Students and staff at the Eastern Suffolk BOCES Masera Learning Center (MLC) in West Islip are feeling peaceful. Something fishy is going on! The new addition of a fish tank, donated to the school by Special Education Teacher Melissa Kearns’ aunt is the cause of it all. To help promote the cause of peacefulness, business and industry partner BTJ’s Jungle of West Islip donated fish for the tank. Tom Niehoff of BTJ’s said, “I’m happy to be a part of bringing

something to the students that they really love. They are infatuated with the fish and they really like the way the lights change in the tank from blue to red and green.” Mr. Niehoff volunteers his time, visiting MLC once a month to clean the tank. On his recent visit, Niehoff brought a parrot fish. The students gathered around the fish tank to watch as Mr. Niehoff acclimated the fish to the water. “The students are also learning responsibility and discipline,” said Kearns. “They feed the fish every day and visitations to the tank

have been incorporated into the reward system at Masera.” Studies have shown that sitting quietly and watching fish swim around in an aquarium has a soothing effect on people. Research has shown that it lowers blood pressure and heart rates. The staff and students showed their appreciation to Mr. Niehoff for donating his time and the fish by presenting him with a Certificate of Thanks because he has made a difference in the lives of everyone at Masera Learning Center.

Shopping with a Chance of Meatballs

I love food shopping. Not browsing for clothes. Not trying on shoes. But aimlessly wandering the aisles of the grocery store, scanning each shelf for potential ingredients in my always innovative “culinary creations”… that, I find enjoyable. This fascination with the supermarket dates back to when I was quite a bit younger, as I recall thinking what fun it would be to have a job stocking shelves with boxes and cans, bottles and bags. Perhaps it was the meticulous lining up of items that appealed to me; needless to say, I did not go on to make a career in this field after all. Growing up, I had zero interest in cooking, or even observing the process involved. Anything beyond using the toaster or microwave, perhaps

the oven on rare occasions, seemed beyond the scope of skills I wanted to learn. Boiling water? Nope. Not even a chance. I had visions of scalding liquids cascading over the top of the pot, pasta and all. And so it remained; until, that is, I moved into my own apartment and realized that perhaps cooking was one of those basic necessities that one needed to master in order to exist in the real world. {along with doing laundry, but that’s a story for another column} And so, with some helpful hints from Mom, and plenty of mixing and matching and “trying” various combinations of things, I began to slowly master this ancient art. By master, I mean I have accumulated enough variations of pasta dishes

and “fancy” salads to get by most weeks. Anything more intricate – well, that’s still a work in progress. Case in point: I have still not attempted, nor do I have any desire to, any entrees involving meats. No raw chopped meat or chicken cutlets or pork chops to tangle with for this girl. I’ve often said I could probably get by being a vegetarian, and one look in the meat department seems to confirm this notion every time. Not that I don’t want to learn how to make a nice traditional Italian sauce with meatballs. I often ask my mom to show me how, with one caveat – can I wear rubber gloves while rolling them? And that, dear readers, is why sauce has yet to be added to my repertoire.

(the mesh) that is placed under the urethra to support it like a hammock. The purpose is to prevent the urethra from excess descent with the increased abdominal pressure. Mesh has been used successfully for a number of years internationally with approximately 80-90% satisfaction rates. Potential complications of mesh are well known. It needs to be thoroughly under the vaginal tissues so it does not erode into the vagina. Erosions have occurred even years after the placement of the sling. These problems are treatable. Women who suffer from embarrassing leakage need not suffer in silence. Great success and thousands of satisfied women have had their lives improved after surgical repair. The urge type incontinence refers to the inability to get to the toilet on time when the urge to void begins. There are many causes for this type of incontinence. It may vary from one incontinent episode a day to multiple accidents, daytime and nighttime frequency. The leakage tends to be of larger amounts as the bladder starts to empty despite trying to stop it. This type of leakage is not not treatable with surgery like the stress type. Decreasing the amount of coffee, tea, colas, alcohol and spicy food may help to some degree. Voiding more frequently, prior to the urge may prevent the accident. Medications are often used. The purpose of

Leakage of urine is not normal but is very common in women. In most cases the problem can be improved. There are a number of reasons why women may have problems with their bladder control but the two most prevalent types are stress incontinence and urge incontinence. Stress incontinence is when some loss of urine takes place at the same moment as the cough, laugh or exercise. It is related to the increased abdominal pressure which puts excess pressure on the bladder. It is common in women in the years after childbirth but may also be a problem for cigarette smokers, people with asthma and chronic constipation. It may also be hereditary. The repeated straining movement of the cough or pushing to have a bowel movement weakens the connective tissues. Treatment options include pelvic ﬂoor exercises to try and strengthen the muscles of the pelvic ﬂoor, biofeedback and surgery. When the leakage is substantial surgery is usually the best course of action. Surgery for stress incontinence has been greatly improved in the last few years with the development of slings. In the past, the surgery required abdominal incisions with a hospital stay and prolonged recovery. Today the procedures have become ambulatory with quick recovery and very good success rates. The sling refers to a piece of material

At the conclusion of the breakfast, Legislator Kennedy thanked all who attended and wished them success in their future endeavors. “I’d like to thank each and every one of you for making this breakfast a success,” Legislator Kennedy stated, “but also for fighting the good fight every day, whether it be as a women against adversity, or in support of women fighting against adversity.” She concluded by hoping that their experiences would help inspire other women in Suffolk County.

Elementary Scientists Science was in the air during March at West Islip’s Manetuck and Paul J. Bellew Elementary Schools, with both schools holding successful science fairs. More than 130 students in grades K-5 participated in Manetuck’s fair, providing them with the opportunity to explore various STEM topics and share what they discovered with their classmates. While family and friends

enjoyed the fair that evening, students visited during the school day with their classes, armed with clipboards that contained an exit ticket activity that they were required to fill out as they browsed the various projects, which included topics such as solar power, plant nutrition, bone mobility, electric circuits, color mixing, snakes, dinosaurs, homopolar motors, lava lamps, static electricity

and water-powered renewable energy. At Bellew, more than 150 students participated and shared their findings after investigating topics like the solar system, electricity, simple machines, buoyancy and the amount of sugar in a daily diet. “It was wonderful to see such student enthusiasm about the STEM field,” said Bellew Principal Rhonda Pratt.
