Alleykattz is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization that operates on volunteers alone. The organization was formed in 2016 by Sonnia Cepeda. They service all of Long Island, New York City Metro and the surrounding areas. Their mission of rescuing abandoned and homeless cats, as well as cats in danger of abuse and neglect. Alleykatz has a strict
adoption policy to ensure cats and kittens get the best homes. Adoption application and a home visit are required before placement of a cat into a home. They believe that there is a good home for every cat they rescue and even though it might take a little longer for some to find their “furever” home, it is worth the wait if they end up in a happy home that suits them. Every cat is in foster care until the
right home is found and Alleykattz is currently in need of foster homes (preferably close to Long Island). As vaccinated New Yorkers begin to gather for nicer weather, many will be dusting off and firing up their outdoor grills. With COVID precautions motivating more people to cook and grill at home, The FASNY urges all New Yorkers to follow some basic rules to avoid accidents and injuries, and to remember not to hesitate to call for help needed. “The warmer weather will certainly encourage New Yorkers to break out their BBQ’s for outdoor cooking,” said FASNY President John Farrell. “We want all residents to stay safe as we celebrate the coming summer days and consider basic grill safety tips. We also remind everyone to continue to follow applicable social
distancing rules to keep their families, and guests, safe.” According to the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), from 2014-2018, an average of 19,700 patients per year went to emergency rooms because of injuries involving grills. Gas grills were involved in an average of 10,600 home fires per year, including 3,900 structure fires and 4,900 outdoor fires annually. Keep everyone safe by following the important tips below: Tips from the NFPA and FASNY: Propane and charcoal BBQ grills should only be used outdoors; The grill should be placed well away from the home, deck railings and out from under eaves and overhanging branches;
Keep children and pets at least three feet away from the grill area; Keep your grill clean by removing grease or fat buildup from the grills and in trays below the grill; Never leave your grill unattended while in use; Always make sure your gas grill lid is open before lighting it; Always use foodapproved fire starters for wood grills and smokers. Bethel Hobbs Community Farm www.hobbsfarm.info
Bethel Hobbs Community Farm is a non-profit organization with a rich history. You may know and love their farm, or you may never believe there is an 11-acre farm in Centereach that has been feeding Long Islanders for decades! The James Hobbs family came to Long Island from Georgia in 1906 and grew farm produce in New Village (North Centereach) for local Long Islanders for 3 generations, first as farm workers and later purchasing the land, which became known as Hobbs Farm. James’ son, Alfred Hobbs took ownership in 1955 and farmed his own property, as well as rental farmland in the surrounding area for many years. He passed up many opportunities to sell the property, hoping that it would always remain a farm. Thankfully, it does remain a farm to this day. Hobbs Farm is the last farm in Centereach, as well as the last AfricanAmerican family farm on Long Island. When Mr. Hobbs passed away in 1996, he left the farm property to the Bethel AME Church in Setauket, where he was a member. The farm was renamed Bethel Hobbs Community Farm. However, the church struggled with local community organizations that were threatening to buyout the land for other means. In 2007, “Friends of Hobbs Farm” was formed, which led to the restoration process of the farm. Today, the church still owns the farm, a non-profit organization that is entirely operated by volunteers. The farm is 11 acres and it grows and harvests an average of over 50,000 pounds of fresh, organic produce, which then gets donated to several local food pantries and soup kitchens on the island. They also offer CSA Memberships, which allows locals to receive a weekly share of nutritionally dense produce grown on their farm right in Centereach. The produced is packed the same day as they go out for delivery, and recipients can rest knowing exactly where they were grown. Additionally, the farm offers educational programs, community events and they have a seasonal farm stand. Currently, this farm has various upcoming community events planned! On June 13th and September 12th, they will
be holding a Line Dance event on the farm itself. For only $25/person, you can join Skip and the Country Rhythms Team for a fun afternoon of dancing, food and a raffle. All dances will be taught; you can arrive as early as 1:30 PM and dancing starts at 2 PM. Additionally, anyone is welcome to stop by and shop at their farm stand every Saturday from 10 AM - 3 PM starting June 12th running through October 10th! You will find organically-grown produce and every purchase made will support the farm and it’s mission. Looking to show your support in another way? Volunteers are needed! Depending on the season, Bethel Hobbs Community Farm has a variety of farm work that volunteers can assist with, such as planting, weeding, harvesting, working in the greenhouse and property maintenance. Individuals and groups are able to volunteer at the farm and community service hours can be given. If you are interested in volunteering, please visit their website and fill out their Volunteer Waiver Form and the contact the farm directly at 631.774.1556 to find out when you can start! Due to the pandemic, volunteers must bring a pair of gloves. Additionally, they suggest volunteers bring sunscreen and any food or drink they may need. It will be held at St. Mark’s Episcopal Church, 754 Montauk Highway, Islip, NY 11751. The program will feature scavenger hunts, art projects, nature studies and
will also have guest speakers, such as Ollie Bouler, author and illustrator of Olivia’s Birds. Bouler who, at the age of 11, created an illustrated field guide of birds and raised over $200,000 for the wildlife affected by the Exxon oil spill in 2010, will conduct a drawing demonstration to gift every camper with a copy of the book.
Hosted by St. Mark’s Episcopal Church in Islip, NY and funded by a grant from Episcopal Ministries, it is expected to continue by traveling to Episcopal churches throughout Long Island and Queens so that “we can reach as many children as possible,” said St. Mark’s Rector, Richard E. • The flag should be displayed at every public institution and at schools during school days. • When displayed vertically and not on a staff, the union should be on the left when observed. It should be suspended so its folds fall freely as though the flag were staffed. • The flag should be hoisted briskly and lowered ceremoniously. • The flag is often displayed at half-staff on days of mourning, including Memorial Day. The flag should first be hoisted to the peak for an instant, then lowered to half-staff position, which is half the distance between the top and bottom of the staff. • On a vehicle, the U.S. flag should be displayed from a staff firmly fixed to the chassis. It should not be draped over the hood, top, sides, or back of a vehicle. • The flag should
never touch anything beneath it, such as the ground, the floor, water, or merchandise. It also should never have anything placed on it.
• A flag in poor condition should be destroyed with dignity, preferably by burning. Most American Legion posts and local Boy Scouts troops will
have the resources to retire flags accordingly. Many will host annual flag retirement ceremonies on Flag Day.

advises burn sufferers to call 911 immediately if the burn penetrates all layers of the skin; if the skin appears leathery or charred, with white, brown or black patches; or if the hands, feet, face, or genitals are burned. In addition, call 911 immediately if infants or
seniors suffer any burns, even if the burn does not appear severe. Treatment will depend on the severity and location of the burn. In the immediate aftermath of a thermal burn, Stanford Children’s Health advises cooling the affected area with cold water or a cold

The United States flag was first imagined after the signing of the Declaration of Independence in 1776. The Continental Congress authorized creation of the first national flag on June 14, 1777. It was decided that the flag should have 13 stripes, alternating red and white, to represent the original 13 colonies, and that the new union be represented by 13 white stars in a blue field to signify a “new constellation.” Francis Hopkinson, one of the signers of the Declaration of Independence, is most often credited with the original design. Today, there are 50 stars on the flag to represent the 50 states, while the 13 stripes still represent the 13 British colonies that became the first states.
