West Islip Robotics Team Earns Honors

West Islip High School’s robotics team participated and competed in the regional FIRST Robotics Competition at Hofstra University on March 25 and 26. The team advanced to the quarter finals. Junior Christopher Palazzo earned the prestigious FIRST Dean’s List finalist award. Students who earn this award are recognized as student leaders who have led their teams and communities to increase awareness for FIRST and its mission while also achieving personal technical expertise and accomplishment. Palazzo was nominated by his team. The nomination process included the completion of five separate essays to attest to meeting the philosophies of the FIRST core values of: discovery, innovation, impact, inclusion, teamwork and fun. The subsequent four essays supported his eagerness to increase awareness

also demonstrate academic excellence. Palazzo was selected to be interviewed by judges at the competition.

Outdoor 1.5-Mile Stations Of The Cross Walking Service Returns To Catholic Cemeteries Of Long Island

Catholic Cemeteries of Long Island is welcoming back its annual tradition of in-person walking of the Stations of the Cross prayer services at the Cemetery of the Holy Rood in Westbury on one of the most solemn days of the Christian calendar during the 2022 Lenten season. One of the largest attended events for Catholic Cemeteries of Long Island, Catholic faithful across Long Island are invited to return and take part in the tradition of following a 1.5-mile walking route throughout Holy Rood to commemorate Christ’s redemptive sacrifice through 14 stations each year on Good Friday, which is April 15th this year. Each station is signified by a different cross/sculpture at the cemetery. Deacons from Catholic Cemeteries of Long Island will assist in leading the service for attendees. The Stations of the Cross walking services were cancelled each of the past two years due to the COVID-19 pandemic. This year, hundreds are expected to take part in the Good Friday services. Faithful can also experience Holy Rood’s Stations of the Cross on their own with self-directed tours or via a virtual option for those who wish to partake from their homes.

The Catholic Cemeteries of Long Island’s Virtual Stations of the Cross can be viewed by visiting YouTube at the following link: Virtual Stations of the Cross Video. Faithful utilizing the self-directed option who are walking the Stations of the Cross on their own can download the Catholic Cemeteries of Long Island Stations of the Cross Prayer Booklet as a guide with specific prayers at each station: Stations of the Cross Prayers – Easy Print Format Stations of the Cross Prayers – Foldable Booklet Format Prayer booklets may also be picked up at Holy Rood Chapel. The Cemetery of the Holy Rood, located at 111 Old Country Road in Westbury, is open every day from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., with the Chapel closing at 4:30 p.m. daily. “Due to restrictions relating to the pandemic over the past two years, we offered a virtual Stations of the Cross for those wishing to follow in the footsteps of Jesus during his journey to Calvary. It is necessary to offer families the opportunity to connect with our Lord’s sacrifice which leads to his triumph over death and the promise of eternal life. Our

in-person Stations of the Cross services – both guided with our deacons and selfdirected – are back for 2022 as we expect large numbers of faithful to attend,” said Richard Bie, President/CEO of Catholic Cemeteries of Long Island. Catholic Cemeteries of Long Island owns and operates four cemeteries across Long Island including Cemetery of the Holy Rood in Westbury, Holy Sepulchre Cemetery in Coram, Queen of All Saints Cemetery in Central Islip and Queen of Peace Cemetery in Old Westbury. Queen of Peace is the first new Catholic cemetery to open on Long Island in decades and its chapel is expect to completed by the summer of 2022. Catholic Cemeteries of Long Island is dedicated to meeting both the spiritual and physical needs of the more than 1.4 million Catholics across the Diocese of Rockville Centre, which encompasses Nassau and Suffolk counties on Long Island, NY. Hope for Youth www.hfyny.org While vast numbers of young people on Long Island are fortunate to be raised in stable and well-functioning households, the sad truth is that many children and adolescents in Nassau and Suffolk counties face major difficulties as they grow up, confronting challenges such as substance use, mental health disorders, incarcerated parents, child abuse and trauma, amongst other issues. Fortunately, a number of highly committed non-profit organizations in our area are working every day to provide those young people with opportunities to improve their circumstances and to put their lives on a strong and promising footing. Hope for Youth, is one of these outstanding organizations. Founded in 1969, Hope for Youth is a private social service agency that works to facilitate positive change in the lives of children, adolescents and families on Long Island. Based in Amityville, the organization provides residential care, foster care, preventive services and out-patient programs that help young people become self-sufficient and achieve their full potential.

To fulfill its vision of offering residential, community-based alternatives for emotionally troubled children, Hope for Youth first opened a group home in Bellmore to serve adolescent males. Since then, the agency, which now has a staff of 175 employees and interns, has grown to offer a range of programs that provide a full spectrum of services, all reflecting a detailed and closely monitored hierarchy of needs of Long Island’s youth and families. While the bulk of Hope for Youth’s funding comes from contracts with Suffolk County, Nassau County and New York State, donations from supporters also serve as a key component of its budget. Hope for Youth also depends upon support from volunteers from the community, who help with administrative support, community outreach, fundraising, residential programs and event planning. The visionary founder of Hope for Youth was the late Nassau County Family Court Judge Elizabeth Bass Golding, a pioneer activist for children’s rights. Judge Golding had learned that, in the mid 1960s, half of the children in the state’s psychiatric hospital system were there simply because of the lack of suitable, viable, community-based home alternatives for youth. A problem solver, the judge proceeded to spearhead a

developmental disabilities including autism through its residential, community and trust services, announced that the North

Shore Young Professionals recently recognized its 50th Anniversary with a special fundraising event. The group, comprised of young

adults from Long Island under the age of 35 who share an entrepreneurial mindset and commitment to their local community, held its fundraiser at the Waters Edge in Centerport, NY and raised an estimated $17,000 for Life’s WORC. The event was spearheaded by North Shore Young Professional member Rosana Filingeri, Vice President, Business Development for Cybersafe Solutions. Rosana’s father, Ben Filingeri, is a Life’s WORC Board Member. The fundraiser, which featured networking, free professional headshots, games, and more was cohosted by North Shore Young Professionals’ founder Justin Soriano. Through its use of social events, volunteer work and community outreach, the organization strives help fellow young professionals with introductions to other industry peers toward advancing their careers, growing their businesses,

and supporting their broader aspirations. “We are very grateful for both the funds and the awareness the North Shore Young Professionals group has provided Life’s WORC,” said Life’s WORC Director of Development Tina Moreno. “The generosity of these young professionals and support of 50th anniversary is especially appreciated given today’s challenging economic period.” More About Life’s WORC Life’s WORC was founded 50 years ago after the closing of Willowbrook State School back in the early 1970s. As a young reporter, Geraldo Rivera exposed the deplorable conditions that existed within the then largest institution in the nation serving children with developmental disabilities. Rivera first learned about these conditions from Life’s WORC founder Victoria Schneps Yunis. Her daughter, Lara, diagnosed

at an early age with severe brain damage, was a resident at Willowbrook. When cuts in state funding caused the institution to fall into extensive disrepair, Schneps, along with other concerned individuals, picketed to fight for the rights of Willowbrook’s more than 5,000 residents. Rivera’s report, which earned him a Peabody Award, ultimately forced the closing of Willowbrook. Schneps Yunis started Life’s WORC and opened its first home in Little Neck, Queens. Its first residents were former Willowbrook residents. After nearly two years away from in person events, the American Heart Association, the world’s leading nonprofit organization focused on heart and brain health for all, announced the 2022 Long Island Go Red for Women® Luncheon will return to our community.
