St. John the Baptist Junior, Cindy McCabe, claimed the Grand Prize in the Gilda’s Club It’s Always Something Teen Essay Contest with her piece entitled “Pancreatic Cancer.” The contest is open to any high school student in New York City or on Long Island and is held in memoriam of the late Gilda Radner. Ms. Radner was one of the great comedic minds of the 20th century who died at the young age of 42 after a lengthy bout with ovarian cancer. The essay itself must explain how cancer has touched the student’s life. Cindy’s work was selected as the Grand Prize winner out of the hundreds of students who submitted essays. Principal Nan Doherty stated, “Gilda Radner lives on in so many unique ways and funny memories. So it is wonderful for Cindy’s essay to be selected and celebrated by Gilda’s Club who recognizes teenage writers in this way.”

Bellew Elementary School welcomed a May 12th visit from the 19th annual Ride for Life and founder Chris Pendergast, whose group works to create awareness about ALS, also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease; to raise funds to support research for a cure; and to support ALS patients and their families. With the entire school lining the sidewalk around the bus circle to show their support, Bellew’s students embraced Pendergast’s message of hope, displaying the banners and sign they had created. “It was a heartfelt experience for all, and one that our students and staff will always remember,” said Principal Rhonda Pratt. Additionally, West Islip High School students walked along with the Ride for Life and the district’s Udall Road Middle School cheered on the charity effort.

Even though it’s just a short drive down Ocean Parkway, my family and I have never managed to get out there to witness the spectacle up close and in person. Too much traffic, too many people, too much of a hassle… This year, though, I realized that the planes would be practicing right around the corner at Republic Airport during the week leading up to the show. And so, on Friday afternoon, a friend and I made a point of taking a ride down to the Airport Plaza shopping center to see if we could catch a glimpse. A glimpse? Try witnessing all six of the planes whizzing overhead and whoknows-what speed, close enough so that we could read the numbers on them! What a sight!

If only I had my camera, I thought. Well, after that close call, I decided to make it my mission to get a shot of them ﬂying to or from the air show over the weekend, since I knew they would cross over my house on their ﬂight down to the beach. Saturday afternoon, as I heard them approach, I ran out with my camera – only to catch the cloud of dust they had left in their wake. Okay, I thought, I’ll just wait here on the deck – listening to the simulcast on the radio – until I hear them wrapping up their routine. Then, all I have to do is aim my camera for the sky and I can’t miss them! Easier said than done. I saw them coming, all right. The problem was it’s a little hard to frame something moving at hundreds of miles an hour in your camera lens before it’s passed you by. I managed to snap one shot as they approached, which, after the camera’s natural delay, resulted in a rather fuzzy shot of the planes whizzing right out of the frame. There’s always tomorrow, I thought. The next morning, I drove

down to the local town beach and waited, poised for the approach. Sure enough, I saw the HC-130 slowly making its way south, a sure sign that the six Blue Angels were not far behind. And then… out of the clouds they came – all six, flying in perfect formation. And again, I was only able to get just one shot before I lost track of the formation. I followed their flight into the distance, where I was actually able to view most of the theatrics which followed, albeit from a great distance. I imagine it was much better up close, but hey – not a bad seat on my beach either! I must have stood there for a solid 30 minutes, watching the back and forth, up and down, looping motion of the jets, until at last, they began their return trip to Republic. This time, I got it. One...two… three shots as they came closer and closer – still a little blurred, but sharp against the clear blue sky. Finally! As they flew off into the distance, I heard one bystander mumble, “There they go – our tax dollars at work.” But she was smiling.

Fifth-graders at West Islip’s Bayview Elementary School participated in the school’s first Sports Night on May 19th, organized by Bayview’s physical education staff and hosted by Beach Street Middle School. “Tonight is about doing your best and sportsmanship, but the most important part is having fun,” Bayview Principal John Mullins told his excited students before they began. Events included a

scooter race, balloon popsquats, a basketball shootout, tug of war and a teambuilding event, which required the students to work cooperatively with a peer to balance a ball between them while racing. Three teams – the DeMaio Dominators, Kennedy Krushers and Florea-Gagliardi Gladiators – competed to win the Sports Night trophy, with the Krushers coming out on top.

- On May 16th and 17th, Samantha Arnold competed in the Suffolk County Individual Girls Golf Championship at the Middle Island Country Club. Samantha is a senior at West Islip High School. She placed 9th after two days of competing and qualified for the State Tournament, which began June 4th at Bethpage State Park. Samantha is the daughter of Joseph and Denise Arnold of West Islip and the sister of Joseph and Nicholas. The family is so proud of her and will continue to be there to cheer her on.
