Protein Challenge

hree West Islip High School AP Biology students participated in the 2014 Protein Challenge at Stony Brook University. The students had to construct a model of the Ras protein, a protein found mutated in 30% of all cancers. They had to construct an additional model in front of the scientists using a sophisticated computer program known as JMOL, as well as take a written exam. They placed 9th out of 32 high schools.

In Search Of Sunsets By: Jamie Lynn Ryan There’s a saying that goes, “Life is not measured by the number of breaths we take, but by the moments that take our breath away.” The goal, as I see it, is to capture as many of these moments as possible and preserve them in your memory. For me, this process is only enhanced by my love of photography. Sure, there’s something to be said for stepping back and simply observing the events before you, minus the ever-present haze of technology and gadgets galore. However, I feel

that photos help to string together the missing pieces, forming a minidocumentary of sorts of each of our lives. One of my favorite pursuits has always been capturing the perfect sunrise or sunset, that moment when all the colors burst forth in a radiant display of supernatural glory. It is easy to miss the beauty which surrounds us on a daily basis, so caught up are we in our own virtual worlds. Around every corner, there are lines and angles and reflections of light, which produce some of the most

brilliant visuals. Flowers, butterflies, candid shots of people in their element… open your eyes and you will see photo opps everywhere. Add to that the magic of Photoshop and Instagram, and the possibilities for manipulation of an ordinary photo into a masterpiece are endless. Of course, snap a truly spectacular shot and there may be #nofilterneeded! As we gingerly take our first steps into the Spring season, take a deep breath, look around and allow yourself to be moved. And make sure you have your camera handy.

At Momentum at South Bay in East Islip, progress is everything, according to Administrator Frank Dano. “As health-care providers, we have to keep our energy focused on progress, on always moving forward,” said Dano. Momentum is primarily a short-term rehabilitation facility, with particular emphasis placed on cutting-edge rehab technology and protocols. Since the center’s opening, Dano and his team of rehab specialists have sought to create an environment in which residents feel compelled to aim high and set ambitious goals. Momentum’s large, open gymnasium is home to a number of advanced pieces of equipment, designed to accommodate a range of rehabilitative needs.

Photo Contest Entries are now being accepted for the Gurwin Jewish Nursing & Rehabilitation Center’s Annual Photo Contest. Now in its 21st year, the contest offers amateur photographers an opportunity to enter photographs in ten categories: Landscapes, Travel, People, Pets, Children, Wildlife, Nature, Still Life, Computer Manipulated and Student. A maximum of five entries

per photographer at $5 each will be accepted. Photographs will be judged by a panel of professional judges at the close of the contest, and winners will be chosen based on clarity, composition, subject matter and suitability for display at the Center. Winning photographers will be awarded various cash prizes at a reception held in June, and winning photos will be enlarged and

Last Sunday, as my family was gathering for spaghetti and meatballs, we received a phone call from my grandmother. She sounded noticeably different. We could tell that something was wrong because her voice was shaky, and she did not offer the usual pleasantries. After a few minutes of crying, she told us that her cat had passed away. She loved that cat for the twenty-something years that it was around, and during the last few days, she could sense that something was wrong. I anticipated that she would be inconsolable,

because she truly cared about her precious feline. We were devastated as well, until we got another call. It was my uncle. He had great news. His wife was pregnant and they were expecting a baby. We never expected him to have kids, even though he seemed to love them. It was a welcomed shock to us, and even more needed for my grandmother. She had lost a cat, but had also potentially gained a grandchild. It seemed as if this baby was coming to fill and exceed the gap left by the animal’s passing. Essentially, the point that I am trying to make

is that when everything seems to be going wrong, greatness fills the void. With every bad, comes some good. As was the case with my grandmother and her cat, new life is promising to replace the loss of a loved one. Even when it seems that everything is stacked against us, it is comforting to know that it will turn around. We can never dwell on the negative aspects of life, as around every corner is a surprise that has the potential to brighten our day. Life is a cycle of highs and lows, and we should always anticipate the next peak.

