Eerie - the only word to describe that morning. The morning sun was slowly inching toward the gray sky, revealing a light fog. The mist seemed to grow thicker as the sun crept through its tendrils. Glancing up and down the block, I crossed the street to wait for my bus to come and whisk me off to the hellhole known as high school. The screen of my phone illuminated the vapor that twirled around me, coiling itself around me like a snake squashing its prey. A twig snapped on the lawn behind me, causing me to spin around, getting whipped by my own cherry hair. Squinting my eyes, I scanned the dying lawn, but saw nothing. Unable to shake the thought of someone standing in the darkness, watching me, I stepped further into the protection of the towering street lamp. The dusty yellow glow swallowed me willingly as I wrapped my arms protectively around myself. Antsy, I leaned forward, allowing myself to see past all the parked cars to see the yellow lights of the bus working its way toward me. A sense of relief flooded me. Dropping my guard, a loud banging noise sounded behind me, causing me
to jump, stirring up the fog around my sneakers. Glancing over my shoulder, I noticed a white gate swinging in the wind, crashing into its post. The squeaking of tires drew my attention back to the street. In front of me stood the school bus with its doors wide open, welcoming me with a blast of heat. I slid into the seat high above the back wheel, before glancing once more at the lawn to see if anyone was there. A dark figure moved closer to the sidewalk. The eyelids of the being opened, revealing glowing yellow eyes that latched onto mine the second they were scanning the world around them. A faint memory of piercing gold eyes studying me ran through my head at the speed of light so I could not even visualize what the owner of the one-of-a-kind orbs was. The bus began to roll away, but my eyes were glued to the golden ones hidden in the fog. When we rounded the corner, my contact was broken without my consent. The memory began to play again as I leaned back into my seat. A square jaw. Smooth almond skin. Sun-kissed hair. I knew those eyes. It was –

Hotline Launched The Department of Health Services is pleased to announce a new initiative to help address the continuing opioid epidemic in the County. Effective April 1st, 2016, the Department in partnership with the Long Island Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence (“LICADD”) will operate a 24/7 substance abuse hotline – 631.979.1700 - to link callers to appropriate treatment. All callers will be screened by a certified medical professional and referred to a local provider. Follow-up will be done to ensure timely access to care. Local providers through the Suffolk County Communities of Solution have been instrumental in the development of the initiative and are committed to partnering with LICADD to get callers into care as soon as possible. This hotline is available to those in crisis, contemplating sobriety or to guide family and friends who may have a loved one suffering from addiction.

I was summoned to compose this week’s column, something about “deadlines” and this thing called “Seasons™ Magazine,” whatever that is. Word is, my Human was especially overwhelmed and couldn’t think of anything creative to write. So here I am, yet again, to save the day… From my understanding, there’s a section called “Snippets” in the middle of each edition of the newspaper this week, highlighting aforementioned magazine and its latest spring content. com, or purchased for the highly reasonable yearly rate of $24.95. Being, well, not of the Human sort, I can’t say I find the extensive listings of Long Island happenings of much use. My Human rarely moves my new home anymore, so my biggest adventure is pretty much watching her occasionally cook. Speaking of, there are also several tasty recipes to be found in the pages of Seasons™, for those culinary sorts. Who doesn’t love a good meal, right? I know I do. Several per day, in fact. Heck, I’d eat once an hour if she served me. But I digress. Back to the magazine. There are features on Mother’s Day, Father’s Day and Memorial Day, tips on eating healthy and
getting in shape for bathing suit season and… well, you’ll have to read it yourself – I only made it past the Table of Contents. Tiny brain = short attention span. All I know is dinner has been exceptionally late these last several weeks as my Human worked tirelessly to finish putting together the editorial content. It had better be good! And so, once again, I swim in to save the day. Buddy to the rescue! Because, really, who wouldn’t love an endorsement from everyone’s favorite Betta? West Islip residents approved the 2016-2017 Library Budget in a vote held at the Library on Tuesday, April 5th. The $3, 774,621 operating budget was approved by a vote of 289 yes to 55 no. Library Board Vice-President Margaret Bell was reelected to a five year term as Library Trustee with 321 votes. “The Board of Trustees of the West Islip Public Library wish to express their appreciation to all those residents who participated in the budget vote process,” said Vice President Margaret Bell. “Both the Board of Trustees and the library staff look forward continuing to serve as a community center for life-long learning and a connection to the wider world of information in all its forms.”

