The West Islip Public Library Board of Trustees has proposed an operating budget of 4,242,248 for 2022-2023 which will be voted on by residents on Tuesday, April 5, from 10:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. at the Library. Approval of the budget will result in a tax appropriation of $4,167,248 an increase of 1.5% and well within the Tax Cap calculated for the Library. The Budget/ Annual Report issue of the library newsletter, The Source, will be mailed to the community with details concerning the budget and the April 5 vote, about two weeks prior to that date. The proposed library budget recognizes both importance of maintaining the library as a valuable resource for the community and the challenges facing local taxpayers. The budget calls for increases in funding for library

materials, particularly e-Books, and children’s programs and activities, as well increases in building repair and maintenance contracts. The proposed library budget will result in an increase in the tax appropriation that is well within the tax cap for the Library, and that the average homeowner could be expected to pay about $6.39 more per year in library tax next year. “The Library Board realizes that while any budget increase is of concern to taxpayers” said Library Director Andrew Hamm, “this budget will result in a library tax rate that is less than it was two years ago due to the elimination of the debt service on the library bond.” Also on the ballot on April 5 is one full fiveyear position for Library Trustee. The incumbent

is Board President Marilyn Gutierrez, is running unopposed. All residents are encouraged to vote on Tuesday, April 5. For those who are eligible to vote in school/library elections but are not registered, a Registration Day will be held at the library on Tuesday, March 29, from 4-8pm. We encourage everyone over 18 years of age who has lived in the district over 30 days to register. A Public Information Meeting has been scheduled for Tuesday, March 29 at 7:30pm to go over the proposed budget and answer any questions. Annual Spring Egg Hunt At Belmont Lake State Park The New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation is pleased to announce that the 29th annual Spring Egg Hunt at Belmont Lake State Park will be held Saturday, April 9, 2022, from 12:00pm-2:00pm. There is no rain date for this event. The egg hunts will take place on the open field and will begin at 12:15pm. Additional hunts will occur at 15-minute intervals with the last one at 1:45pm. The hunts will be divided into three age categories: ages 4 & under; ages 5 & 6 and ages 7-9. There is a 3-egg limit per child per hunt to ensure everyone goes home with a special treat. Please bring a small bag or basket for your child to put their eggs in.

In addition to the egg hunt, there will be food vendors and free children’s activities including a petting zoo, pony rides, educational display by the Environmental Department, funny photos, and an inflatable bounce (weather permitting). You can also visit and take pictures with the Spring Bunny. YES Community Counseling Center has been providing both addiction treatment and prevention services for the past three decades with the understanding that the needs of each individual is uniquely different and therefore, treatment must also be individualized and utilize a variety of approaches.

YES Community Counseling Center’s addiction treatment services are comprehensive and approaches are based upon the developmental stage and readiness of each individual. Under the supervision of the agency’s Medical Director, specializes in evidence based services which are available for adolescents, young adults, adults and family members, including: •Adolescent Family Program (AFP) •Young Adult groups •Impaired driver evaluations and treatment •Moral Reconation Therapy for those who are legally involved (MRT) •Recovery groups •Trauma focused therapies •Parent and significant other support groups •Educational groups

It is also understood that most often, family members are deeply affected by addiction and require support and well as an understanding the complexities of the disease and how to support a loved one through their recovery. Early education about addiction is critical along with early interventions that build individual, family and community protective factors to reduce the likelihood of young people resorting to substances to cope with life’s challenges. In light of marijuana legalization, it is so important that parents learn the detrimental effects of all substances on the developing brain. West Islip School District’s boys winter track team had a successful season as the athletes returned to indoor competition and postseason meets. This season, the team experienced immense progress, setting personal records week after week and striving to improve themselves while supporting and bolstering their teammates. In the post season, 11 Lions competed in the state qualifier meet, contesting the 55 meter

dash, 600 meter, 1000 meter, high jump, triple jump, pole vault, and the 4x200 meter and 4x400 meter relays. Athletes who made this meet had to be ranked in the top 12 or 18 in the county depending on the event. After a previous season competing in outdoor dual meets with no championship season, the Lions proved that they could contend with the best athletes in Suffolk County. Sophomore Rocco Carpinello finished

third overall in the triple jump. The 4x200 quartet of Nicholas Castellino, Marcello Mastrocco, Rocco Carpinello and Christopher Paulsen finished second in the county. Other representatives included John Boniberger, Moises Espinal, Gavin DeVito, Michael Edgley, Nicholas Galian, Paul Pillitteri and David Orehosky. Rocco Carpinello earned AllCounty honors in the triple jump, and John Boniberger earned Academic AllCounty honors in the 600.
