West Islip residents approved the 2017-2018 Library Budget in a vote held at the Library on Tuesday, April 4th. The $3, 838,335 operating budget was approved by a vote of 300 yes to 43 no. Marilyn Gutierrez was elected to a five year term as Library Trustee with 160 votes and Louise Sokolowsi was elected to a three year term with 142 votes. “The Board of Trustees of the West Islip Public Library wish to express their appreciation to all those residents who participated in the budget vote process” said President Margaret Bell. “Both the Board of Trustees and the library staff look forward continuing to serve as a center for the community and a connection to the wider world of information in all its forms.”

while going to high school and college, and then later on while working a full time job, I tended to miss quite a number of regular rehearsals leading up to the big recital at the end of the year. Somehow, it always came together in the end. All these years later, my retention seems to have… slipped a bit, I suppose. Mid-April, and I’ve only missed one class – and yet the dance has taken on a “brand new” vibe each week. There’s something to be said for getting old too. And with that, it has occurred to be that I will be reaching the midpoint of my thirties this summer. How did it get so late so soon? as Dr. Seuss mused. How, indeed.

Mesh has been used successfully for a number of years internationally with approximately 80-90% satisfaction rates. Potential complications of mesh are well known. It needs to be thoroughly under the vaginal tissues so it does not erode into the vagina. Erosions have occurred even years after the placement of the sling. These problems are treatable. Women who suffer from embarrassing leakage need not suffer in silence. Great success and thousands of satisfied women have had their lives improved after surgical repair. The urge type incontinence refers to the inability to get to the toilet on time when the urge to void begins. There are many causes for this type of incontinence. It may vary from one incontinent episode a day to multiple accidents, daytime and nighttime frequency. The leakage tends to be of larger amounts as the bladder starts to empty despite trying to stop it. This type of leakage is not not treatable with surgery like the stress type. Decreasing the amount of coffee, tea, colas, alcohol and spicy food may help to some degree. Voiding more frequently, prior to the urge may prevent the accident. Medications are often used. The purpose of

Leakage of urine is not normal but is very common in women. In most cases the problem can be improved. There are a number of reasons why women may have problems with their bladder control but the two most prevalent types are stress incontinence and urge incontinence. Stress incontinence is when some loss of urine takes place at the same moment as the cough, laugh or exercise. It is related to the increased abdominal pressure which puts excess pressure on the bladder. It is common in women in the years after childbirth but may also be a problem for cigarette smokers, people with asthma and chronic constipation. It may also be hereditary. The repeated straining movement of the cough or pushing to have a bowel movement weakens the connective tissues. Treatment options include pelvic floor exercises to try and strengthen the muscles of the pelvic floor, biofeedback and surgery. When the leakage is substantial surgery is usually the best course of action. Surgery for stress incontinence has been greatly improved in the last few years with the development of slings. In the past, the surgery required abdominal incisions with a hospital stay and prolonged recovery. Today the procedures have become ambulatory with quick recovery and very good success rates. The sling refers to a piece of material

Arrow of Light Town of Babylon Deputy Supervisor Tony Martinez recently attended an Arrow of Light ceremony for Austin Wolk, of West Babylon, who recently earned his Arrow of Light Award. The Arrow of Light is the highest rank available for Cub Scouts, and it is the only insignia that may be worn on the Boy Scout
uniform. Austin, who was a member of Cub Scout Pack 104, will now follow the trail of boy scouting and enter Troop 151 of West Islip. Deputy Supervisor Martinez congratulated Austin on his many achievements as a Cub Scout and presented him with an official Town of Babylon proclamation.
