Why does NY State have such restrictive guidelines for animal hospitals?

We enjoy having you there too.

The NY State government has put detailed guidelines in place for all businesses, not just veterinarians. For example, medical facilities are required to screen patients before admitting them into the facility.

However right now we are required to follow guidelines issued by New York State that state “Curbside intake and pickup of animals should be used, wherever practical, to minimize the numbers of clients in waiting areas and exam rooms.”* Although that creates a lot of extra work for our staff, we are committed to complying with the NY State safety guidelines during the COVID-19 crisis, and to protect our client’s health and safety. *Exceptions can be made in situations like euthanasia

Are these still necessary? Restrictions are lifted on other things. By July 2020, restrictions like curbside check-in have helped reduce the number of people diagnosed with COVID-19 in New York State down from over 10,000 a day to below 1,000. At the same time we have seen infections rise dramatically in other states who had fewer restrictions.

SPECIAL AUTOMOBILE ISSUE How To Get A Wi-Fi Enabled Car Staying connected is more important than ever, whether you’re at home or on the go. Connecting to Wi-Fi is typically easy at home, but what about when you’re in the car? Wi-Fi-enabled vehicles are becoming hot commodities for drivers. There are various ways to access the internet in a car. Drivers can buy an add-on device. Even mobile gadgets that aren’t specifically designed for vehicle applications can be easily connected. The devices plug into the 12-volt accessory outlet. OBD II devices connect to a car’s OBD II port. This is most often located below the steering wheel. Mechanics use this port to run digital vehicle diagnostics. However, it also can be used to create a Wi-Fi hot spot with an OBD device. Another option is to use a smartphone to create a mobile hotspot through a cellular data plan. Anyone in the car can then tether their phones or other devices to the smartphone to access the internet. Many vehicles are now equipped with their own

Wi-Fi capabilities. This means you will not need an extra device to access the internet. However, you will probably need to sign up for an additional data plan through whatever service the car manufacturer uses to offer Wi-Fi capability or through your mobile phone carrier. AllConnect. com says Wi-Fi plans for vehicles start as low as $10 per month and may include unlimited data. Furthermore, car Wi-Fi is often different from a mobile hotspot because it is likely to offer better connection and more security while preserving mobile

data and phone battery life. Cars that are not equipped with Wi-Fi can have it as an add-on with an installed wireless vehicle router. These routers range from $200 to $600 and are professionally installed. Having Wi-Fi in a vehicle is handy when taking road trips or when work requires internet connectivity. Dedicated vehicle internet can help save on mobile phone data plans and battery life. Plus, people increasingly staying at home can rely on a vehicle’s Wi-Fi system as a back-up should their home internet go down.

The Benefits Of Wearing Seat Belts The importance of wearing seat belts in vehicles has resonated with drivers and passengers across the globe. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, the national seat belt use rate in passenger vehicles in 2019 was 90.7 percent. And despite their simplicity, particularly when compared to

the various other technologies available in modern vehicles, seat belts remain an incredibly effective device against injury and even death, though only when drivers and their passengers remember to engage them. For example, the NHTSA notes that seat belts saved an estimated 14,955 lives in 2017 alone. Unfortunately,

the NHTSA also reports that 47 percent of the 37,133 people killed in motor vehicle crashes in 2017 were not wearing seat belts. Studies have indicated that front seat riders in cars who wear their seat belts can reduce their risk of fatal injury by 45 percent, while front seat riders in trucks can reduce their risk for fatal injury by 60 percent.

Nonetheless, the event was a big success, which included participants from Maine to Hawaii. This year the event seeks to raise $30,000 and to reach an even broader audience. Proceeds from this year’s fundraising campaign will enable HKS to assist individuals who are blind, visually impaired or have a combined hearing and vision loss to receive equal access to opportunity. The 5k Run. Walk. Ride. seeks to Break Down Barriers to Independence, Build a More Inclusive Society and Bring Inner Capability Out. Participants register online and then record their runs with a timer or smartphone app such as Strava. After the run, participants update their time on the website for credit. In addition to raising funds for HKS, participants can compete to win a variety of prizes, including TD Bank and Nike gift cards in amounts ranging from $500 to $100. Full details are online. Nearly 70 percent of all car sales are used vehicles, likely due to the the rising costs of new cars and the increasing quality of their used counterparts. While previously owned vehicles make the best financial sense in a lot of cases, experts encourage motorists to keep a few things in mind. “For the safety of everyone sharing the road with you and to protect your purchase, it’s important to stay up-to-date on car maintenance,” says Doug Turner, director of service operations at Byrider, the nation’s largest used car and finance network of dealerships. April is National Car Care Month and to help you extend the life of your used car, the automotive experts at Byrider are offering the following tips: • Follow the maintenance recommendations of the

manufacturer to keep it running as smoothly as possible. This includes filling your vehicle with the proper gas, and using the proper oil per the manufacturer’s recommendations. • Prioritize preventive maintenance to avoid issues down the line. Pay special attention to noises or warning signs that could indicate your vehicle needs maintenance. Remember, warning lights on your dashboard are illuminated for a reason. Understand what they mean and address them as-needed. • Keep the interior and exterior of your vehicle clean to prevent rust and other issues. • Use only trusted repair services that hire Automotive Service Excellence (ASE)certified technicians. This certification can make a big difference when it comes to quality repairs and maintenance. • Complete as-needed or at a minimum, an annual inspection, on the vehicle. Keep in mind

