Educators supported their students in ways they had never imagined, schools and parents have recognized mental health is an essential part of overall health...mental health conditions are real, common and treatable. Youth experiencing mental health issues deserve support, compassion and care not stigma and shame. Research shows that the most important thing a child needs to be resilient is a stable committed relationship with a supportive adult. So what can parents do? Be a positive role model by taking care of your own mental and physical health. Show positive ways you deal with stress, refrain from unhealthy coping strategies, etc. Emotional Regulation. When you notice changes let your child know your concerns and be ready to support them. Seek professional help through your pediatrician if necessary. Manage youth time and activities online. Digital technology has promote both positive and negative experiences. The United States Surgeon General issued an advisory in December 2021, Protecting Youth Mental Health, which spoke to the unprecedented challenges our nation’s children and families face, compounded by the pandemic. Without surprise, the report highlights the growing prevalence of young people experiencing mental health issues and acknowledges risk factors that became more present as a result of COVID-19. COLLABORATION, CREATIVITY FOR WEST ISLIP VE STUDENTS - Mrs. Macrelli’s virtual enterprise class at West Islip High School recently made a business plan presentation to the virtual enterprise international committee of judges. The students collaborated and worked for weeks on the 25-slide presentation that discussed the scope of their virtual business, FotoFrames. FotoFrames is a virtual eyewear company that allows the user to take photographs from their glasses, snow goggles, sunglasses, etc. Students created the product, marketed it, and have been selling it in virtual trade shows throughout the year. “I’m so proud of my executive team and members of virtual enterprise this year,” said Mrs. Macrelli, business education teacher. “Their creativity and the hard work of presenting to the judges was impressive to say the least. The event brought many community members and Veterans together, making the First Annual Veterans Awareness Project an overwhelmingly success.

So many Veterans face such issues as PTSD, mental illness, homelessness and ongoing recovery. The Veterans Awareness Project was possible with the help of sponsors such as, Catholic Health Good Samaritan Hospital, Islip Arts Council, Kerzner Contracting Corp., Bay Shore Lions, Francis Beringer, Legislators Cilmi and Flotteron and Ken Nevor. The art exhibit featured local Veteran artists and the documentary welcomed home Bay Shore native and Veteran Frank Romeo. Legislator Flotteron

Legislator Flotteron Raises Awareness For Veteran Programs And Resources

Pillitteri Takes Home Three Awards

West Islip High School senior research student Paul Pillitteri shared the findings of his research as a finalist in the Long Island Science and Engineering Fair on March 8. He earned three awards – Grand Award Honorable Mention in Chemistry; the Office of Naval Research, Naval Science Award; and Ricoh Sustainable Development Award. Pillitteri has been working on his research “Compositional Analysis of Oyster Shells Using

Submicron Resolution X-Ray Spectroscopy” as part of the Student Partnerships for Advanced Research and Knowledge program through Brookhaven National Laboratory. He analyzed oyster shells from the 1600s, 1800s and modern day to determine heavy metals in the shells that may indicate water chemistry changes over the past centuries. Pillitteri’s research is ongoing at the National Synchrotron Light Source II

at BNL. He will be analyzing additional data from Tender Energy X-Ray Spectroscopy and X-Ray Powder Diffraction during the next few months to gain a larger picture of water chemistry through the lens of oyster shells. He will be presenting this research at the NSLS-II & CFN Joint Users Meeting in May, a meeting in which synchrotron radiation and nanoscale research scientists around the world share their work.

11th Annual All Kids Fair Has Many Exciting Activity Areas

Families across Long Island cannot wait for the All Kids Fair’s first in-person event since before Covid-19. The 11th annual All Kids Fair will be on Sunday, April 3, from 10-4:30, at Samanea New York Mall, formerly The Source Mall, at 1504 Old Country Road in Westbury. Since 2011, the All Kids Fair has been a fun day each April for kids and their families to spend time together and also learn about Long Island-based companies with services and products for them. There are many exciting reasons for families to attend this amazing event. The War On Ukraine And The Legacy Of World War II The Museum Of American Armor Will Field An Education Day For Long Island’s High School Students That Connects History To Headlines field tactics, and mock small arms in open woods reminiscent of World War II France. Lawrence Kadish, president and founder of the museum, said, “There has been a deliberate reduction in class time assigned to teaching history, and World War II in particular. As a result, many students have no context for what the world is seeing in Ukraine and how Putin is repeating Hitler’s playbook almost to the letter. We need to appreciate that today’s headlines were written by history and this program seeks to address that.” Gloria Sesso, the Armor Museum’s education coordinator and copresident of the Long Island Council for the Social Studies, explained, “This program creates an immersion program for

students that integrates classroom study guides with an extraordinary field experience. As the classroom returns to normal following COVID this program regains the ability to tell the story of World War II, its legacy,

and why the chilling scenes we are seeing in Ukraine are yet another chapter written by that conflict.” Dr. Libby O’Connell, History Channel Chief Historian Emeritus and Chairperson of the NYC World War I Centennial

The New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation is pleased to announce that “Fly Casting Clinics” and instructional courses will be offered at two Long Island State Parks. The Long Island Chapter of Trout Unlimited will be conducting two clinics on “Basic Fly Casting”, one on Saturday, April 2nd at Connetquot River State Park Preserve in Oakdale and one on Saturday, April 9th at Caleb Smith State Park Preserve in Smithtown. The clinics will be held rain or shine, from 10:00AM – 1:00PM, and are open to everyone 16 years and older. If you own fly fishing equipment, bring it with you, but it is not required to attend. Clinic topics will include basic casting instructions, equipment

needs and selection, conservation, and safety techniques. Reservations are required and accepted beginning two weeks prior to each clinic. There is no registration fee, however, there will be an $8.00 vehicle use fee in effect. The Long Island State Park Region also operates Nissequogue River Fly Fishing School at Caleb Smith State Park Preserve. The school offers a series of ongoing instructional classes for groups and individuals in basic to advance freshwater and saltwater fly fishing and casting techniques, stream entomology, and still water (pond) techniques.
