Ceremonial Gathering
O
ver 40 people gathered early Memorial Day morning at a small, little-known cemetery on Boulevard Avenue in West Islip. This was the seventh annual ceremony at which the memory of David C. Ruland, a Revolutionary War veteran who fought in the Battle of Long Island, August 27th, 1776, was honored. Thanks to all those who turned out in support of this annual commemoration.

Won’t you help us dispel some of the myths and misconceptions that still surround epilepsy? Help us make the world a better place for people with epilepsy who are often discriminated against for no reason. Volunteers are needed to perform a puppet show in area elementary schools. We use the” Kids on the Block” puppets, a troupe of life-size able and disabled puppets. If you have one hour a week for four to six weeks for training and can commit to one performance a month, we will train you in the art of Bunraku, or Japanese Puppetry. This is an opportunity to have fun working with children while promoting an atmosphere of kindness and tolerance in our community. The Long Island Museum in Stony Brook will hold its annual juried art competition this summer in conjunction with the upcoming exhibition, Coney Island and Jones Beach: Empires by the Sea. This year’s competition is titled Let’s Go To The Beach, and all amateur and professional artists are invited to submit up to three works representing Long Island’s beaches. Deadline for entries is June 28th. A panel of museum staff will select final entries, which will be displayed in the Visitors Center from August 10th through September 8th. Judging for the contest takes place on Friday, August 9th and the winners will be awarded in at an artist’s reception on Sunday, August 11th from 2 to 4 p.m. Winning entries will be displayed in the Art Museum, along with the Coney Island and Jones
Beach exhibition from September 12th through 29th. The reception is free and open to the public. Located at 1200 Route 25A in Stony Brook, the Long Island Museum is a Smithsonian Affiliate dedicated to art and history as it relates to Long Island. The museum is open Thursday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sunday from noon to 5 p.m. Regular admission is $9 for adults, $7 for seniors, $4 for students 6-17 and $1 on Thursdays. For many teens, the end of the school year is bittersweet. As soon as the final bell rings, students’ attentions shift from school, directly to unemployment. What should be a time of merriment soon proves to be anxiety provoking. Scrambling for a position, many students will fall victim to the minimum wage, monotonous positions that deprive them of summertime enjoyment. From the moment one embarks upon his first job, he or she becomes an adult. This hopeful teen now has the luxury of paying taxes, lengthy obligations and an overwhelming commitment. But it isn’t all bad.
These children quickly learn the value of money. It takes quite a bit of effort to make a dollar nowadays. The students that are employed can finally pay for their own movie tickets and even foot the bill after dinner. For me, a sixteen year-old who has held a steady summer job for the past four years, the excitement of purchasing my first vehicle was overwhelming. The pride I felt hanging that coconut air freshener from my rearview mirror was immense. I knew that it was finally time to show off what my hard work had earned me. While my friends were at the beach, I was bussing tables; but now, they are all asking me for

Recipe gives a tantalizing taste to Grilled Vegetable Napoleons (MS) -- Hot, lazy summer days are too precious to waste in the kitchen. Enhance your outdoor leisure time with a visit to a local farmer’s stand or market to choose fresh vegetables for this colorful recipe. Grilled Vegetable Napoleons Ingredients Substitute or add other vegetables as you wish. Some nice additions might be new potatoes or red peppers. Although the stacks are attractive and easy to serve, you may also arrange the grilled vegetables and cheese in a casserole.

cup olive oil large eggplant, cut in 12 slices (1/3-inch thick) medium zucchinis, cut in 24 slices (1/4-inch thick) large tomatoes, cut in 6 slices (1/3-inch thick) medium red onions, cut in 12 slices (1/3-inch thick) cup ricotta cheese Salt and pepper to taste teaspoons fresh thyme, chopped lb. mozzarella cheese, sliced 1/4-inch thick sprigs fresh rosemary
Directions Preheat barbecue and set on low. Brush vegetables with olive oil, season with salt and pepper, and grill slowly until tender, turning once. Transfer the vegetables to a tray, arranging them in a single layer, and cover tightly with plastic wrap. The vegetables may be grilled a day in advance, and refrigerated after cooling. Bring the vegetables back to room temperature before proceeding. Assembly Stir together the ricotta, thyme, salt, and pepper in a small bowl. Place one slice of eggplant on a lightly oiled grill sheet or foil pan. Spread 1 tablespoon of the ricotta mixture over the eggplant. Cover with 2 slices of zucchini, 1 slice of onion, 1 slice of mozzarella, 1 slice of tomato, and 2 slices of zucchini. Spread 1 tablespoon of the ricotta mixture over the onion, and top with another slice of eggplant. Repeat this procedure with the remaining vegetables to make 5 more stacks. Insert a wooden skewer through the centre of each stack to create a hole from top to bottom. Remove the bottom leaves from each rosemary sprig, leaving one inch of leaves on the top. Insert 1 sprig into the centre hole in each napoleon, and return to the barbecue. Heat for about 10 minutes on low, or until mozzarella is melted and vegetables are warmed through.

Officers Association and the Suffolk County Deputy Sheriffs P.B.A. It was attended by families of the deceased, law enforcement officers, county officials and civilian personnel.
