to continue feeding the animals, building doghouses, taking in new rescues, and trying to cover all their expenses. Some rescue organizations are seeing adoptions and fosters up but this is because people are homebound right now. This leaves the shelters worried about what will happen to the animals when people go back to work. There are some people who fear for their own well-being and financial stability, which motivates them to drop their pets off at the rescue shelter. They feel they can’t adequately take care of their pets during this time, so they surrender them, putting more strain on shelters. Many shelters have to cancel fundraising events that usually bring in a lot of money to fund their programs. Additionally, some shelters offer spring break camps as a fundraising tool, and those had to be canceled due to the pandemic. Many rescue organizations and shelters are trying to help people care for their pets by providing them with food. This helps to keep the person from surrendering the animals to the shelter or rescue organization. Food donations to many shelters are down, simply because people are focused on their own families and are staying home. This leaves shelters scrambling to try to come up with enough money and food to continue feeding all of the animals, as well as providing them with any medical care they may need. “The pandemic has

Most of us are aware of the toll that the pandemic is having on humans around the country, and even around the world. Yet the economic impacts are being felt beyond humans. The animals are being impacted in numerous ways through this situation, leaving some animal rescue organizations to struggle in being able to provide their services. Guardians of Rescue has had an increase in dogs to care for, while their financial stability to do so declines. Guardians of Rescue is overwhelmed with the hardest hit people who can’t feed their pets and taking in abandoned animals left to fend for themselves which has become a big problem. Now, they are now turning to the people and asking that their organization be rescued amid the pandemic. “We have been providing our rescue services for over 10 years, but now we are struggling to keep our organization going,” explains Robert Misseri, president of Guardians of Rescue, an animal rescue organization. “We are in jeopardy because of the perfect storm that this pandemic has created for organizations such as ours. Many people are living paycheck to paycheck so pets are in trouble.” The pandemic has impacted Guardians of Rescue and other animal shelters in a variety of ways, including: Due to so many people having their employment impacted by the virus, donations to the organization are down. This past week, our Publisher was able to purchase toilet paper and paper towels in bulk. He kindly left a large stash of these items in our office and let each employee know that they can take some home as needed. It was a selfless gesture and people appreciated it. However, when I got home I chuckled at the thought of it! Who would have thought that toilet paper and paper towels would ever be viewed as hot items and that employees would get excited over the distribution of paper products? Not me!

As we still find ourselves enduring this pandemic, we are slowly yet surely seeing the light at the end of the tunnel. T h e r e is talk of re-opening businesses, heightened anxiety seems to be diminishing and the curve has begun to flatten. My thoughts and prayers remain with those in need, as well as those serving on the frontlines. We will continue to stand strong and one day this pandemic will fully be behind us.

Did You Know? Do you relish the idea of an afternoon nap? If so, you’re in good company. According to the National Sleep Foundation, John F. Kennedy, Winston Churchill, Napoleon, and Albert Einstein each fancied afternoon naps. Youngsters nap, and so do many seniors. But by and large, humans are part of the minority of mammals

that do not sleep for short periods of time throughout the day, instead dividing their days between sleep and wakefulness. However, there are some benefits to catching a midday snooze. The Mayo Clinic says napping can be a way to catch up on sleep lost during the night or if a person is feeling sleepdeprived. It also may be

a way to relax, increase alertness and improve mood. Naps should take place before 3 p.m. and not exceed 20 minutes. The longer and later one naps, the greater the potential it will interfere with nighttime sleeping or backfire and cause daytime grogginess.

Catholic Health Services Offers Tips On Talking To Kids About Coronavirus As part of the effort to contain the spread of coronavirus, local schools have been ordered to close for several weeks. This change in routine leads to many questions from children who want to know why they can’t attend school or spend time with their friends. Providing answers to inquisitive youngsters can be challenging for parents, trying to balance sharing information without unnecessarily alarming their kids. “With schools closed and many parents working at home temporarily, children will want to know what is causing the changes to what they perceive as normal life,” said Catholic Health Services Chairman of Behavior Health Ronald Brenner, MD. “Also, mobile technology gives many young people access to news and information, which could overwhelm them and cause anxiety.” The New York State Office of Mental Health offers several suggestions for parents speaking to their kids about

coronavirus. - Think about and rehearse scripts for discussing coronavirus with their children. Kids take cues from caregivers about how anxious they should be about a topic. - Discuss the situation openly. Avoiding the topic or providing blanket responses may fuel anxiety. - Don’t give more information then is requested. Check to make sure your children understand your response by asking them to repeat back what they have heard and let them know you are open to more questions. - Help your school-aged child and adolescents set boundaries on their information flow in the same way you are setting your own boundaries. Help them identify factual sources of information and set appropriate intervals to check-in. - Keep as many routines intact as possible. For children who are out of school, it is important to maintain other familiar routines such as mealtimes and bedtimes. - Use technology to keep

children in touch with a friend or older family members. This allows them to maintain connections while adhering to calls to stay at home to helpprevent the spread of coronavirus. - Encourage physical activity and time outside, where possible. Staying active and having opportunities to be outdoors safely are helpful in mitigating anxiety and building resilience. - Use this situation as an opportunity to teach distress tolerance skills that will be helpful to your kids in any situation. For those who wish to speak to a mental health professional, CHS offers a host of services including telepsychiatry, which improves access to psychiatric services for Emergency Department (ED) patients, particularly after normal office hours. The service is currently offered in the EDs of Mercy Medical Center in Rockville Centre, St. Catherine of Siena Medical Center in Smithtown and Good Samaritan Hospital Medical Center in West Islip.

TEEN ADVISORY BOARD MEETING (ZOOM) Wednesday, May 6 @ 6pm

Teen Advisory Board members will provide input on teen services. TAB members will also have a chance to earn community service hours based on the needs of the library. 1 hour of community service will be awarded.

Since you can't come to us, let us send the seeds to you. Itching to get outside and start your spring planting? Let us help! We have a variety of seeds recently purchased for our seed library that we would love to send to you. This service will be available to all West Islip residents ! Browse the list of seeds on our website at www.wipublib.org/childrens/seed-library/. Choose up to 5 types of seeds, (you can choose multiples of the same type if you'd like) and send an e-mail to childrens@westisliplibrary.org. In the e-mail, we ask you to include your name, the shipping address, and your choice of seeds. Some seeds have a limited supply, so we will fill orders on a first-come, first-served basis.

For teens in 7th - 12th grade. If you are looking to receive community service, we are now offering projects each week you can do from home!