The Suffolk County Legislature has unanimously approved legislation to make discounted golf fees for veterans and active military personnel permanent. This resolution, sponsored by Deputy Presiding Officer Jay Schneiderman (I-Montauk), expands the pilot program which was set to expire on March 11th, 2014. In 2012, Legislator Schneiderman introduced legislation which established a pilot program to charge military veterans golfing fees equivalent to those paid by senior citizens. Since the implementation of this fee structure approximately 1,000 veterans or active military personnel have played a round of golf at Suffolk County courses. “Members of the military serve to protect the

freedoms of this country,” says Deputy Presiding Officer Jay Schneiderman. “This is one small way we can show our appreciation to the men and women of the armed forces.” “I support Deputy Presiding Officer Schneiderman’s legislation authorizing reduced fees for our veterans at county golf courses,” said Presiding Officer DuWayne Gregory. “The pilot program was a great success and many of our veterans took advantage of the reduced fees. I am in favor of anything we can do to support the veterans who protect our freedom every day.” Suffolk County Parks contains four golf courses which include Indian Island Golf Course in Riverhead, Bergen Point Golf Course in Babylon, Timber Point Golf Course

in Great River and the West Sayville Golf Course. Each golf course is open from mid-March through December and is staffed by a PGA professional, a driving range, a practice green and a full service restaurant and catering facility. This legislation now moves to Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone for his signature. Volunteer Recovery Program serve as the command center for rebuildingrelated activities by Long Island long term recovery groups, and will include a kitchen, warehouse, office spaces and meeting rooms. “Over the past year, the American Red Cross has repeatedly demonstrated its commitment to helping the most vulnerable on Long Island recover from the devastation of Superstorm Sandy,” said Gwen O’Shea, president/ CEO of the Health and Welfare Council of Long Island. “With its latest efforts, the Red Cross is also reaffirming its confidence in the nonprofit sector to harness the power of volunteers to assist storm survivors. The Long Island Long Term Recovery Group is grateful for their support of the Long Island Disaster Recovery Center, which will be the multiagency command center for voluntary agencies. It

will allow more groups to assist homeowners in their recovery.” Last spring, the Health & Welfare Council received a $1 million grant from the Red Cross to distribute through the Long Island Unmet Needs Roundtable. The Roundtable, which brings together a diverse group of philanthropic donors, offers financial assistance to help meet unmet needs for people affected by Sandy. John Miller, CEO, American Red Cross on Long Island, said: “This new grant builds on the strong partnership between the Health and Welfare Council of Long Island and the Red Cross and shows our ongoing commitment to help Sandy survivors recover and rebuild. The Disaster Recovery Center will be a great resource.” Local elected officials were also pleased about the collaboration between the

Red Cross and the Health and Welfare Council. Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone said: “The Red Cross has truly served Suffolk County residents prior to and in the aftermath of Superstorm Sandy. This funding initiative is yet another opportunity where the Red Cross continues to support recovery efforts on Long Island. Providing housing for the hundreds of volunteers who are still assisting residents is extremely crucial to the timeliness of repairs. I applaud John Miller, Gwen O’Shea, the American Red Cross, and the Health and Welfare Council for their continued commitment to the recovery efforts of Long Islanders.” Nassau County Executive Edward P. Mangano said: “I commend the Red Cross for donating the funds necessary for this Disaster Recovery Center. This facility will not only serve

as a command center, but will provide vital housing for 150 volunteers as they work to repair hundreds of Superstorm Sandy-damaged homes throughout our communities. The American Red Cross has awarded a $599,655 grant to the Health & Welfare Council of Long Island to support a disaster recovery center for nonprofits and volunteers who will help hundreds of homeowners affected by Superstorm Sandy repair their damaged homes. The funding will be used to house 150 volunteers at the new Long Island Disaster Recovery Center on the New York Institute of Technology campus in Central Islip. Without the grant, these volunteers would not be able to access housing while they work to repair 600 Sandy-damaged homes throughout Nassau and Suffolk Counties over the year to come. The funding will also be used to coordinate non-profit and volunteer efforts - such as mucking, gutting and debris removal - and operate the disaster recovery and housing facility. The center will
