Students in the Beach Street Middle School Select Chorus enjoyed an exciting and educational day in New York City on March 16th, experiencing musical theater both interactively and on the big stage. The West Islip student singers began their day at a professional dance studio in Midtown, where they met two performers from the musical “The King and I” for a 90-minute personal workshop, singing and dancing with the professional performers. Then it was off to the Lincoln Center Theater to view a live performance of “The King and I.” “What a thrill to see the musicians we met on the stage and to see the show,” said teacher Camille Persico.

with Jamie Lynn Ryan By: Jamie Lynn Ryan It’s been a rough year. Less than four months in and, well, I know many people who are already looking for a do-over. Sure, every period of time has its ups and downs, highs and lows. But honestly, since the moment the ball dropped in Times Square this past New Year’s Eve, it seems that everything began falling right along with it. At least it’s Spring. There is something uplifting about sunshine-filled afternoons and flower blossoms that does bring a smile to the face, however fleeting it may be. And of course, those sunworshippers among us have to be looking forward to
summer and beach outings and barbeques. But until then… It’s April. April 15th, to be exact, as I write these words. Tax Day (although, technically speaking, we were graced with a few extra days tacked on to the filing deadline this year). The Easter Bunny has come and gone. Baseball diamonds are abuzz with activity. Pretty soon, school will be out of session and the parks and pools will be flooded with families having fun. And so it goes. From dawn until dusk, one season into the next, day after day, week after week, month after month; until, before you know it, a decade has passed in the blink of an eye. In just a couple of
weeks, I will be celebrating my 11th year as editor and columnist at this very paper. How much has changed in that span of time… The best thing we can do – the only thing, really – is to embrace each day, with all its nuances, and appreciate whatever it may bring into our respective lives. The list of things beyond our control is endless; the key to happiness lies in how we react to them, what we learn from them, and how we use them to better ourselves as individuals. I’m no philosopher, but that much I’ve picked up in my 33 years roaming this planet. Here’s wishing everyone a brighter tomorrow… and the day after… and the day after…

The Music Lovers Club was founded in 1925 to share an interest in and appreciation of music, to extend to others the pleasure derived from and to provide scholarships to outstanding young musicians who are seniors in high school and live in the towns of Babylon and Islip. The hope is that these scholarships will help foster the continuation of their musical development. This year, as they celebrate their 90th year, they are proud to say that on Sunday, April 24th, they will be presenting their 66th annual Scholarship Benefit Concert. The performers for the concert
will be this year’s winners. They will join a list of almost 200 other winners from the past 65 years. Following the performance, they will receive their scholarship awards. This year’s winners are: • Third Place - Kwaku Owusu, Bay Shore High School, Baritone • Second Place - Nicholas Burkel, Sayville High School, Cello • First Place - Sara Mercurio, West Islip High School, Alto Saxophone After the concert, there will be time to meet and greet the performers and share in fellowship and light

Members of the Gemini Youth Orchestra Concert Winds were welcomed recently to the March General Meeting of the Suffolk County Legislature. Under the direction of Valerie Jones, the Concert Winds Ensemble performed our National Anthem and Trumpet Voluntary to open the meeting. The Gemini Youth Orchestras is composed of 250 musicians from across Long Island, who perform in ensembles including the Concert Winds, Philharmonia, String Orchestra, Repertory and Youth Symphony.
