A Day At The Races The 6th Annual A Day At The Races will be held on Saturday, June 21st, from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. at Belmont Racetrack. This premiere social event helps fund the MDA Summer Camp program. The local MDA Summer Camp is July 19th through 25th in Center Moriches, NY and provides children age 6-17, from Long Island, the Boroughs and Westchester areas, who are living with neuromuscular disease a one-week sleepover camp where they can make memories that will last a lifetime. The cost to send just one kid to camp is over $800. MDA picks up the tab for all of our campers, and receives no government

funding. MDA Summer Camp can take place thanks to the generous donations provided through generous donors and great programs like A Day At The Races. Thank you to the Committee Members, EastEnd Marketing/Valero, ERA Top Service Realty and the National Association of Letter Carriers. Fellowship Awarded Nicole Bustamante, a Stony Brook University senior majoring in Health Sciences with a concentration in Public Health and a minor in Women’s and Gender Studies, at has been selected to participate in the prestigious Congress-Bundestag Youth Exchange for Young Professionals (CBYX), a year-long, federallyfunded fellowship to study and work in Germany. Ms. Bustamante, a Tappan, New York native, was selected as one of 75 participants for this unique fellowship program. Since 1984, approximately 1,700 Americans have been awarded this opportunity to gain cultural, academic, and practical work experience in Germany. Bustamante will be participating in the 31st year of the CBYX program. While in Germany, Ms. Bustamante will attend a two-month intensive German language course, study at a German university or professional school for four months, and complete a five-month internship with a German company in her career field (Public Health). Participants are placed throughout Germany and have the opportunity to learn about everyday German life from a variety of perspectives. “Nicole Bustamante is a shining example of the impact experiences outside of class can have on a student’s career trajectory,” said Marianna Savoca, Director of the Career Center, Stony Brook University. “Her years at Stony Brook have been filled with involvement in student organizations, like the National Residence Hall

Honorary and the Alternative Spring Break Program, volunteer work at Stony Brook Medical, and internships with the United Nations and a NGO that supports children’s health in developing countries. We are so proud of her.” “I have always loved learning and being a chosen for

the Congress-Bundestag Youth Exchange for Young Professionals Fellowship allows me to learn not just about my field of interest in International Public Health on a university and professional level, but I get to learn about a whole new culture during my year long stay in Germany” said Bustamante. “I am so honored to be a participant in this program and I am ready to have a lifechanging experience.” Conceived by members of the United States Congress

and the German Parliament [Bundestag], the CBYX program is financially supported by the Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs of the US Department of State under the authority of the Fulbright-Hays Act, and by the Bundestag. Participants come from a wide variety of career fields, and from all over the United States. Participants must be U.S. citizens or permanent residents between the ages of 18-24, and have clear career goals and experience in their professional fields. Young professionals in STEM, business, agricultural, and vocational fields are especially encouraged to apply, though candidates in all career fields are eligible. Did you ever have one of those days when... well, let’s just leave it at that. We’ve all surely had them, whatever it is they entail, which usually leads to unnecessary levels of irritation and aggravation. And, more often than not, we are quick to blame others for the series of events which unfolds. Seems only fair. Maybe there is something to that old “got up on the wrong side of the bed” excuse; perhaps our days are destined to

progress precisely how our respective moods dictate. If this is true, then we may as well just crawl back under the covers and call it a day, no? No sense even trying to give it a go and turn things around. Or so many would have you believe… The thing is, if you want to walk around being miserable, go for it. But is it really necessary to “spread the joy” as it were and ensure that everyone you come in contact with is similarly infected with your dark pessimism? Does misery truly love company that much? I think not.

Why the rant on this particular occasion? Just timely observations is all – as one black cloud-carrying individual after another passes through, it is all one can do to stay focused on the task at hand. And that is – to live each and every day to the fullest, to do at least one thing exclusively for yourself and to refuse to let others drag you down into the abyss alongside them. The words are simple enough…now to put them into practice so that “one of those days” doesn’t become every day.

In addition to a dominoes tournament, children’s activities, and tented art exhibits displaying works by some of our area’s finest artists, the Festival will feature a steady stream of rising and established salsa ensembles, including opening with Mambo Loco (undoubtedly the busiest band on Long Island); the premier salsa

orchestra Johnny Ray & Salsa Con Clase; two-time Grammy winner Ray De La Paz; and closing with Tito Puente Jr., son of the legendary salsa star and a world-class performer in his own right. Sunday’s 48th Annual Puerto Rican/Hispanic Day Parade will kick off at noon, on Fifth Avenue beginning just north of the Southern State Parkway and continuing northward 1½ miles to 4th Avenue. With some three hours of marchers, floats, music and dancers, this event celebrates both the Puerto Rican and other Latino cultures and a future of solidarity and respect among Long Island’s many Latino and other ethnicities. This year’s honorees includes the American Red Cross, and Tito Puente Jr. will appear again, as godfather. The State’s second largest parade of its kind - the

