As vaccinated New Yorkers begin to gather for nicer weather, many will be dusting off and firing up their outdoor grills. With COVID precautions motivating more people to cook and grill at home, The FASNY urges all New Yorkers to follow some basic rules to avoid accidents and injuries, and to remember not to hesitate to call for help needed. “The warmer weather will certainly encourage New Yorkers to break out their BBQ’s for outdoor cooking,” said FASNY President John Farrell. “We want all residents to stay safe as we celebrate the coming summer days and consider basic grill safety tips. A three-day workshop, from July 6 through July 8 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m, middle school-aged kids, grades five through eight, will explore their creativity and build social interaction skills. It will be held at St. Mark’s Episcopal Church, 754 Montauk Highway, Islip, NY 11751. The program will feature scavenger hunts, art projects, nature studies and will also have guest speakers, such as Ollie Bouler, author and illustrator of Olivia’s Birds. Bouler who, at the age of 11, created an illustrated field guide of birds and raised over $200,000 for the wildlife affected by the Exxon

oil spill in 2010, will conduct a drawing demonstration to gift every camper with a copy of the book. Hosted by St. Mark’s Episcopal Church in Islip, NY and funded by a grant from Episcopal Ministries, it is expected to continue by traveling to Episcopal churches throughout Long Island and Queens so that “we can reach as many children as possible,” said St. Mark’s Rector, Richard E. Serve Steak Alongside A Backyard Barbecue Staple A night of al fresco dining next to a grill in the backyard can be a great way to spend Father’s Day! Nearly any type of food can be grilled, and steaks tend to be especially good when cooked over an open ﬂame. The following recipe for “Grilled Rib-Eye Steaks with Mushroom-Shallot Butter” from Laurie McNamara’s “Simple Scratch” (Avery) is sure to please, especially when coupled with McNamara’s recipe for “Baked Beans,” a musthave staple for any backyard barbecue. Grilled Rib-Eye Steaks with Mushroom-Shallot Butter Serves 4 to 6 8 tablespoons (1 stick) plus 3 tablespoons unsalted butter, at room temperature 1⁄2 cup sliced shallot 1 heaping cup sliced cremini mushrooms 2 large cloves garlic, minced 1 teaspoon coarsely chopped fresh thyme leaves 1⁄4 teaspoon kosher salt, plus more as needed 1⁄4 teaspoon coarsely ground black pepper, plus more as needed 4 to 6 steaks (such as ribeye, New York strip or porterhouse) Melt 1 tablespoon of the butter in a medium skillet over medium-low heat. Add the shallot and cook until golden and slightly crispy, 7 to 8 minutes. Use a slotted spoon to transfer the shallot to a clean plate. In the same skillet, melt 2 tablespoons of butter, then add the mushrooms, garlic, thyme, salt, and pepper. Stir and cook until the mushrooms are softened, about 5 minutes. Slice the mushroom butter into coins and top each of the steaks with two coins before serving.

It’s often said that some of the best ideas are born of necessity and that’s certainly the case with “Camp Color: Summer Humanities-Enrichment for Middle School Students.” The plan began to gel when teachers Nadine Palumbo and Anthony Vittorino were discussing the detrimental effects of social distancing guidelines, hybrid learning, and a loss of extracurricular activities. “We each witnessed formerly engaged students shutting down and checking out emotionally by turning off their cameras screens and becoming passive,” said Palumbo, adding that “Countless family friends have also addressed concerns about their children’s ‘pandemic slide’ and feelings of depression.” They started testing out different formats, such as a distance-learning talk show to interview artists and authors about their creative process during the pandemic, but that seemed better suited only for high school level remote learning. Palumbo and Vittorino felt the challenges of the past year were particularly harmful to middle school students since, “They will be making a key transition from elementary to secondary school,” said Palumbo, who also serves on the vestry at St. Mark’s as well as on the Bishop’s Council for the Diocese of Long Island.

Operation Deep Dive | Military Veteran Suicide Prevention Study Seeks Interviewees An average of 17 military veterans die by suicide every day, and Long Island residents have the opportunity to help end this crisis by supporting Operation Deep Dive (OpDD), a community-based veteran suicide prevention study taking place in New York and 12 other states across the country. The four-year study is led by national nonprofit America’s Warrior Partnership and researchers from the University of Alabama with support from the Bristol-Myers Squibb Foundation. The study directors will host a Facebook Live broadcast on Wednesday, June 16, at 2 p.m. EST to discuss local suicide prevention initiatives with guest speakers Beth Murphy, Senior Deputy Commissioner at Suffolk County Department of Labor, Licensing and Consumer Affairs, and Marcelle Leis, Director of Veteran Services at

