St. Patrick School Honors Veterans For Memorial Day

PSEG Foundation Awards United Way Of Long Island $45,000 Grant

The PSEG Foundation has awarded United Way of Long Island a $45,000 grant toward VetsBuild, a program which provides career training and employment opportunities for Long Island veterans and their families. The grant will make possible a hands-on education in green construction for 25 veterans as they work to transform the United Way of Long Island headquarters in Deer Park, New York, into a Net Zero building that produces as much energy as it uses. Veterans will shadow licensed construction professionals to help install more than 550 PV Panels at the United Way of Long Island facility, gaining experience that will help them find employment in the growing field of renewable energy, which is expected to support thousands of new jobs over the next five years. “PSEG is proud to be a long-time supporter of United Way of Long Island,” said Calvin Ledford Jr. President PSEG Foundation. “We are always looking for ways to foster sustainability and economic empowerment in the communities we serve and the VetsBuild program is especially important to us to expand the workforce of professionals who design, build, and implement renewable energy in our region. By harnessing the talent of veterans and reducing barriers to skilled employment by culturally diverse, underserved people, we
all reap the rewards.” “Our thanks to PSEG for providing this important grant,” said Theresa A. Regnante, President and CEO of United Way of Long Island. “The VetsBuild program will not only provide workforce development training to connect veterans with the confidence and skills needed to obtain employment, but will also help lower utility costs for United Way, allowing us to reinvest the savings into programs and services which will directly impact the needs of our Long Island neighbors.” Upon completion of the project, United Way’s headquarters will serve as a community education hub for interactive learning on Net Zero Energy systems and technologies. Tours will be available for local companies and nonprofits organizations who are considering converting to Net Zero. Expanding on its relevance to the community, in times of natural disasters, the building will be transformed into a Command Center in collaboration with the Volunteer Organization Active in Disaster (VOAD). VetsBuild participants will also receive training at United Way’s E3 SmartBuild Training Center, a state-of-the art facility equipped with the latest technology and equipment. Graduates will work toward earning industry recognized certifications in green building such as

Saf-T-Swim Helps Families Splash Into Long Island Summer Safely With Water Safety Acronym
Saf-T-Swim announced a series of water safety tips to help families prepare for a safe, fun summer in and out of the water. The guidelines embody the proud member of the Long Island community’s mission to empower children with life-saving swim skills and dedication to teaching water safety. Bobby Hazen, District Manager of Saf-T-Swim and founder of End Drowning Now, says: “More than 90% of pool drownings happen at home involving young children while a caregiver was present. Swimming lessons, fencing, locking ladders, proper pool covers, and alarms can help this. Sadly, drowning statistics across the country have dramatically increased because of the pandemic, as there have been more pools installed and more
distractions.” As summer approaches, the local swim school urges parents and families to practice the following water safety tips from the Saf-T-Swim, Think Water Safety, Think S.P.L.A.S.H. guideline: S = Swim Lessons. It is imperative to teach children and caregivers how to swim and learn basic safety instructions. Swim lessons are an essential tool for helping children learn lifesaving skills year-round. Little Flower was founded in 1929 by Catholic priest Monsignor Bernard Quinn who came to Wading River, Long Island, looking for a haven for the youth of his parish in Bedford Stuyvesant, Brooklyn, that were excluded from programs and services at the time. Since then, Little Flower has grown and adapted to address the unmet needs of thousands of children, families and individuals with developmental and intellectual disabilities. One of this organization’s oldest and largest programs is its family foster care program, which has served children and families throughout New York City and Long Island since 1952. Little Flower is committed to finding safe and nurturing homes for children and young adults that are unable to remain home with their families because they believe every child should have guidance, stability and love. Little Flower strives to meet the immediate needs of children entering foster care by partnering with dedicated foster parents who bring experience and skills in supporting children experiencing trauma. Potential foster parents undergo a thorough application and screening process, complete training, and participate in a home study before becoming a foster parent. The Little Flower team provides ongoing support and services to foster parents to ensure they can create the most nurturing environment for the foster children in their care. Additionally, Little Flower partners with foster parents and children’s families to support the children while their family receives the support and services they need to safely parent upon the child’s return from foster care. They also work with extended family to find relatives or other permanent homes for children who cannot safely return to their parents. This
Foster Care program is committed to supporting children experiencing trauma and strengthening families. For children requiring specialized care, Little Flower offers a Therapeutic Foster Boarding Home (TFBH) program based on their Wading River campus that works with children placed in foster care through Nassau or Suffolk County. Therapeutic foster parents are provided with additional training and certification to best care for the specialized needs of the foster children in their home. In addition to providing temporary care for children in a safe and nurturing environment, foster parents work closely with the organization’s social work team and the child’s parents in support of family reunification or permanency planning and ensure children are available to attend family visits. Foster parents model positive behavior, provide guidance and positive experiences, as well as support educational, dental, medical, and mental health needs of the child. Little Flower is proud to partner with such compassionate individuals willing to help children in need thrive and reach their full potential. Vivian M., a foster parent with Little Flower for more than 13 years, shared that she became a foster parent because she “loves children and wanted to make a difference.”

