The Long Island Real Estate Group recently gave a $25,000 donation to Adults and Children with Learning and Developmental Disabilities, Inc. (ACLD) to allow for a dental suite to be named for LIREG in The Charles Evans Health Services Center. Dentistry is a challenge

for many individuals with autism and developmental disabilities. ACLD’s Health Services utilizes a desensitization program to help individuals reduce anxiety about going to the dentist. The program allows for this population to improve their dental health, which is essential to their overall well-being.

Waving Goodbye To Winter

As we wave goodbye to winter, it is easy to forget that there are people out there without a home, food or even shoes. The homeless are at an exponential disadvantage when it comes to adverse weather. We often complain about the trials of winter, but do we really have it so bad? Just having a house to go back to at the end of the day is an asset that we all take for granted. Many people don’t have heat. There is no relief at the end of an afternoon commute. Sure, they have no driveway to shovel, but they also

end up sleeping on the streets in the middle of a snowstorm. A few weeks ago, I took part in a Midnight Run. We went to the city and gave out bags of clothes to those who needed them the most. They were eternally grateful for our contributions. One man even tried to give us a thank you gift. Despite the fact that they have so little, the homeless people that we met proved to be some of the most generous. Even though some people regard them as “bums,” the homeless are fighting an uphill battle each and every

day. If one thinks living on minimum wage is tough, try surviving on change. Although I have no firsthand experience in the realm of the homeless, I can imagine just how hard it may be. People can be intolerant of the homeless. They wave them away when all they ask for is change. There is no daily salvation for this group of people that are trying so dearly just to make it. Before you curse the weather while waiting for your car to heat up, remember the men and women who are sleeping in the snow.

Kick-Off Fundraiser on Thursday, March 20th, at Lombardi’s on the Sound in Port Jefferson. Established in 1998, Ride for Life is a 150-mile wheelchair and scooter ride from Montauk to Manhattan to benefit those affected by ALS, also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease, a progressive neurodegenerative disease that affects nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord. Each year, Ride for Life, led by patient and advocate Chris Pendergast, has stopped at SJC on its trek across Long Island where the College’s Recreation Club has provided the riders with lunch and, in certain instances, monetary donations. “I am humbled and honored to receive this award recognizing SJC’s support of Ride for Life,” said Dr. Lamberta. “I was introduced to Chris Pendergast through a dear friend more than 20 years ago and have always admired his dedication, commitment and courage. Chris is a remarkable human being and has touched so many lives throughout his journey as an educator and with Ride for Life.” This year’s Ride for Life event will begin on Monday, May 5th, with a brief stop on the way at SJC’s Long Island Campus on Wednesday, May 7th. The Suffolk County Community College Board of Trustees and College administration commended the Michael J. Grant Campus’ Speech and Debate team for taking home a collective seven trophies at the 2014 New England Forensics Championship at Suffolk University in Boston on February 8th. Several team members will now compete in the national championships later this spring. “The Suffolk County Community College Board of Trustees congratulates the Speech and Debate Team. The team’s skill and ultimate placement at the 2014 New England

Forensics Championship will now see several team members advance to the National Championships in Michigan. We are exceptionally proud of our students, staff and this notable achievement,” said Dafny J. Irizarry, Chairperson of the Suffolk County Community College Board of Trustees in presenting an award from the Board of Trustees to the DebateTeam at the board’s monthly meeting on February 20th. Professor and faculty advisor Christopher Holfester was also commended for his dedication and 15 years of work with Suffolk’s debate teams.

The Suffolk Community College Grant Campus Speech and Debate Team has earned a trip to the national championships nearly every year since 1999. The team can boast to having three individual National Championships and two New York State team championships. Suffolk’s team is the only community college to ever win the New York State Team Championship in the 59 year history of the event and won in consecutive years, 2002 and 2003. Team alumni include seven practicing attorneys and four professors, two of whom teach at Suffolk County Community College.

With a donation of $5,000 from Northeast Structural Steel, Inc., coupled with sweat, determination, and hard work from staff members at Eastern Suffolk BOCES (ESBOCES), the school library at Masera Learning Center (MLC) in West Islip was transformed from being nonfunctional and unusable to being a vibrant, functional, purposeful room, specifically designed for students on the autism spectrum. On February 11th, a ribbon-cutting ceremony took place and the students were introduced to their newly-renovated library. ESBOCES Teacher Assistant Lisa Blandeburgo has worked at MLC for 12 years. She said, “The students deserve a nice, functional library. It was looking very sad.” Lisa’s husband works at

Northeast Structural Steel and knew the company to be big-hearted and altruistic. Northeast Structural Steel President Danielle Define generously approved the donation of $5,000 to the Applied Behavior Analysis-Parent Teacher Organization at MLC. MLC Assistant Principal Kristyn Kealey was instrumental in getting an eleven-member committee and custodians to help with renovations. The renovations included new floor tiles, rugs, paint and art on the walls; games, puzzles, a Lego table, a train set, a dollhouse, puzzle- shaped ottomans, and most importantly, four centers designed specifically for the MLC autistic population.