Bethel Hobbs Community Farm is a non-profit organization with a rich history. It is an 11 acre farm, located at 178 Oxhead Road in Centereach, and is ran entirely by volunteers. This community farm grows and harvests an average of over 50,000 pounds of fresh, organic produce, which then gets donated to over 11 food pantries / soup kitchens. They also offer CSA Memberships, educational programs, they host community events and they have a seasonal farm stand! Their crop shares are an easy way to guarantee farm fresh veggies for you and your family all season long. By joining their CSA program you will gain a connection to their farm and know exactly where your vegetables are coming from. Their organically grown vegetables are harvested and packed the same day you receive them, cutting time and travel dramatically from field to fork. New York Blood Center (NYBC) announces a blood shortage in the region, one year after New York was the epicenter of the pandemic. Before COVID-19, donors could stop by community blood drives at convenient locations like high schools, colleges, and offices. It has been one year since these groups had to cancel their blood drives due to COVID-19 and few have been able to resume these life-saving events. NYBC currently has a 4 day supply of blood, which is well below what is needed by area hospitals. New York’s healthcare system requires 1,500 donations each day to treat patients ranging from trauma victims to newborn babies and their mothers to cancer patients. According to the National Fire Protection Association, roughly half of the injuries involving grills are thermal burns. Of the approximately 16,600 patients who visit emergency rooms for injuries involving grills each year, 8,200 are treated for thermal

burns. UPMC HealthBeat notes that thermal burns typically occur when a person touches ﬂames or fire or hot molten liquid or steam. Thermal burns also can result when touching a hot object, such as cooking pans, irons or heated appliances. WebMD

advises burn sufferers to call 911 immediately if the burn penetrates all layers of the skin; if the skin appears leathery or charred, with white, brown or black patches; or if the hands, feet, face, or genitals are burned. In addition, call 911 immediately if infants or

seniors suffer any burns, even if the burn does not appear severe. Treatment will depend on the severity and location of the burn. In the immediate aftermath of a thermal burn, Stanford Children’s Health advises cooling the affected area with cold water or a cold

compress until the pain is reduced or alleviated. Avoid breaking any blisters that form, and protect the burn with a dry, sterile gauze bandage or with a clean bed sheet or cloth. Do not attempt to remove clothing that is stuck to the burned area. In such

instances, cut around the clothing and leave the burn intact. Resist any temptation to apply ointments, oils or sprays to the burned area, as these should only be applied when prescribed by a doctor.

New Study Shows Transcendental Meditation Effective For Reducing Veterans’ Stress Veterans with posttraumatic stress syndrome (PTSD) who practiced the Transcendental Meditation (TM) technique showed significant reductions in symptom severity, according to a new study published in the Journal of Traumatic Stress http:// doi.org/10.1002/jts.22665. The study’s principal investigator was Mayer Bellehsen, PhD, director of the Unified Behavioral Health Center for Military Veterans and their Families in Bay Shore, Long Island and member. “ Tr a n s c e n d e n t a l Meditation is a non-traumafocused, easy-to-learn technique that was found

in this study to improve PTSD symptoms, likely through the experience of physical rest,” said Dr. Bellehsen. “In contrast to commonly administered therapies for PTSD that are trauma-focused and based on a patient’s recall of past traumatic experiences, this intervention does not require extensive review of traumatic history, which some individuals find difficult to engage in. This intervention may therefore be more tolerable for some individuals struggling with PTSD.” The randomized controlled trial assigned 40 veterans with documented PTSD to either the TM

group or a “treatment as usual” control group. The TM treatment provided 16 sessions over 12 weeks, with twice-a-day daily home practice. PTSD symptom severity was assessed with the Clinician-Administered PTSD Scale for DSM-5, and patient self-report with the PTSD Checklist for DSM-5. The results showed large effect sizes, indicating a strong TM treatment impact in reducing trauma symptoms for both PTSD measures. Other facts associated with trauma, such as depression and anxiety symptoms and sleep problems, also showed a strong impact as a result of TM treatment.

“This trial corroborates the findings of a large clinical trial published in The Lancet Psychiatry,” said Sanford Nidich, Ed.D., Director of the Center for Social-Emotional Health at Maharishi International University Research Institute, and study coinvestigator. “The current study further supports the effectiveness of Transcendental Meditation as a first-line treatment for PTSD in veterans. The availability of an additional evidence-based therapy will benefit veterans, both by offering them a greater range of options and by serving as an alternative treatment strategy for

those who don’t want to engage in trauma-focused treatment or who aren’t responding to a previous PTSD intervention.” The authors pointed out in their research paper that TM may positively affect trauma symptom severity through the reduction of hyperarousal symptoms. Previous research has shown that the practice of TM decreases physiological responses to stressful stimuli. In addition, recent research indicates that TM may improve resilience and positive coping strategies, providing further benefit to both veterans and active military personnel.
