Magnetic Test Kevin Osburn’s fourthgrade class at West Islip’s Oquenock Elementary School recently learned about magnetism, including how to make a magnet out of a nail.
Students also explored magnetic fields, north and south poles, a compass and interactions between two magnets, and testing the strength of five different types of magnets by seeing
how many paper clips each magnet could hold. They created a table to record their results and a graph in the school’s STEM lab.

‘Tis the time of year when all become Irish for a day, in the honorary sense anyway, and partake in the various St. Patrick’s Day celebrations held across Long Island and New York City. The funny thing is – well, perhaps more ironic than outright humorous – is that when my family and I traveled to Ireland several years ago, we were somewhat surprised to learn that those native to the Emerald Isle do not commemorate the occasion in even remotely the same manner as we do. In fact, the holiday takes on a far more religious tone, filled with pilgrimages to mountaintops to honor St. Patrick himself; a far cry from the drinking and parades which wind through most main streets on this side of the pond.
Speaking of Ireland, and travel, I certainly wish to do more of it, both here and abroad. Before our family trip, I had never been on a plane in my 30 years on this earth; nor, of course, had I bothered to apply for a passport. Old-fashioned road trips across the good old U.S. of A had never held much appeal due to my, shall we say, occasional tendency toward motion sickness during any car ride surpassing two or so hours. And so, at this point, my travels have extended ever so slightly north and south of New York, about halfway down the east coast – no further. And my passport, while it proudly sports that one stamp from Ireland, has remained packed away ever since. Unacceptable, I know. And with that, a new season is on the horizon, although whether Mother Nature will
cooperate remains to be seen. March has always been a notoriously fickle month, what with the remnants of winter storms to contend with, spring rains hovering overhead and blossoms waiting to burst forth from the trees. It is a time of beginnings, of growth, of shaking off the chill of the last several months to head out and feel the warmth of the sun as we explore the great outdoors. No need to pack a suitcase – just hop in the car and go, in any direction, and enjoy the beauty on this long island that we call home. So, as you head out in your green attire this week, take a deep breath of fresh air and start planning some fun activities to see you through to summer. Spring may be a gateway to the season of sun and surf and sand, but it is pretty spectacular in its own right. Enjoy it.

Thunderbirds to Headline Island. Also announced at the ICAS Convention is the return of the United States Army Golden Knights Parachute Team in the 2017 lineup. The United States Navy Blue Angels have also committed to headline the 2018 Bethpage Air Show at Jones Beach. This will be the eighth time the U.S. Navy Blue Angels have headlined the Bethpage Air Show at Jones Beach, one of the country’s largest and most prestigious air shows. “We are excited to welcome back the United States Air Force Thunderbirds to Long Island for their fifth headlining appearance at the Bethpage Air Show at Jones Beach,” said George Gorman, Deputy Regional Director, New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation. “Over 439,000 spectators chose the Bethpage Air Show as their Memorial Day holiday weekend destination in 2015 when the Thunderbirds last
visited. We are confident that their return to Long Island in 2017 will draw an equally large crowd as well,” said Linda Armyn, Senior Vice President of Corporate Affairs, Bethpage. Last year, the Bethpage Air Show at Jones Beach saw record breaking attendance when 453,000 people attended the show which included its biggest line up ever. During this show, for the first time, three jet teams performed including show headliners, the United States Navy Blue Angels, the Royal Canadian Air Force Snowbirds, and the Breitling Jet Team. The Thunderbirds were formed in 1953, and since have been charged with demonstrating the professionalism of Airmen and the capabilities of modern airpower. Their performance at the Bethpage Air Show will include approximately 40 maneuvers, featuring formation flying and solo routines.

