in the grant was chosen as they are displayed throughout the manor house, and have suffered deterioration over time. The prints were originally purchased and have been displayed since 1902 by Frederick Diodati Thompson, a former proprietor of Sagtikos Manor, to emphasize the importance of President George Washington and his overnight visit to Sagtikos Manor during his tour of Long Island in April 1790. The prints topics range from Mount Vernon and his family, the Revolutionary War and his final days at Mount Vernon. The conservation will reduce discoloration, repair tears and reframe the prints using existing antique glass. The prints will be back on display at the manor for future tours and also be available for special exhibitions. A unique jewel on the south shore of Long Island, Sagtikos Manor

Life, as we know it, doesn’t always go according to plan. Sometimes, the most carefully orchestrated days can go awry in the blink of an eye, through no fault of our own. How we react, and recover – or don’t, as the case may be – says a lot about our character, or lack thereof. The fact is, more days than not will fall into this category. Seldom do schedules run like clockwork; rare are there uninterrupted intervals of peace and tranquility. Life doesn’t stop for anyone, and you had best hang on for the ride. Speaking of rides, and unexpected detours if you will, I recently took my car – my six-year old “Celeste” – for her annual checkup at the dealership. Over three hours, and nearly $500, later, I left with new rear brakes, an oil change, assorted minor
maintenance and a clean bill of health – for now. One day later, a co-worker said, “Didn’t you just get your car serviced?” Um…yeah? “Brake light is out.” And here I was so excited to no longer have a monthly car payment to contend with. Sigh. Take a deep breath; it calms the mind… so they say. On that note, I am happy to report to many inquiring readers that I have found a new yoga studio at which to continue my practice; new locale, anyway – same teacher, same familiar faces, same positive vibes. It’s amazing what those 75 minutes can do for the soul, even after the most pressing of days. There is something truly healing about those inhales and exhales, even while the mind races through its endless loop of thoughts. We could all benefit from
slowing down the pace a bit, mentally and physically. What has rushing ever accomplished that more careful consideration and contemplation couldn’t have improved upon? Even my baby betta, Spud, seems to have realized this, as he purposefully swims to and fro in his tiny bowl, stopping every so often – about once every five minutes, on average – to carefully inspect the thermometer I recently installed. Maybe he can read? Even his eating habits are methodical, as he carefully chooses each crumb, gobbling them up in – I kid you not – size order. And here I thought I was a bit OCD. Like human, like pet. And with that, the clock has tolled on deadline. And so, In Step readers, I bid you a fond adieu. ‘Til next week. Make it a good one.

Riding the Wave In keeping with this year’s Pick a Reading Partner program theme of “Ride the Reading Wave,” West Islip’s Manetuck Elementary School collectively read more than 110,000 minutes outside of school throughout the three weeks of PARP. As
a result of their reading achievement, Principal Dawn Morrison agreed to participate in an ice bucket challenge at the end of the PARP closing assembly. In addition to taking part in activities that encouraged reading both in school and at home, the
students also wrote a book titled “The Adventures of Gnarley Dude,” with each class writing and illustrating one page of the book. The book was read to the students at the closing assembly, and then placed in Manetuck’s library media center.

The Healthy For Good movement is designed to inspire all Americans to live healthier lives and create lasting change. It focuses on the simple idea that making small changes today can create a difference for generations to come. So join the movement and move more with us throughout the month of April! Studies have suggested that moderate physical activity has many proven benefits for overall health, such as lowering blood pressure, increasing HDL, or “good”, cholesterol and controlling weight. All these changes help to reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease and stroke, the nation’s No. 1 and No. 5 killers. (the mesh) that is placed under the urethra to support it like a hammock. The purpose is to prevent the urethra from excess descent with the increased abdominal pressure. Mesh has been used successfully for a number of years internationally with approximately 80-90% satisfaction rates. Potential complications of mesh are well known. It needs to be thoroughly under the vaginal tissues so it does not erode into the vagina. Erosions have occurred even years after the placement of the sling. These problems are treatable. Women who suffer from embarrassing leakage need not suffer in silence. Great success and thousands of satisfied women have had their lives improved after surgical repair. The urge type incontinence refers to the inability to get to the toilet on time when the urge to void begins. There are many causes for this type of incontinence. It may vary from one incontinent episode a day to multiple accidents, daytime and nighttime frequency. The leakage tends to be of larger amounts as the bladder starts to empty despite trying to stop it. This type of leakage is not not treatable with surgery like the stress type. Decreasing the amount of coffee, tea, colas, alcohol and spicy food may help to some degree. Voiding more frequently, prior to the urge may prevent the accident. Medications are often used. The purpose of

Leakage of urine is not normal but is very common in women. In most cases the problem can be improved. There are a number of reasons why women may have problems with their bladder control but the two most prevalent types are stress incontinence and urge incontinence. Stress incontinence is when some loss of urine takes place at the same moment as the cough, laugh or exercise. It is related to the increased abdominal pressure which puts excess pressure on the bladder. It is common in women in the years after childbirth but may also be a problem for cigarette smokers, people with asthma and chronic constipation. It may also be hereditary. The repeated straining movement of the cough or pushing to have a bowel movement weakens the connective tissues. Treatment options include pelvic floor exercises to try and strengthen the muscles of the pelvic floor, biofeedback and surgery. When the leakage is substantial surgery is usually the best course of action. Surgery for stress incontinence has been greatly improved in the last few years with the development of slings. In the past, the surgery required abdominal incisions with a hospital stay and prolonged recovery. Today the procedures have become ambulatory with quick recovery and very good success rates. Library Budget Vote Set The West Islip Public Library Board of Trustees has proposed an operating budget of $3,838,335 for 2017-2018 which will be voted on by residents on Tuesday, April 4th, from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. at the Library. The Budget/ Annual Report issue of the library newsletter, The Source, has been mailed to the community with details concerning the budget and the April 4th vote. The proposed library budget recognizes both importance of maintaining the library as a valuable resource for the community and the challenges facing local taxpayers. It proposes a relatively small increase in the budget which provides the necessary funding to do what the West Islip community has come to expect from the library. Additional funding has been provided for electronic materials, particularly e-Books, and children’s programs and activities, as well as for health insurance and staff costs, while reducing funding for Retirement System contributions and utilities. It is estimated that the proposed library budget would cost the average district homeowner an additional $6.39 a year in library tax, or, put another way, an additional 53 cents per month. “The Library Board realizes that every cent of increase is of concern to the taxpayer” said Library Director Andrew Hamm, “but it is their hope that community members will balance that concern with an appreciation of the value they receive for themselves and their families from a vibrant and robust library”. Also on the ballot on April 4th is one full fiveyear position for Library Trustee, and one threeyear remainder of a vacant term. The candidate who garners the most votes will assume the five year term, and the next greatest vote getter will receive the three year term. The candidates on the ballot are Marilyn Gutierrez and Louise Sokolowski. All residents are encouraged to vote on Tuesday, April 4th.
