lives of new graduates. It can be easy to grow dejected as weeks or months go by without receiving a job offer, but spending the summer after graduation as productively as possible can help graduates overcome any dejection they might feel and increase their chances of landing a job. • Contact career services offices at your alma mater. Career services offices can help recent graduates as they look for their first jobs out of college. Such offices may have access to job and internship opportunities that grads do not. In addition, they may coach grads on interviewing techniques and on ways to stand out in crowded job markets. • Seek internships. If part - or full-time employment is proving elusive, don’t be afraid to seek and ultimately accept internships, which can provide a way for grads to get their foot in the doors in certain industries. Long Island Drive-Thru Animal Tour. The family friendly, educational and social distancing experience will begin on Saturday, June 20 2020 with Spirit’s Promise Rescue (www.spiritspromiserescue. org) and North Shore Horse Rescue (www. northshorehorserescue. org). Every business has been impacted by COVID-19, within the equine industry this holds especially true for the equine rescues who operated on limited recourses prior to the pandemic. The ticketed drive-thru tour will provide these rescues with financial support to provide critical care to their animals that offer services ranging from equine therapy, recreation and jobs throughout the region. The young and the young at heart alike will have the opportunity to reconnect with nature and the farms four legged residents from the safety of their car. Families will enjoy fresh air while being educated about the animals history and will have access to a digital map on their smartphone which will showcase photos and fun facts about each animal. Online reservations are required, a face mask must be worn at all times and time slots are limited. Spirit’s Promise Rescue will be one of the first

locations providing this drive through experience on Saturday, June 20, 2020. Inspired by Spirit’s Promise Equine Rescues Hay For Horses Mobile Food Pantry hosted at Tanger Outlets Riverhead during Giving Tuesday on May 5, the Neptune Feed & Saddlery collaboration will support increasing the frequency of the horse mobile food pantry throughout all of Long Island for equine organizations going through economic challenges to receive free food for their animals. An economic impact study conducted by The American Horse Council shows that the New York state’s Equine Industry is the second largest agribusiness in New York, providing the state with $5.3 billion in economic impact generating 42,400 full-time jobs for New Yorkers. The horse industry also does its part for the preservation of

green space. Approximately 1.3 million acres are currently used for horserelated purposes, and the equine industry is active in every one of New York’s 62 counties. One Loose Balloon Can Really Rain On Your Car Parade June and July are filled with occasions to celebrate, including graduations, birthdays and Father’s Day. And while these celebrations have evolved into car parades and other events to maintain safe social distancing, one thing remains the same: Metallic party balloons can start fires and cause power outages if they drift into overhead electrical wires and equipment. “The safety of our customers and employees is PSEG Long Island’s top priority,” said John O’Connell, PSEG Long Island’s vice president of Transmission and Distribution Operations. “Mylar balloons add extra festivity to our celebrations, but when released, they do present a threat to our electrical system and the safety of those nearby. We all need reasons to celebrate these days, so let’s spread the word and make sure we don’t let a stray balloon get in the way of that.” The distinctive metallic coating on Mylar balloons conducts electricity. Because of this, when a Mylar balloon is exposed to a power line, it can cause a short circuit. This short circuit can lead to power outages, fires and possible injuries.
