Honoring the military Although Memorial Day pays homage to the brave people who perished fighting for their country, it also is an opportunity to recognize the military men and women and their families who continue to work to ensure the freedom of Americans. The United States Armed Forces is renowned for its size and strength. Various sources suggest the size of the United States military is somewhere between 1.4 and 1.6 million active service people. The military is comprised of the Army, Army National Guard, Navy, Air Force, Marine Corps and Coast Guard. Each of these military branches also has its own reserves. There are many ways to honor active,

Memorial Day origins Memorial Day was first known as Decoration Day and was borne out of the Civil War. On May 30, 1868, General John Logan, a national commander of the Grand Army of the Republic, decreed General Order No. 11, which designated the day for the “purpose of strewing with flowers, or otherwise decorating the graves of comrades who died in defense of their country during the late rebellion, and whose bodies now lie in almost every city, village and hamlet churchyard in the land.” May 30th was chosen because it wasn’t the anniversary of any particular battle.
It took several years for the first state to recognize the holiday, which New York adopted in 1873. By 1890, all northern states recognized Decoration Day. When the holiday changed from commemorating those who died fighting the Civil War to honoring Americans who died fighting in any war after World War I, the south began to recognize it as well.

Bikers Against Child Abuse, Inc. (B.A.C.A.) is a non-profit, 501(c)(3) organization that exists to provide aid, comfort, safety and support for children that have been sexually, physically and emotionally abused. They are dedicated to the principle that ‘one of the basic rights of childhood is to be safe and protected’. When a child’s family or environment has failed them, B.A.C.A. stands ready to help. This organization started as an idea to help one wounded child. This child was eight years old at the time and was so frightened of his perpetrators that he would not leave his residence. Their founder, having had kind and loving experiences with bikers in his youth, was moved to include this boy in his biker circle. Within weeks this boy was seen all over town playing with other children and riding his bike. The idea to rally the biker community in defense and in support of children was actualized in 1995, when the first ride was held to visit wounded children and bring them into the biker family. That first ride had twenty seven bikes present. From there it was only a matter of time before the word spread quickly about what was happening in Utah. Shortly after forming the first chapter in Utah, another chapter was formed in that state, then Oklahoma, Missouri and Texas. The rest is part of the B.A.C.A. history. One of the greatest and most unique assets of B.A.C.A. for children is their “biker family attitude”. Bikers are a tightly knit group! The brotherhood and family values are not just a
way to live, but a way of life. One for all and all for one is not just a quote but it is their reality. After children have been introduced into the B.A.C.A. family they are not helpless or powerless anymore. If you want to meet a B.A.C.A. representative and find out additional information on their organization you can attend one of the following upcoming events, where B.A.C.A. will have a tent set up with brochures and more: Alive After Five: Thursday, June 27, 2019 in Patchogue. The Great South Bay Music Festival: Saturday, July 20, 2019 and Sunday, July 21, 2019 in Patchogue. If you are interested in becoming a B.A.C.A. member you must meet certain requirements. Some requirements are that you have a desire to help abused children, you have regular access to a motorcycle, you are 18 years or older, you can pass an NCIC fingerprint check and you can attend monthly meetings and Chapter events (their meetings are held the second Sunday of every month at the American Legion Hall in Bohemia at 9:00AM unless it’s a holiday). You can also donate to this organization at anytime on their website. Another Organization You Can Get Involved With: Agape Community Church Mastic, NY Agape Community Church is a non-profit organization based in Mastic. They are focused on the Long Island community and will be holding their annual Back To School Event on Saturday, August 17 from 12-5PM, where they will be giving away free school supplies and they will serve refreshments. They are already taking donations for this event and are attempting to raise additional funds and supplies this year. They understand that a lot of children may begin a new school year this upcoming fall without all the needed supplies. Agape Community Church believes community support is crucial to helping these children. Donations of any size are welcome. Essentials Presentation Trish Portnoy and Chris Salerno, both teachers at West Islip’s Beach Street Middle School, recently presented at the 21st annual ASSET Conference at the Huntington Hilton. Educators from across Long Island meet at ASSET to discuss technology, innovation and best practices.
Portnoy and Salerno’s presentation showcased the Computer Essentials program available to Beach Street’s seventh and eighth grade students. “We consider Computer Essentials to be the ‘class behind the class,’” said Salerno. “It’s not just a typing class, it teaches students how
to apply Google Apps in their general classes and introduces students to college and career interests as they begin to build their personal digital portfolio. Computer classes were once a dying trend, but Computer Essentials is bringing it back and with a purpose.”

Culture Celebration West Islip’s English as a New Language and World Languages departments held various activities at Udall Road Middle School this spring to celebrate, acknowledge and recognize various languages spoken by many district families. ENL students and teachers created posters with their favorite diversity and cultural quotes for display around the school. They also posted their favorite words or phrases in their
native languages for fellow students and faculty to learn. Udall students who speak languages other than English participated in morning announcements by showing off their skills in their native language. Udall also held its annual Cultural Celebration Assembly. Joined by members of the school’s International Club, Udall and West Islip High School ENL students shared fascinating and unusual facts about their

native countries with their peers, teachers, and administrators via slide presentations, videos, songs, dances and poetry. “The reason to celebrate every year is to help make students understand the importance of studying a foreign language, and to help students appreciate and recognize the cultural diversity we are lucky to have in our school district,” said Udall Principal Daniel Marquardt.
West Islip High School students in James Stidd’s Intro to Trades class recently completed the interior of their model wall sections. Working in groups, students replicated scaled-down home wall sections.
Structures included a cinder block foundation, 2x4 wall framing, interior door, drywall, spackling and paint. Working light switches and outlets as well as functional plumbing fixtures were included inside the walls.
The exterior phase of construction has already begun and will include framing, sheathing and shingling a roof as well as installing exterior vinyl siding.

Don’t Make These Mistakes after A Collision (NewsUSA) - In the U.S. alone, there are 10 million car accidents every year, and the tense moments following a car accident, even a minor one, can be scary and stressful for everyone involved. Drivers and passengers can feel confused and unsure of what to do. Even the most experienced and seasoned drivers can make basic mistakes after they have been involved in a traumatic event. Simple, avoidable mistakes could cost you time and money, or lead to personal,
medical and legal issues. Here are some of the most common mistakes to avoid after a collision: * Fleeing the scene: Leaving the scene of an accident could land you in serious legal trouble. You may be in shock, but the most important thing to do is stay where you are. Check on your passengers, and once you exit your vehicle, check with the other driver involved in the accident. Try to remain calm and
wait for law enforcement to arrive on the scene. If it is safe to do so, use your cell phone to take photos of your vehicle to document the damage that resulted from the accident while you wait for police. * Not reporting the accident: Even if it’s just a minor collision, always report the accident to the police. Never let someone convince you to avoid calling the police. If you decide to make a claim with your insurance
