Days To Remember By: Jamie Lynn Ryan This is the time to remember Cause it will not last forever These are the days To hold on to Cause we won’t Although we’ll want to Tis the season for proms and pictures and graduations, for final summer vacations with friends and future college and career plans … and even though I am well past that point in my life, this time of year always makes me a bit nostalgic. As I watch students I taught in dancing for years and younger siblings of friends set off on these great adventures,

I can’t help but think back to when it was all fresh and new to me (and feel just a little old!). Upon reflection, I think the one regret most people share is that we – as a collective class – did not take the time to savor the moments quite as much as we would have liked to. Sure, there are pictures and newspaper clippings and all sorts of mementos … but the treasured memories – those are the priceless artifacts that mean the most. Unfortunately, they also tend to fade over time. Me, I still look at my yearbook from time to time, smiling at all the nice compliments and inside jokes which fill the pages from friends, family and faculty members. I still carry a walletsized picture from my prom at Windows On The World – yes, I

still carry photos in my wallet – which has obviously become even more priceless to me given the events which transpired on September 11th. Did I enjoy every minute while it was happening? Somewhat, but probably not to the degree I should have. Unfortunately, we were all consumed with college and scholarship applications, finals and AP exams, term papers and preparing for graduation. The actual experience – the only part which truly matters in the long run – tended to get lost in the shuffle. So to this year’s graduates … try, really try, to slow down, stop and savor … These are the days to remember. These are the moments to treasure.

Audible Crosswalk Installed Deputy Presiding Officer Wayne R. Horsley celebrated the installation of an audible crosswalk at the intersection of CR 82 Higbie Lane and Udall Road in West Islip. Representatives from Sons of AMVETS Post 48 and SILO, Suffolk Independent Living Organization, along with Legislator Thomas Barraga were on hand in support of this measure to assist individuals who are visually impaired or physically challenged to safely cross this intersection. The audible crosswalk was installed by Suffolk County Department of Public Works in cooperation with advocates for the disabled, including AMVETS, SILO and Helen Keller Services for the Blind. Legislator Barraga initiated the request on behalf of constituent, Mr. Devin Fernandez. “I commend my fellow

Legislator Tom Barraga, Pat Mitchell (AMVETS) and Marilyn Tucci (SILO) for taking action and advocating for this audible crosswalk and also the dedicated employees in DPW for working with the community to ensure the safety of our residents,” Horsley stated. Audible crosswalks have been installed throughout Suffolk County to provide an opportunity for visuallyimpaired persons to cross safely and independently. They emit an audible tone or verbal message to alert pedestrians when it is safe to proceed through the crosswalk. AMVETS, SILO and Helen Keller Services for the Blind have instituted a program to increase awareness concerning the need for audible crosswalks as a means to enable visually impaired persons to travel safely, with independence and dignity.

Senioritis For decades, high school seniors have been feeling the pressure to succeed from all angles. Toward the middle of their final year of high school, many of these same students develop what is commonly known to be Senioritis. Senioritis can be defined as a general apathy toward school work as the result of continued exposure to stress, anxiety and pressure. What does this actually mean? Seniors basically stop caring about their courses! For nearly 100% of those students affected by the issue, Senioritis results in falling asleep during class. This nap-time results in detentions, failing and absences. All of the stress that comes with waiting for

your SAT score, applying to colleges and hoping for an acceptance letter seems to just fade into the background as the final months tick down. These last few months misleadingly seem to be a little downtime and a resting period between actual high school and college. After slapping their future college’s bumper sticker on their cars, many students feel that their struggle is over. These students have done it, they have completed their journey. Not quite; getting accepted is just the first half of the battle. You can’t let your grades slip! Some colleges create the stipulation that even if one’s Grade Point Average drops a single letter

grade; the acceptance will prove to be null, void and ultimately invalid. This continued expectation is harder still for those students that aced the SAT’s, assumed a loaded schedule and basically busted their humps their entire academic career. The temptation to slack is so great that even the most promising students have been known to fall. This pseudo-sickness has been even known to travel between groups of close friends, as many times the influence is drastic. So what does this mean for your future high school senior? Do not catch Senioritis! The only known cure for Senioritis is a phenomenon known as Graduation.

He has chaired a committee composed of faculty, staff, parents and alumni whose charge is to develop a plan for improvements to the schools’ future technology. His son Jonathan is graduating from SJB this year. Peter Judge is one of four siblings who attended SJB and has remained a very active alumnus since he began his practice. In many tangible and spiritual ways, Dr. Judge has supported the school whenever he has been called upon by the administration. A regular at Career Day, Dr. Judge has often mentored students interested the medical field and is an avid fan of SJB sports teams. His two sons graduated from SJB as well; Peter ’05 and Stephen ’08. Kevin Tobin has been

a fixture at St. John the Baptist since the day the school opened. A member of the first graduating class, he was very active during his days as a student. When the Alumni Association was in its formative years, Kevin became its first president. He married his high school sweetheart, the former Eileen Walsh ’72, and they raised four daughters; Colleen ‘97, Bridget ‘02, Maureen 03, and Kerry ‘08. Helping Hands in West Islip, Inc., a tax-exempt charity founded in 1990 by local resident Jennifer Gallozzi, is seeking donations of new or gently-used backpacks and tote bags containing a few school supplies such as pencils, pens, sharpeners, notebooks, glue sticks, labels and scissors, to get underprivileged children ready for the upcoming school year. Donations can be dropped off any time before 9:30 a.m. on Wednesday, June 12th, at the American Legion Hall, 340 Union Boulevard (across from the firehouse), West Islip. Also needed are decorated bags or lunch boxes containing nonperishable breakfast/ lunch items such as granola bars, cereal boxes, fruit cups, fliptop tuna, crackers, soups, juice

boxes, and maybe a little toy, for distribution to summer programs and soup kitchens for children who are provided with free lunches during the school year. Helping Hands was begun in 1990 by Jennifer Gallozzi to serve the needy people of Suffolk County, especially the children. Today it serves over 22 local organizations and any families referred to them.

Last year, more than 100 backpacks were given to various groups, children’s centers and local families. While Jennifer and her volunteers may not be able to change a child’s life circumstances, they can give them happy moments through gestures of love and caring, one smile at a time. Helping Hands has always operated on a zero budget and survives solely through the generosity of

CROWNING CEREMONY - The Our Lady of Lourdes School Community gathered on the front lawn of the school for a beautiful May Crowning ceremony in honor of the Blessed Virgin Mary.
