Confederate losses during the Civil War outnumbered Union losses, and those losses were not forgotten by southerners who survived the war. Each year on the last Monday of May, Americans celebrate Memorial Day. Memorial Day is a federal holiday that honors and mourns American military personnel who died while performing their duties in service to the United States Armed Forces. Memorial Day has a rich history and one that’s worth revisiting as the nation prepares to honor the sacrifices made by its military personnel over the centuries. • Freed slaves played a role in the establishment of Memorial Day. The American Civil War is the deadliest military conflict in American history, as the Union and the Confederacy each suffered more than 800,000 casualties by the time the war ended in 1865. According to History.com, as the war drew to a close, hundreds of Union soldiers who were being held as prisoners of war died and were buried in a mass grave in a Confederate prison camp in South Carolina. After the Confederate surrender, more than 1,000 now-freed slaves honored those recently deceased Union soldiers during a ceremony in which they sang hymns and distributed flowers. The ceremony was dedicated to the fallen soldiers

West Islip Senior Swimmer Triglia Sets New School Record

St. John the Baptist Diocesan High School recently hosted, “Showers of Kindness” in honor of Mother’s Day. The Student Council led this effort to collect new baby items to be donated to the families served by The Wyandanch

Health Center. This center is one of 42 Health Centers run by Sun River Health on Long Island, NYC, and the Hudson Valley that serve so many moms and their babies in our community. The moms are in dire need of items for their newborns

At this year’s Section Islip High School senior individual medley. She XI swimming and diving Jacqueline Triglia took swam the event in a school championships, West fifth place in the 200-yard record-breaking 2:09.15, shattering her own prior school record of 2:12.14, which she had set just one week earlier. Triglia is one of the most decorated swimmers in West Islip history, placing in the state championships, winning the 100yard butterfly county championship in 2018 and 2019, as well as holding the following school records: 200-yard individual medley (2:09.15), 100-yard butterfly (55.91), 100yard backstroke (59.11), 200-meter individual medley (2:29.81) and 100-meter butterfly (1:06.00). Triglia is preparing to paint an oceanic-themed mural at the district’s Paul J. Hope House Ministries (HHM) is a non-profit organization located in Port Jefferson. They provide compassionate, comprehensive and competent care for the poor, the marginal and the wounded among us. This commitment is woven in the Gospel vision that all life is sacred and every human person is unique and has the right to be respected and protected. They have accomplished much over the 40+ years they have been helping others with minimal financial assistance from federal, state or county agencies. They depend on the generosity of private contributions, fundraising events and corporate donations. Hope House Ministries services people in both Nassau County and Suffolk County, offering services free of charge. Together, their staff and volunteers have created an empowering sense of family and community that are the change agents, helping young people grow in self-discipline, critical thinking, problem solving skills and personal responsibility. There are so many ways that this non-profit can truly help you get your life on a better track. Additionally, there are plenty of ways for people to get involved in helping others through volunteering. Over the past 40 years, thousands of people have donated their time and talent to help this organization reach those in need. If you are interested in volunteering with Hope House Ministries individually or with a group, here are just some of the areas you can do so: Office Work, Cooking, Photography, Transportation for Residents, Maintenance, Gardening/Farming/ Grounds Keeping, Transportation for Furniture/Donation Pick Up. Here’s two reasons why you may want to consider giving to this organization: What if this was personal? Imagine your son or daughter, your grandchildren, your own brother or sister, or parent experiencing homelessness, addiction, mental health issues, domestic violence or severe depression. Imagine your family torn apart by circumstances out of your control. If you were connected to a crisis situation you would be very comforted to know that an entire community of supporters have made it possible for your loved one to find professional help and healing free of charge. So consider joining that network of support and be a part of the Hope House Ministries’ family. All of the services Hope House Ministries offers are FREE! This includes housing, supportive professional services, counseling, healthcare, insurance, transportation, food, clothing and opportunities for education both for both high school, college or trade school. When explained to those new to their agency, few believe it possible. Many question how they are able to stay open. Why does NY State have such restrictive guidelines for animal hospitals?

The NY State government has put detailed guidelines in place for all businesses, not just veterinarians. For example, medical facilities are required to screen patients before admitting them into the facility.

It’s much easier to us to talk to you directly about your pet’s health. However right now we are required to follow guidelines issued by New York State that state “Curbside intake and pickup of animals should be used, wherever practical, to minimize the numbers of clients in waiting areas and exam rooms.”* Although that creates a lot of extra work for our staff, we are committed to complying with the NY State safety guidelines during the COVID-19 crisis, and to protect our client’s health and safety. *Exceptions can be made in situations like euthanasia

MATH LEAGUE WINNERS - Three students at West Islip’s Udall Road Middle School recently placed in the top 4 in the region in the Math League’s 2020-2021 seventh grade math contest. Alzheimer’s Caregiver Tips

Caring for a loved one with Alzheimer’s disease can be stressful, and for those who are new to caregiving, it can also feel overwhelming. To help families cope with the challenges of dementia caregiving, the Alzheimer’s Association is teaming up with the Frank & Barbara Broyles Foundation to share helpful tips. On May 20, the two organizations will host “Play by Play: Creating Care Plans,” a virtual program on combating caregiver stress and maintaining a healthy lifestyle. “A plan can make a real difference for anyone involved in caregiving,” said Kate Anastasia, director of programs at the Alzheimer’s Association. “Every team needs a

playbook to succeed, and the same is true of caregiving teams. Team members can often ignore their own needs, leading to stress and potentially health problems. Every good caregiving plan includes both the person with Alzheimer’s or dementia and the people providing care.” The Frank & Barbara Broyles Foundation was founded in honor of former University of Arkansas football coach and athletic director Frank Broyles and his wife, Barbara, who both had Alzheimer’s disease. In 2006, Coach Broyles penned “Coach Broyles’ Playbook for Alzheimer’s Caregivers,” which offers strategies and goaloriented advice for those caring for loved ones with

Alzheimer’s. Those who attend the free program will receive a free copy of Broyles’ book. According to the Alzheimer’s Association, there are more than 6 million Americans living with Alzheimer’s disease and more than 11 million family members caring for them. In New York alone, there are 410,000 people battling the disease and 586,000 caregivers. “Play by Play: Creating Care Plans” will begin at 2 p.m. EDT on Thursday, May 20.
