Prom is a teenage rite of passage. Prom night provides one more exciting adventure in a school experience that likely started with preschool jitters and will soon culminate with graduates receiving their high school diplomas.

Set An Example By Keeping Calm Prom planning can be stressful. Various details have to come together on the big day. Even though they may appear to be young adults, teens still may have meltdowns or impulse control issues when things don’t go their way. Set an example by reacting to obstacles calmly and finding workarounds.

Prom night planning reaches a fever pitch a few weeks before the big event. A significant amount of time and money are involved in making prom a night to remember. While teens may be focused on fashion and fun, parents may be wondering what they can do to steer their sons and daughters in the right direction. Here are some pointers to consider as families prepare for prom. Set A Budget The pandemic has affected supply chains and has contributed to increased prices on all types of consumer goods, so you may find that prom attire and accessories will cost more this year. Figure out what you can afford to contribute to the prom, and ask your teenager to pitch in. If your child is footing some of the bill, there may be a greater willingness to corral spending. One way to save money is to rent a gown/tuxedo rather than

As part of the West Islip School District’s celebrate education night on May 17, the district unveiled the renovations to its high school planetarium during an official ribboncutting ceremony. The district recognized those who supported the new renovations, teachers who continue to grow the program, and a student who created the new planetarium logo design. The district also honored those who were instrumental in the establishment of the school’s planetarium and educational programs

nearly 60 years ago. The theme of the ceremony was “Vision, Knowledge, Passion.” Anthony Pecorale was honored for his vison to establish a planetarium at the high school about 60 years ago. His grandson, Evan Pecorale, attends West Islip High School. He is also survived by his wife, Maria Pecorale. Arthur Maynard was the director of astronomy and space science education for NASA. Using his knowledge, West Islip hired him to write curriculum and develop its first astronomy program. For his passion, the

planetarium also honored Joseph Colombo, a beloved teacher of astronomy, physics and earth science for many years. The district also acknowledged Brian Taylor for his vision in initiating the grant for the renovation process. For their knowledge, teachers Tom Vitti and John Ruggiero were honored for continuing to grow the program. Lastly, the district acknowledged student Mary Attallah for her passion and the creation of the planetarium’s new logo.

Little Flower Children and Family Services of New York (Little Flower) is a human services non-proﬁt organization that transforms caring into action to deliver services, programs and direction to improve the lives of children and families in crisis and people with developmental disabilities across New York City and Long Island. They have been helping others for 93 years!

Little Flower has proudly adapted to address the unmet needs of those in their community by continuing to develop new programs and services. Their corporate headquarters and Suffolk County campus is still located in Wading River, however they also have a NYC campus, which is their ﬂagship ofﬁce in Brooklyn, along with ten residences across Queens and Long Island for individuals with developmental or intellectual disabilities.

“During the pandemic, Little Flower continued to operate without disruption to ensure the safety and well-being of hundreds of children in foster care, youth in residential treatment care, and adults with developmental disabilities. The Caring Acts Coalition will provide much needed support to those served by Little Flower, their families, our staff, and the local community,” shared Corinne Hammons, Little Flower’s President & CEO. Little Flower was founded in 1929 by Catholic Priest Monsignor Bernard Quinn, who was looking for a haven for the youth of his parish in Bedford Stuyvesant, Brooklyn, that were excluded from programs and services at the time. He opened a summer camp in Wading River that would eventually transition to a year-round residential treatment facility serving thousands of children, families and individuals with developmental disabilities.

Volunteer Opportunities For Recent Grads

During the months between graduating high school and beginning college, or between getting a university degree and entering the workforce, graduates may want to explore the personal growth that comes from volunteerism. Volunteering provides various benefits. Some of these rewards include networking with an entirely different group of people. Volunteering also can help a person realize greater happiness by doing selﬂess acts for others, while they also can help one to realize a new passion. In the future, volunteering with an organization also may help with a student’s job search. There are many arenas where young people can focus their volunteer efforts. Here are some ideas. • Animal shelter: Animal shelters rely on volunteers to help with their operations. They can be a good fit for anyone with a passion for animals and animal rights activism. • Public service sectors: AmeriCorp and Peace Corps have scores of opportunities for volunteers. AmeriCorp focuses on domestic issues, while the PeaceCorp is a branch of the U.S. government that engages volunteers in international service work. Community involvement, health

care, agriculture, homelessness, and combatting hunger are top priorities for these organizations. • English as a second language: Volunteers can spend time abroad teaching English to students. Others may want to volunteer domestically by helping non-English-speaking individuals improve their language skills. • Community government: A person may choose to sit on the board of a school, a neighborhood housing association, or even explore volunteerism with a township municipal office. On Saturday, June 11, from 8:30 to 1:30, at St. Mark’s Episcopal Church, 754 Montauk Highway (across from the Oconee Diner), will host a Food Donation Project/Health Fair. Donations can be dropped off and you will receive a ticket to enter the Health Fair. Participants can peruse the nutrition table created by South Shore University Hospital, whose motto is, “Connecting health and nutrition to improve your overall wellness.” They will address such things as healthy eating on a budget, healthy eating for seniors, healthy summertime recipes, and more. People will also be able to get their blood pressure checked by registered nurses; get their glucose monitored by members of Stony Brook University’s Physician Assistant Department; and get a free wellness gift from Little Angels Center.
