Fire Island Lighthouse Events The Fire Island Lighthouse Preservation Society will present the following: Plein Air Art Studio Friday and Saturday, May 25th and 26th Artists from Wet Paints Studio Group will be painting on site in the Lighthouse area. Doing it Right Learning about Australia took a fresh turn at West Islip’s Bayview Elementary School after students in Maria Lucie’s classroom learned about the sacred instrument, the didgeridoo.

Student Natalie Aspetti’s mother, a music teacher, was able to borrow a didgeridoo from her school and shared it with the class, giving the students a chance to examine and play the instrument.

“My students not only learned about the uses of the didgeridoo, but were able to try it out,” said Lucie. “It added a new dimension to their knowledge of the art and culture of Australia.”

Volunteers are the backbone of PalO-Mine, and there are many different ways to get involved. Pal-O-Mine has two major fundraising events that are coming up in June. One is their 16th annual “Day at the Races,” which will be on June 8th at Belmont Racetrack. This is held the day before the Belmont Stakes and is a wonderful outing, offering lunch, a premium open bar and door prizes. Their 10th annual Golf Outing, “Par Fore the Horse,” will be held on June 25th at Southward Ho Country Club in Bay Shore. This will include golfing, brunch, course refreshments, an open bar, cocktail hour, dinner, gifts and prizes. www.GOTRLongIsland.org Girls on the Run is an empowerment program for girls in third through eighth grade that inspires them to be joyful, healthy and confident, while using a fun, interactive curriculum that creatively integrates running. Meeting twice a week in small teams for the 10-week season, volunteer coaches teach girls life skills through engaging lessons and fun movement activities. At each season’s conclusion, all girls from teams across Long Island meet up for a celebratory 5K running event. Their Spring 5K will take place on June 2nd at Hofstra University. They are in need of volunteer coaches (no running experience is required) who have a desire to make an impact on the lives of young girls. All training is provided. They also need volunteers to help out at their upcoming 5K in the areas of: registration, hospitality, pre-run fun and course cheer. Anyone for Dessert?

years, most of which have since been reflected upon with a degree of amusement in hindsight. At the time, however, well let’s just say there are moments when our entire eating experience seemed to be part of a rather lengthy segment of Candid Camera. There was the time, while up in Saratoga Springs one summer years ago, that our meal was interrupted by a rather persistent fly. Upon swatting said flying creature, he began a free-fall into what had been - up to that point - a rather enjoyable pasta entree of my mother’s. As she watched, horrified, the formerly agile winged critter began what appeared to be a slow dog paddle through the sauce. Both my father and I were in complete hysterics by this point. When the waiter stopped by the table to check on whether we were enjoying the meal, my mother pointed to the at this point - motionless fly and replied, “Well, I was enjoying it very much, but…” The waiter, without missing a beat, shrugged

No offer of a replacement, no sympathy for the ruined meal, no nothing. The customer is always right, indeed. Of course, there are times when the customer seems obliged to seat him/herself, place the order and perhaps even head back into the kitchen to cook it as well, such is the poor quality of service. On the other end of the spectrum, I’ve been witness to a waitress literally sweeping a plate out from under my friend’s poised fork, determining that she was, in fact, finished. As we sat, incredulous over this turn of events, we didn’t know whether to laugh or demand a refund. After about two hours of nursing our drinks and “contemplating” dessert, more appetizers, perhaps a breakfast course… we decided to take the check. Oddly enough, the waitress didn’t seem amused. Fast forward to this past Cinco de Mayo, a “holiday” I have never made a special point to celebrate

This year, my friend and I (different friend, same Candid Camera tendencies) decided to wait it out to dine in style at a genuine Mexican establishment on the busiest Saturday night of the year. After about an hour, we were seated. We ordered drinks, appetizers and entrees, all of which arrived in quick succession. Having already decided what we wanted for dessert, we patiently waited for the waiter to return. And waited…. And waited… Each time he passed our table, all attempts to make eye contact and ﬂag him down went unnoticed. We were, we determined, completely invisible. Nearly an hour later, a random waitress happened to glance our way. Can we order dessert from you? Certainly. Nearly another 30 minutes elapsed before our own waiter, the one who had seemingly abandoned our table, returned. Dessert? We looked at each other. We had now been in this venue for precisely four hours. Cheers, indeed.

Love My Parks NYS Senator Phil Boyle hosted his 6th annual “I Love My Park Day” event at five sites throughout the 4th Senate District this past Saturday, May 5th. Senator Boyle showed his support for all the work volunteers were accomplishing during the annual event that took place at Connetquot State Park, Heckscher State Park, Bayard Cutting

Arboretum, Belmont Lake and Robert Moses State Parks, amongst other parks around N.Y State. It was a great day for volunteers to celebrate New York’s park system by cleaning up parklands and beaches, planting trees and gardens, restoring trails and wildlife habitat, removing invasive species, and working on various improvement projects.

“I Love My Parks Day” is an exciting statewide event, organized by Parks & Trails New York in partnership with the New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation and local Friends groups, to celebrate and enhance New York's parks and historic sites to bring visibility to the entire park system in need.

Source of Creativity Delving into the school’s STEAM bin boxes, thirdgraders at West Islip’s Bayview Elementary School were hard at work designing, building and writing about their many creations. Play-Doh and toothpicks in one box were used to

make a ramp. Another held index cards and tape, which the students used to try to build the tallest structure possible. Yet another box contained popsicle sticks and velcro, used to construct a bridge. The final box was filled with Unifix cubes. Asked to

create a toy or game with these cubes, the group made toy spiders. “They were so creative and drawn into the tasks, it was hard to tear them away from it,” said teacher Maria Lucie.