Track Qualifiers West Islip High School girls indoor track team members Hanna Battaglini, Klaire Klemens and Sierra Koehler qualified for the 2017 New York State Indoor Track championship. Battaglini qualified in the 55-meter hurdles, while Klemens and Koehler qualified in the 1,500-meter run. The athletes’ qualifying times earned them All-
County honors, and they look forward to competing in the state championships. Meanwhile, the school’s boys 4x800 relay team – Desmond Benton, Greg Bove, Peter DeMicco and Andrew Lauriguet – took second place in the indoor state qualifier meet, running a season-best time of 8:19. Lauriguet will represent West Islip at the state meet in March after
running the fastest high hurdle time in Suffolk County. He also broke a 43-year-old school record by running the 55-meter hurdles in 7.70 seconds. He finished in 16th place at the Eastern States Indoor Championships on Feb. 28, held at the Armory Track & Field Center in New York City.

and working in the Town of Islip,” said Supervisor Carpenter. Supervisor Carpenter touted the Town’s strong financial position, noting the Aaa rating from Moody’s, and stressed that now is the time to invest in critical infrastructure improvements in the Town. Such projects would help residents and businesses alike, and save taxpayer dollars in the long-term. These improvements will also create economic opportunities for local businesses and provide additional streams of revenue for the Town. Atop the list of improvements to Town facilities is the revitalization of Roberto Clemente Park in Brentwood. Supervisor Carpenter’s administration has overseen the removal of all contaminated material, and has started restoring the park so that it may once again be the cornerstone
of the Brentwood community. The Town, with the assistance of a $2 million grant secured by NYS Assemblyman Phil Ramos, plans to enhance the features of the park to include a Spray Park, and create a space for local families that rivals any local park in Suffolk County. While committed to improving our parks, Supervisor Carpenter’s administration has also been alleviating troubling developments in residential neighborhoods. The Town’s Division of Code Enforcement has overseen the demolition of many blighted properties that not only de-value surrounding properties, but pose a direct threat to public safety. The Town plans to increase enforcement procedures against these derelict parcels, all at the expense of the neglectful property owners. The final portion of the speech focused on harnessing the Town’s existing resources to create economic opportunity for Islip residents. To that end, Supervisor Carpenter’s administration will continue to promote and support Islip MacArthur Airport, which recently received the news that the Governor was putting $20 million in the budget to address connectivity between the LIRR and the airport terminal. Supervisor Carpenter also highlighted the work of the Islip Industrial Development Agency, which has enabled companies to retain and create close to 5,000 thousand jobs locally. The number of active projects handled at Islip’s IDA over the past two years has surpassed any previous two-year period in its 42year history. “We remain steadfast in our belief that Islip Town is one of the best places in the state to live, work, and raise a family,” said Supervisor Carpenter. “I promise our residents that with every hour, we will work to make Town government more responsive to the needs of our residents, and to create a better future for Islip’s families.”

In celebration of Black History Month, fifthgraders in teacher Jill Culver’s class at West Islip’s Oquenock Elementary School recently painted full-face acrylic portraits of their black history heroes. Students prepared by researching many role models, chose someone they admired and then
located a photograph of the person. During several lessons, the young artists learned to accurately shape and place facial features, and use different techniques to style the subjects’ hair. At the end of the four-week project the fifth-graders explained why they admire the person they selected and painted.

“It’s always exciting when the students can relate to a person from history or feel empathy or compassion for someone, and are eager to learn more about them,” said Culver. “It is also a great opportunity to learn how to paint a portrait in acrylics.”

Suffolk diver to win five county titles. As a junior last year, he earned his first state title and fourth county title. He will defend his state championship title on March 4 at the NYSPHSAA championship held at the Nassau Aquatic Center in Eisenhower Park. Earlier, Carter and fellow diver Adriane Casey had put on an impressive display of skill and athleticism at the Suffolk County league diving championships, also at Hauppauge. Casey finished in fourth place and Carter won the league championship for the fifth year in a row. West Islip swimmer Nicos Prokopiou broke four school swimming records this past season and won four medals in the Suffolk County league swimming championships at Hauppauge, including
