Confederate losses during the Civil War outnumbered Union losses, and those losses were not forgotten by southerners who survived the war. Each year on the last Monday of May, Americans celebrate Memorial Day. Memorial Day is a federal holiday that honors and mourns American military personnel who died while performing their duties in service to the United States Armed Forces. Memorial Day has a rich history and one that’s worth revisiting as the nation prepares to honor the sacrifices made by its military personnel over the centuries. • Freed slaves played a role in the establishment of Memorial Day. The American Civil War is the deadliest military conflict in American history, as the Union and the Confederacy each suffered more than 800,000 casualties by the time the war ended in 1865. According to History.com, as the war drew to a close, hundreds of Union soldiers who were being held as prisoners of war died and were buried in a mass grave in a Confederate prison camp in South Carolina. After the Confederate surrender, more than 1,000 now-freed slaves honored those recently deceased Union soldiers during a ceremony in which they sang hymns and distributed flowers. The ceremony was dedicated to the fallen soldiers

According to data from the U.S. Energy Information Administration and the United Nations, Americans consume 4.39 liters of gasoline per capita each day, while Canadians consume 3.62 liters per capita each day. In lieu of driving everywhere this summer, men and women who want to be more mindful of the environment can leave their cars home more frequently. Rather than driving the family to a nearby ice cream stand, walk or bike there instead. Run as many errands on foot or on a bicycle as possible. Walking or cycling is a great way to get some time outdoors on warm summer days, and reducing fuel consumption is an equally great way to help the planet.

Memorial Day is celebrated each May to commemorate the people who died in service of the United States of America. Even though barbecues and visions of the upcoming summer weather may command much of the attention come Memorial Day weekend, the holiday really serves as a remembrance for those military members who paid the ultimate sacrifice for their country, as well as the personnel who continue to protect and serve today. Memorial Day origins Memorial Day was first known as Decoration Day and was borne out of the Civil War. on May 30, 1868, General John Logan, a national commander of the Grand Army of the Republic, decreed General Order No. 11, which designated the day for the “purpose of strewing with flowers, or otherwise decorating the graves of comrades who died in defense of their country during the late rebellion, and whose bodies now lie in almost every city, village and hamlet churchyard in the land.” May 30th was chosen because it wasn’t the anniversary of any particular battle.
It took several years for the first state to recognize the holiday, which New York adopted in 1873. By 1890, all northern states recognized Decoration Day. When the holiday changed from commemorating those who died fighting the Civil War to honoring Americans who died fighting in any war after World War I, the South began to recognize it as well. Honoring the military Although Memorial Day pays homage to the brave people who perished fighting for their country, it also is an opportunity to recognize the military men and women and their families who continue to work to ensure the freedom of Americans. The United States Armed Forces is renowned for its size and strength. Various sources suggest the size of the United States military is somewhere between 1.4 and 1.6 million active service people. The military is comprised of the Army, Army National Guard, Navy, Air Force, Marine Corps, and Coast Guard. Each of these military branches also has its own reserves. There are many ways to honor

Hope House Ministries (HHM) is a nonprofit organization located in Port Jefferson. They provide compassionate, comprehensive and competent care for the poor, the marginal and the wounded among us. This commitment is woven in the Gospel vision that all life is sacred and every human person is unique and has the right to be respected and protected. They have accomplished much over the 40+ years they have been helping others with minimal financial assistance from federal, state or county agencies. They depend on the generosity of private contributions, fundraising events and corporate donations. Hope House Ministries services people in both Nassau County and Suffolk County, offering services free of charge. Together, their staff and volunteers have created an empowering sense of family and community that are the change agents, helping young people grow in self-discipline, critical thinking, problem solving skills and personal responsibility. All of the services Hope House Ministries offers are FREE! This includes housing, supportive professional services, counseling, healthcare, insurance, transportation, food, clothing and opportunities for education both for both high school, college or trade school. When explained to those new to their agency, few believe it possible. Many question how they are able to stay open. The answer is best left to the words of one of our alumni, “Hope House is truly a miracle. And that miracle is healing.” Simply put, your contributions make this miracle happen. The three most popular programs that HHM runs are their Hope Academy at Little Portion Friary, Montfort Therapeutic Residences and Pax Christi, their Emergency Shelter. See below for more information on each of these programs. Hope Academy at Little Portion Friary: In response to the opioid crisis, HHM
acquired Little Portion Friary in Mount Sinai in 2016 as a means of increasing their ability to serve more young men struggling with opioid addiction. This program assists in the development of a life plan with short and long term goals. It also promotes the development of interpersonal skills. The length of stay varies based on need, averaging 12-18 months. Each person is treated individually by professional clinical staff. Montfort Therapeutic Residences: This is an intensive therapeutic treatment facility for children ages 11-18 who find themselves caught in the family court system. These children come to them at a time of great crisis in their young lives. Montfort Therapeutic provides the young residents with a healthy, stable environment, a school program, individual counseling, group dynamics and educational recreational outings. The program also includes aftercare services for children returning home. Pax Christi: This emergency shelter offers guests who are homeless a safe alternative to the streets. Pax Christi offers case management, drug and alcohol counseling, mental health counseling, linkages to benefits and resources in the community, as well as the basics of food and shelter. Over 50 active volunteers assist with cleaning, making beds, painting, serving meals and providing food and clothing for guests. HHM is truly a selfless and heartwarming non-profit right here on Long Island. No one should ever feel that they need to suffer alone, that they are not being heard, that they can’t ask for help or that they are hopeless. Life’s WORC (www. lifesworc.org), a 501(c) (3) nonprofit organization dedicated to supporting people with intellectual and developmental disabilities and autism through its residential, community and trust services, which this year is celebrating its 50th anniversary – Celebrate 50! - wants Long Island, Queens and Manhattan residents to know that its Family Center for Autism in Garden City, NY offers scholarships to help those who are financiallychallenged to gain access to its wide range of programs. In addition to its services, which include Behavioral Analysis Services, Family Support Services, and School-based Services, the Center offers art camps, sports and fitness, music
and movement, scient and tech, salon and spa, and vocational programs. Life’s WORC Family Center for Autism’s Senior Director Nicky Faranda noted that, “Through the generosity of private donors, we are able to offer those in need scholarships ranging from $500 to $1,500 to pay for any of our program classes. To date, we have raised almost $200,000 which has enabled children through adults to participate in programs designed to build skills in specific areas, while encouraging socialization, recreation and the development of valuable life skills.” To date, the Life’s WORC Family Center for Autism has awarded over 239 scholarships valued at $245,589 for
individuals with autism. The scholarship program, which was first introduced in 2015, was created when it became clear that there were many in the community who simply did not have the additional financial resources to pay for the Center’s programs despite the fees being kept to a minimum. Today, in light of the economic impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic, and the increasing number of families experiencing financial hardships, the scholarship program is even more critical. External Diploma Program The External Diploma Program offers adults 21 and over, the opportunity to receive credit for their life experiences, and earn a high school equivalency diploma without the challenge of taking lengthy timed examinations. EDP, is a competency based program for students who are unable to attend classes or who prefer to work at home. Successful candidates for EDP include former ESL students, students who have been out of school for
prolonged periods of time, or students who fare better without the structure of tests. This program is an alternative to other programs.
