Long Island Reads is an Island-wide reading initiative intended to bring together readers from across the Island to discuss a book and participate in library-sponsored activities and events associated with it. The Charity of the Month for March is: Birthday Wishes!
Birthday Wishes is an organization whose mission is to provide birthday parties to children experiencing homelessness. There are unforunatelty 2,000 homeless children right here on Long Island, but thankfully Birthday Wishes works with 80 shelters/ transitional housing programs in Nassau and Suffolk counties to give more than 120 children a birthday celebration each month!

In preparation for Easter, the Walt Whitman Shops is offering an opportunity for local children to have fun and give back to charity during their annual Easter Egg Hunt. This event will take place on Sunday April 14th at 9am. Tickets are $5 per child and all proceeds will be donated to Birthday Wishes of Long Island. Over 10,000 eggs and toys will be spread out in a section of the mall for kids to find. Also, you can meet the Easter Bunny there as well!

They serve hot meals from 12-1PM Monday-Friday and they also prepare a take home bag for each of their guests, consisting of two sandwhiches, a drink and a snack. No one ever leaves their soup kitchen hungry. They serve an average of 110 people daily and they operate solely on donations. Their volunteers are extremely dedicated and hardworking people. Kidsday Class of the Week Jeanette Merola and Janet Renganeschi’s sixthgrade class at West Islip’s Udall Road Middle School was recently chosen as a Kidsday Class of the Week and were visited by Newsday representative Patrick Mullooly to prepare. Participating in this
children’s journalism program, the Udall students have been eagerly creating, researching and developing articles for publication at the end of July. With the use of student Chromebooks, they are implementing Google Docs to share information with each
other, collaborating on ideas and receiving feedback from their teachers before submitting their articles. “This is an exciting opportunity for the students to showcase their writing and research skills,” Renganeschi said.

Get Ready: Early Spring Landscaping Tips D uring the cold months of winter, many people stare longingly out of their window dreaming of spring and time spent outdoors.