New York State Park Lifeguard Opportunity On Long Island lifeguards must meet certain eligibility criteria, which includes successfully completing the qualifying procedure, before being hired. Candidates must be 17 years of age to take the exam and valid photo ID is required at check in. Applicants must have 20/70 uncorrected vision in both eyes. Contact lenses or glasses are not permitted. VALID CPR/AED for the
Professional Rescuer and first aid certification is preferred but not necessary at time of hiring. *All certifications must be completed by the end of rookie training in order to graduate. Lifeguards will be hired at $18.15 an hour. The qualifying procedure will be held on Sunday June 12th promptly at 7:30AM at Suffolk Community College, Grant Campus,
Brentwood, NY. The final event of the new hire procedure will take place at the West Bathhouse Ocean front at Jones Beach. Lifeguard candidates must provide their own transportation from Suffolk Community College to Jones Beach. On-site registration opens at 7am & the test will start at 7:30am. The exam consists of 100-yard
timed swim, 50 yard cross chest carry, ¾ mile run and 350-400-yard timed ocean swim. You must bring sneakers! All components are timed and scored based on your finished time. Results of Sunday mornings exams will be announced, and a rookie draft will take place over zoom on Monday, June 13th, 2022 9am. A link will be emailed to all candidates
who successfully completed both portions of Sunday morning’s exam. Those candidates who successful accept positions on Sunday, will be required to attend 5 paid days/40 hours of Jones Beach Lifeguard Rookie Training beginning on Saturday, June 18 through Wednesday, June 22nd.

World War II Weekend At The Museum Of American Armor Will Observe The 80th Anniversary Of The Sherman Tank “Calling All Sherman Veterans For A Tank Side Dedication Ceremony” The 80th anniversary of the iconic Sherman tank that spearheaded America’s liberation of Europe will be the featured armor vehicle during this year’s World War II Encampment Weekend at the Museum of American Armor inside Old Bethpage Village Restoration, 1303 Round Swamp Road, Old Bethpage, Long Island, on Saturday June 11 and Sunday June 12, between 10:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. The Armor Museum has put out an “All Points Bulletin” for Sherman tank veterans to join the Armor Museum in observing the milestone anniversary and participating in an oral histories project that memorializes their experiences. In addition to the Sherman, the weekend will feature military reenactments presented by the Long Island Living History Association (LILHA) and a parade of operational armor vehicles that comprise the museum’s extensive collection. The Armor Museum’s founder and president Lawrence Kadish
stated, “The Armor Museum continues to offer a powerful presentation that keeps alive the legacy of our nation’s military and the gift of freedom they have given all of us.” Michael Sapraicone, Senior Armor Museum Trustee said, “This museum is a unique commitment by public and private sectors to preserve and present a seminal chapter in the history of our world that is still defining current events around the world.” Admission is $15 adults; $12 children 5 - 12 (under 5 are free); and $12 seniors, (60+) volunteer firefighters and veterans (Please provide ID).