that different seasons of the year require different inspections and repairs. • Use quality parts. • When buying a vehicle, stick to retail dealers that put cars through a detailed inspection process to help ensure a given vehicle’s safety and reliability. At the same time, consider dealers with an attached service department to help streamline maintenance and repairs. “Your relationship with the dealership shouldn’t end once you drive the car off the lot,” adds Turner. Oil changes and fluid topoffs are part of routine maintenance, but it can be easy to forget about other important parts of the vehicle, including tires. Rotating tires is vital to their upkeep. Bridgestone Tires advises that tire rotation involves routinely repositioning a vehicle’s tires in specific patterns from front to back and side to side. According to Big O Tires, the front tires tend to wear on the outside edges because the tire leans over when a driver turns a corner. The rear tires just follow the front ones, so they usually wear more evenly. By leaving tires in place, the outside edges on the front tires will wear

down much faster than the rest and those tires will need to be replaced sooner. Rotation may be required by tire warranties. Rotation also keeps the tires working properly. Experts generally advise tire rotation every 6,000 to 8,000 miles, even if they do not show any signs of wear. It is challenging to determine if weather treads are uneven or how much wear has been sustained just by looking at them. Rotating tires can prolong the life of tires and decrease how frequently they need to be replaced. Rotating tires keeps the tread depth uniform and helps maintain traction and consistent handling across all four tires. Bridgestone says the tire rotation pattern that is best for a particular vehicle depends on the type of tire being used. Patterns are recommended by the standardizing body of the tire industry, called The Tire and Rim Association,

Inc. Individuals can consult with professional mechanics about the proper way to rotate tires. Many tire manufacturers or automotive stores that have sold customers tires also will do tire rotations — some free of charge. In addition to proper traction, minimizing uneven tire treads causes the vehicle to be more balanced, advises Wrench, a mobile auto repair and maintenance company. This enables the driver to have more control even when roads are slippery. Many auto service centers will then align and balance tires after they have been rotated. At this time the mechanic will likely check brakes as well, since it is easy to see and reach them when the tires are off. Tire rotation is an important component of vehicle maintenance. Check with a qualified automotive professional to see if it’s time to have your vehicle’s tires rotated.

Sun exposure can be dangerous for the body, but the sun’s rays also can damage automobiles. Leaving a vehicle exposed to sunlight for extended periods of time increases the risk of damage to its interior and exterior. It’s important that car and truck owners recognize this so they can mitigate the potential problems sun and heat may cause. Testing conducted at the State Farm® Vehicle Research Facility found interior vehicle air temperatures have been recorded well in excess of 145 F. Interior surfaces exposed to direct sunlight have been recorded at temperatures in excess of 195 F.

The automotive repair service Fix Auto says the sun’s ultraviolet rays can cause the vehicle’s paint to peel and fade over time. UV rays break down the molecules in the paint and make it appear dull. The company says red paint is particularly susceptible because red paint molecules deteriorate faster in the sun than other paint colors. To prevent potential sun-related damage, take these precautions. • Avoid direct sunlight. Park in the shade as much as possible. • Crack a window. If it is safe to do so, lower interior air temperature and equalize air pressure by opening up car windows a little. • Use a windshield

protector. Reflect sunlight away and keep the vehicle cool with a windshield sun protector that unfolds and slides into place. • Use a protectant wax. A layer of wax can

offer another layer of protection against the sun’s ultraviolet rays. • Wash the car frequently. Washing and hand-drying the vehicle helps to remove dirt and

(StatePoint) What does Earth Day have to do with veterans suffering from psychological trauma brought about by their combat experience? A lot, actually. That is because one organization, Help Heal Veterans (Heal Vets), is busy delivering thousands of arts-and-crafts therapy kits to veterans each month, and most kits are made largely from recycled materials. The kits provide an important therapeutic benefit for veterans and active-duty military recovering from wounds, injuries and the long-term psychological effects of warfare, including post-traumatic stress disorder and traumatic brain injury. Heal Vets kits include leatherwork, models, woodwork, jewelry, painting, needlecrafts, poster art, scrapbooks and more, and are created from materials that would have otherwise ended up in landfills.

Heal Vets has been doing this work for 50 years, and commitment to environmental sustainability has become an important and growing part of its mission. “Over the last five years, we have recycled almost one million pounds of materials,” says Joe McClain, retired Navy captain and CEO of Heal Vets. “By upcycling, we responsibly utilize numerous materials, mostly textiles, one of the biggest contributors to landfill waste in the US.” Indeed, since 2017, Heal Vets has worked with partner organizations to repurpose the extraordinary amounts of potential landfill waste, including: • 300,000 pounds of leather from airplane seats. Southwest Airlines and Arise Foundation have donated leather from airplane seats since 2018. These materials are used to make wallets, footballs, and components for

moccasins, such as liners and insoles. • 55,216 pounds of tanned deer skins. The Elks, a partner since 2002, donates tanned deer skins from Elks Lodge members around the country that are used to make moccasins, wheelchair gloves, dreamcatchers, pouches and more. • 454,500 pounds of upholstery. Since 2017, La Z Boy has donated upholstery fabric that Heal Vets uses in kits to make messenger bags, oven mitts, bowl cozies and more. • 112,416 pounds of cabinets. Since 2019, American Woodmark has donated cabinets, which have been repurposed for wood kits to make items like boxes and birdhouses. • 40,000 pounds of automobile seats. Since 2019, Magna has donated auto seats used to make purse kits. Heal Vets is seeking

new partners for its dual mission of helping veterans heal and contributing to a sustainable economy. Businesses can donate materials that reduce their environmental impact and support the recovery of veterans who have served their country
