The Long Island Coalition Against Bullying is holding its first annual golf outing on Friday, June 26th, with a 1:30 p.m. shotgun start at Rock Hill Golf & Country Club at 105 Clancy Road in Manorville. comment that it’s “such a beautiful day,” we are more often than not in a constant state of complaint. Sure, any extreme can be “too much” for some to handle; but, I think we’ve become so accustomed to the temperaturecontrolled bubbles that we live in that our sensitivity to such things is absurdly heightened. Seasons are designed to be enjoyed outdoors, at least for part of the time. Personally, I look forward to the warmth of spring and summer, the extended daylight hours and the ample activities available – from free concerts to baseball games to outdoor theatre and dance performances to

fireworks…the options are endless. The last thing I want to do is spend my time hibernating in a dimlylit, air-conditioned cave of sorts, one with all the windows shut, blinds drawn and outside world blocked out. No thank you. Let’s put things in perspective, people. We don’t live in a desert. We live on an island, one bordered by beaches on every coast. In between, there are lakes and rivers and plenty of pools of both the indoor and outdoor variety. I’m sure we can manage to survive a few months of summer. Maybe, if we really try, we might even manage to enjoy it.

The Art League of Long Island’s Summer Art Adventure, now in its 20th year welcomes fresh faces and fresh ideas for 2015. Under the guidance of new Summer Art Adventure Program Director Marianne Mead, the arts enrichment program that has served a generation of children has extended its weekly sessions for ages 5-14 from four weeks to six weeks of summer fun. New themes and approaches have been introduced in addition to offering longtime favorite activities. Formerly held at the Elwood Middle School and at the Art League’s center in Dix Hills, the six-week sessions will be held at the Chestnut Hill Elementary School in Dix Hills. Parents have the option of selecting one or more weekly sessions starting week of June 29th and ending week of August 3rd. From 9 to 11:30 a.m. young children ages 5 and 6 and from 9am to 2pm children and teens ages 7-12 will learn drawing, painting, crafts, and sculpture. Back again is “Animal Kingdom” week, where kids discover the art of working with live animals. Selmer’s Pet Land has brought smiles to the faces of young artists as their cooperative models

Club of the Moriches arranged a beach-side picnic for children with Polio. This inspired the founding of the official camp in 1948, when Camp Pa-Qua-Tuck held its first summer session for 25 children with Polio. Today, it continues to be a safe place where specialneeds campers can enjoy themselves and broaden their horizons. Improvements have been made to the dormitories and the dining hall to provide the best experience possible for the campers. Thanks to the renovations that were made to the dining hall, campers and staff members are now able to eat together rather than in shifts. Private donations are the camp’s sole source of funding; therefore, yearround fundraising efforts are critical to the camp’s operations. Camp Pa-QuaTuck has teamed up with

the local Rotary Clubs and other organizations to hold these charitable events including a Chinese Auction, 5K Run, Breakfast with Santa, Spring Fling Joy Prom, Bradstock, Oktoberfest, Spooky Walk, the Fuoco Memorial Golf Outing, and the Inlet Ride Bike-A-Thon. “We are excited to open up our 68th season to our new and returning campers,” said Bridget Costello, Director of Camp Pa-Qua-Tuck. “It is because of the efforts of the Moriches Rotary Club, private donors, and other groups that we have been able to open every summer and give these children and young adults the chance to have fun and be themselves.” For more information about Camp Pa-Qua-Tuck or to make a donation, please call 631.878.1070 or visit www.camppaquatuck. com.

RESEARCH PROJECT - Sixth grade students from Our Lady of Lourdes in West Islip completed research projects on a mathematician. The students researched the mathematician’s vital statistics, education, family life, occupations, contributions to mathematics and world events that occurred during his/her lifetime. Some of the students chose to present their project orally and dress up with props and pictures. Other students created Power Point or Prezi presentations or collages of the mathematician’s life. The students loved the freedom of creativity and their personalities really shined through in their presentations.

Beginning on June 21st, Camp Pa-Qua-Tuck will open up the 2015 summer season for young campers with special needs and disabilities. Fourth grade student from Oquenock attended the Eagle Award Ceremony for Austin Bodurian, from Boy Scout Troop 95 of Elementary School in West Islip designed a poster to promote the importance of pool West Islip. Councilman Flotteron thanked Mr. Bodurian for his service to the greater safety. The poster designed by Grace Iehle was picked as the winner at Oquenock Elementary for the 11th District. Islip community and wished him the best of luck on his future projects.

SHAKESPEARE FESTIVAL - “All the world’s a stage” and once again, Saints Cyril and Methodius students were invited to participate in the annual Long Island Student Shakespeare Festival and as per usual, the students did a wonderful job of representing SSCM! Heartfelt congratulations and kudos to each of the students who worked tirelessly to put together an incredible display of drama and tragedy that would have made the Bard of Avalon himself proud.

SPORTSMANSHIP AWARD - Comprised of sixth, seventh and eighth graders from Saints Cyril and Methodius, this all-girls Volleyball Team hit a nice little winning streak to round out the end of the season and perhaps even more exciting, the team learned this week that the Catholic Middle Schools Athletic Association named SSCM’s Girls Volleyball Team, the team with the best Sportsmanship in the league. The girls were all smiles as they were awarded their Sportsmanship Award for the season.