By: Shirley Koval Lieberman Spring has sprung, so why haven’t I? The earth is revitalized. Everywhere I look, there are buds bursting to show off their finery. Where is my photosynthesis? If I get too much sun, I get more wrinkles, burnt skin, cancer. No raking or thatching will help me...oh no! The gardeners come and look about. Oh yes my dear, you need some chemicals to kill the weeds, and seeds to fill in the bald spots of grass. Great idea, here comes the retin A, the alphahydroxyl and this and that. The wrinkles keep coming. The hair gets thinner and grows in all the wrong places. And the garden looks great! The trees grow tall and need a trimming. I grow short, I’m never winning. The colors are glorious, the reds, the purples, the whites and yellows. My colors all come out of a jar, a brush, a pencil. IT JUST ISN’T FAIR!

West Islip’s Paul J. Bellew Elementary School was transformed into career central on March 18th. Coordinated by Bellew’s site-based team composed of parents, teachers and administration, the schoolwide Career Day provided students in grades K-5 with the opportunity to explore many different career possibilities through in-class presentations and hands-on learning experiences in the library. More than 30 parents and other community members volunteered their time to visit the school for the event, sharing their knowledge and expertise with the students in the hopes of sparking interest in today’s ever-changing job market. Students learned about diverse careers such as sailing, police work, tugboat operation, civil engineering, nuclear medicine and 3D printing. Several classes helped to construct pizza boxes for a local pizzeria and learned about the challenges associated with owning a business. Students also learned how to properly hold a newborn baby from the nurses at Good Samaritan Hospital, and about the importance of saving for the future, thanks to advice from a banker. “Career Day was fantastic,” said Principal Rhonda Pratt. “Our students were active participants who asked questions, responded and reacted to what they were learning about. I am thankful to the parents and other community presenters who visited Paul J. Bellew to bring what they do for the world into our school.”

Ranked No. 1 At West Islip’s Udall Road Middle School, seventhgrade student debaters have staked their claim as best in the nation. Udall students participating in the National Current Events League meet after school to debate serious issues
such as terrorism, gun control and the upcoming 2016 presidential election. The league’s four meets are held quarterly and consist of 30 rigorous multiple choice questions. Udall’s results are then tabulated and compared with other middle schools across the
nation. At the end of the school year, medals are awarded for the top student at Udall and the highest-ranked national team and student. After the second meet of the year, Udall’s team was ranked No. 1 in the nation.
West Islip’s Udall Road Middle School recently held a weeklong fitness challenge open to all students, in which they tracked how many minutes
per day they exercised, competing for prizes such as fitness bands, water bottles and jump ropes. Eighth-grader Karalynn Cantwell finished in first
place, seventh-grader Jose Feliciano came in second and sixth-grader Cali Disbrow earned third.

Down Under Discoveries
LENTEN PERFORMANCE - During this year’s Lenten season, the students of Our Lady of Lourdes School in West Islip performed a Living Stations of the Cross. Grades six, seven and eight participated as actors, narrators and prayer leaders. It was a very moving presentation.
Students in Maria Lucie’s third-grade class at West Islip’s Bayview Elementary School recently studied the geography, culture and people of Australia. As part of this Down Under discovery unit, the students created original art projects based on the style of Aboriginal bark art,
drew maps of Australia and studied all of the territories, researched Australia’s native animals, learned and sang the classic Australian song “Waltzing Matilda,” and developed PowerPoint presentations as well as a haiku, which they shared with visiting parents in the classroom.
In a unique experience, the third-graders also connected via FaceTime with a cousin of Lucie who lives and works in New South Wales in Australia, giving them direct information about the differences in climate, population and time of year.