largest is the annual Puerto Rican Day Parade held in Manhattan - at least 50,000 people from throughout Long Island and beyond are expected to attend. These events are hosted by Teatro Experimental Yerbabruja, a nonprofit organization whose primary mission is to use the arts in its numerous programs as a means of achieving constructive social change in Long Island’s diverse communities. Part of that mission is to hold free admission cultural events at which diverse audiences come together to see and hear culturally diverse artists. However, these events would not be possible without the help of its friends and supporters, including Home Depot and public funding provided by Suffolk County.

I have made a decision! I’m proud to say that I will be a member of the Villanova University Class of 2018! After years of hard work, my efforts have finally paid off. It has always been my dream to get into a college that would make me happy, and Villanova certainly does that. As one of the top business schools in the country, Villanova is a great selection for my major, Marketing. Even though some people may not have heard of it, my college has a stunning campus located just a few miles outside of Philadelphia. I would not have been able to get into this

prestigious university without pushing myself through high school. Even though my Grade Point Average was not the greatest during my four years at St. John’s, I had one of the highest ACT scores in the grade. Despite being below the top 10%, I believe my scores were high enough to keep me in the competition for ‘Nova. In addition, my extracurricular activities are what really swayed the admissions officers’ decisions. Now that I’ve gotten into my dream school, I look forward to helping my younger brother do the same. After going through the entire process, I feel as

though I am well versed in the art of the application. Although I may not be the smartest, I realize that one’s grades do not define him/her. There is more to the applicant than a number. Holistically, any student can contribute to an outstanding freshman class. With that being said, if anyone has any questions about my decision, or the application process, feel free to e-mail me. St. John the Baptist Diocesan High School will honor two men who have made significant contributions to the school over the years at its annual Men of Vision Gentlemen’s Dinner. All proceeds will benefit St. John’s Visionary Fund. This dinner will be held at View in Oakdale on Tuesday, June 17th, at 6 p.m. Honorees include: Robert DiOrio, of West Islip, Independent Financial Consultant, will be the recipient of the Jack Lessing Meritorious Service Award for his long term commitment to St. John the Baptist. Joseph Vacca, of Amity Harbor, Operations Manager, Loyal Building Services, will be the recipient of Men of Vision Gentlemen’s Dinner Award for his commitment to the enhancement of the academic and extracurricular environment at St. John the Baptist Diocesan High School. Robert DiOrio has been a dedicated Parent, Volunteer

and Benefactor. He has been a vital part of the St. John the Baptist community ever since his children entered the school. He is the proud parent of two graduates: his son Austin ’06 and his daughter Lynn ’10. As a member of the school’s Board of Advisors, he has been part of several programs contributing to the school’s success. Robert is also an active volunteer for many of the school’s fundraising events. Joseph Vacca directs the dedicated team who maintain all of St. John’s daily operations. Stony Brook University has been designated a Tree Campus USA by the National Arbor Day Foundation, in recognition of the university’s dedication to campus healthy forestry management, sustainability and environmental stewardship. SBU earned its recognition through the implementation of five core standards that promote the health of trees and student involvement to improve their forests. The University met the standards by establishing a campus tree advisory committee that developed a plan, allotting annual expenditures and brought in community members in the observance of Arbor Day. By introducing a Growing Red Days event last summer, Stony

Brook was able to attract students to beautify the campus while teaching them important planting methodology. Last Arbor Day, Stony Brook University President Samuel L. Stanley Jr. welcomed New York State Senator Kenneth P. LaValle to campus to join the University’s Sustainability program as they planted native trees provided by the Department of Environmental Conservation in the North Entrance Meadow as part of a restoration project to replace trees downed by Superstorm Sandy. “These goals and standards helped shape and define the campus’ vision to foster a healthy, safe and beautiful tree population,” said President Stanley. “These initiatives bring together members of the campus

Broadway Classroom Beach Street Middle School’s Select Chorus was given opportunity to participate in a New York City Broadway theater workshop called, Broadway Classroom. The workshop was designed to engage students in a variety of theatre disciplines and was developed in accordance with the

The chorus students were broken into two groups, where they learned singing and acting strategies. At the end of the workshop, each group performed

Good Sam Golf Benefit The 17th Annual Good Samaritan Hospital Medical Center Golf Classic will be held on Wednesday, June 11th, at Southward Ho Country Club in Bay Shore, with a morning and afternoon shotgun (7:45 a.m. and 1 p.m., respectively).
