New Ground is a non-profit organization that helps to break the cycle of homelessness right here in Nassau and Suffolk counties. This organization began all from the vision of an educator that was committed to providing a safe haven for those living in poverty. This educator saw that shelters were only providing a short-term fix to a problem that needed a real, lasting solution. After envisioning an organization that provided a holistic suite of support services while empowering participants to help themselves, she founded New Ground in 1991 to do just that.

This organization is also in need of additional volunteers to help out in various areas. You can also get involved with one of their Event Committees to help coordinate one of their upcoming special events, or with their Program Committee, which meets quarterly to review overall programs and services.

Since opening their doors, New Ground has seen over 80% of the families they have served “graduate” from their programs self sufficient and into permanent stable housing. New Ground empowers children, parents and Veterans to achieve their goals so that they can secure a brighter future for generations to come! When adding square footage to a home, homeowners may need to knock down an interior wall or walls, the cost of which can vary widely depending on the walls being knocked down. Loadbearing walls are needed to support the home, and while such walls can be removed, homeowners may need to hire structural engineers at additional cost to orchestrate such removals. In addition, homeowners can expect to pay more when knocking down walls that contain ducts or electrical wiring. It also can be costly for homeowners whose homes are old to knock down walls. Author Heinz Brings The ‘Wild’ Children’s book author Brian Heinz recently visited West Islip’s Paul J. Bellew Elementary School to wrap up the school’s Parents As Reading Partners program,

coordinated by Bellew’s PTA. Heinz is known for his stories of the natural world, such as “Butternut Hollow Pond,” “The Great North Woods,” “Red Fox

at McCloskey’s Farm,” “Nanuk: Lord of the Ice” and “A Coming of Winter in the Adirondacks.” The rapt audience listened as Heinz shared stories of his adventures in the wilderness and his experiences with animals. He detailed the journey of a writer from observations and note taking to drafting and revision. Heinz also autographed copies of his books for the Bellew students. “His tales had us all laughing aloud throughout his presentation,” said Principal Rhonda Pratt. “Without a doubt, Mr. Heinz was an inspiration to all of us.”

Sixth Graders Interview Julian Lennon

Sixth graders in Jeanette Merola’s and Janet Renganeschi’s classes at West Islip’s Udall Road Middle School traveled to New York City on Earth Day to interview Grammy-nominated musician, philanthropist

and author Julian Lennon. The students met with Lennon to discuss his new book, “Love the Earth,” the conclusion of a bestselling trilogy, and spoke to him about Lennon’s humanitarian efforts, which inspired the

writing of his books. His White Feather Foundation was created in 2007 with the key initiatives being the education, health, conservation and the protection of indigenous cultures.

A Wormy West Islip Mystery Students in Justin DeMaio’s class at West Islip’s Bayview Elementary School have been learning about food chains and food webs, utilizing a mystery from Mystery Science. One of the labs focused on decomposers, such as worms. After observing the

behavior and preferences of worms, the students came up with their own experiments to conduct on worms in order to learn more about them. Some tested to see if worms ate soil, while others investigated the worms’ reactions to noise. The students had to come up

with a testable question, create a list of materials, describe a plan, write a hypothesis and then decide how they could make their experiment better after completing it. “My students not only had fun, but learned a lot and are now even more curious,” said DeMaio.
