Symphonic Pops Of Long Island Will Perform A Free Concert The West Islip Public Library is thrilled to host the wonderfully entertaining Symphonic Pops of Long Island Orchestra in a free concert on May 21st at 1pm in Meeting Room A of the Library. The concert, the first to be performed by SPLI at this Library, will celebrate the 95th Birthday of longtime West Islip resident Norma Downey as well as Armed Forces Day! This

is a concert not to be missed! The Symphonic Pops of Long Island is a fiftyfive-member community orchestra that rehearses in Wantagh but gives numerous free concerts all over Long Island. The SPLI was initially established in 1979 as the “Senior Pops” but has since changed their name to “Symphonic Pops” featuring and embracing multi-generational

musicians of all ages. The mission of the SPLI and their conductor since 2010, Stephen Michael Smith, is to bring the joy of “pops” music to Long Island communities. A New And Improved Fitness Center At West Islip High School On April 28, the West Islip School District completed the renovations to the West Islip High School fitness center. The newly renovated facility features state-of-the-art equipment, which provides opportunities for beginner, intermediate and advanced trainers. “We were able to design a room where all individuals, regardless of ability or experience levels, can feel comfortable training and receive the physical, mental, emotional and psychological benefits of

exercise,” said Tim Horan, West Islip School District’s director of health, physical education, athletics and recreation. ”The room, complete with cardio equipment, strength training machines, power racks, functional training space and custom West Islip branding, will provide a foundation of health and wellness for the student body.” Upon entering each of the three entrances, users have two large open lines of sight/walking spaces without the clutter

of machines. Cardio machines are lined by the windows, and the addition of the power racks provide a variety of exercises while minimizing risk for all users. Six treadmills and three high-tech internet-based pieces of equipment will be forthcoming to the fitness center. West Islip High School’s physical education staff have received initial training, and students have already begun using the space.

Most of their programming is devoted to revitalizing communities, broadening the minds of children and assisting families in need.

Despite the word Suffolk in its name, the agency operates a number of programs in both Nassau and Suffolk counties. One such initiative is its Services for People with Developmental Disabilities program. As defined by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, “developmental disabilities” are a group of conditions arising from an impairment in physical, learning, language, or behavior areas. These conditions typically begin during a young child’s developmental period, may impact day-to-day functioning, and usually last throughout a person’s lifetime. EOC of Suffolk offers a comprehensive array of services for people with developmental disabilities aimed at enhancing their quality of life. Its specially trained staff will customize a program to help maximize each person’s ability to live with independence and self-sufficiency. In addition, personalized case management helps to ensure that individuals receive the government benefits to which they are eligible. The overall offering has six components: Community Habilitation Services: Under this program, EOC of Suffolk provides individuals with support and services that focus on developing life skills and community integration.

Respite Services: EOC of Suffolk provides temporary relief from the demands of caregiving, helping to reduce overall family stress. Respite/Recreation: This service component provides educational, occupational and recreational activities, as well as opportunities to increase socialization skills. Services take place on-site as well as on ﬁeld trips to help enrich the learning process. Self-Directed and Fiscal Intermediary Services: This program empowers individuals to exercise the maximum amount of control over the types of support and services they wish to receive. They also have a voice in the selection of providers and in how services are provided. Working with employers and funding agencies, people with developmental disabilities can engage as full citizens in communities of their choosing. EOC of Suffolk can also arrange for the services of a Fiscal Intermediary for individuals who have chosen self-direction – supplemented by administrative and billing support.
