Bellina’s Pizza & Restaurant, located at 22 East Main Street in East Islip, was recently welcomed to the community on November 1st of last year. Owned and operated by co-owners Haki Mucaji and his brother-in-law Mati Shatri, this establishment was immediately seen as a
great addition to the other Main Street businesses. Along with serving delicious pizza, pasta, heroes and other specialties, Bellina’s has a policy of serving those in need in the surrounding neighborhood. A sign at the front door notes that anyone who is hungry and unable to pay will be fed for free. As Mucaji, a native of the former Yugoslavia, reminisced, “My father always said - do good and it will come back to you.” Mucaji says he brought this policy over from a former business in Bay
Shore, La Casa Pizza, where he used to work. “When I came here,” he explained, “we put the sign out. I told my employees to treat them just like paying customers.” Partner Shatri agrees, “We’re doing small things with a great heart.” The response from the community has been extremely welcoming. HOPE CHILDREN’S FUND
Hope Children’s Fund is an international non-profit that operates with the motto “Education Is Key.” For children in Kenya, this couldn’t be more true. Without an education and the ability to speak English, these children often lack the opportunity to rise above fetching water and cutting wood. Kevin Mann, Vice President of Hope Children’s Fund, explained, “The government in Kenya doesn’t have the resources to take care of the children in their country like the United States government does.” It is not shocking to see a very young child in Kenya hopelessly wandering the streets without family...hungry and just trying to survive. Hope Children’s Fund does something about this problem. In 2001, Hope Children’s Fund registered as a nonprofit and raised $40,000 through donations – precisely enough money to begin construction on an orphanage that stands high up on a hill in Meru, Kenya. By 2005, the orphanage opened and began transforming lives for children, many of whom had lost their parents in the AIDS epidemic. This orphanage, Jerusha Mwiraria Hope Children’s Fund Home, has a dining hall and a dormitory for boys and girls. It provides the children with shelter, steady meals and the opportunity to attend school. The children are shown family values and given chores to complete in order for them to gain life skills. They currently house 100 children and have had many success stories. If you would like to be part of another one of their success stories, you can! There are 22 orphans who still need to be sponsored through Hope Children’s Fund’s sponsorship program - $1/day or $365/year will help send these children to school so they have a better chance
to succeed. Below, you will see a photo of Ian Mugambi, a 12 year-old boy in need of a sponsor. Ian lost his mother and sister and currently resides at this orphanage in Meru. Educational Research As part of Brookhaven National Laboratory’s Educational Outreach Program, students in school districts across Long Island – including West Islip High School’s Madison Esposito and Aidan Pecorale – conducted collaborative research on micrometeorites with Brookhaven lead scientists Paul Northrup, Aleida Perez, Vivian Stojanoff and Juergen Thieme. Students collected potential micrometeorite samples and analyzed them using two beamlines – the Submicron Resolution X-ray Spectroscopy, or SRX, and TenderEnergy X-ray Absorption Spectroscopy, or TES – at
Brookhaven’s National Synchrotron Light Source II. These instruments are focused on x-ray absorption and x-ray fluorescence, imaging and spectroscopy. The SRX beamline was utilized to generate maps depicting heavy elemental distribution, while the TES beamline was used to identify light elemental distribution within each sample. The students later presented a poster of some of their preliminary findings at the Synchrotron Environmental Science Symposium, hosted by Brookhaven National Laboratory. Esposito and Pecorale were officially among the co-authors
of a resulting article, “X-ray Fluorescence and Absorption Analysis of Micrometeorite Composition,” recently published in “Meteor Trails,” a journal of the American Meteor Society. “Our students are getting the opportunity to use instruments and techniques that many scientists work their whole careers to use for this purpose,” said Brian Taylor, West Islip’s director of science and engineering technology. “Thanks to our science teacher Mary Kroll and her tireless efforts in creating partnerships such as these with the worldclass research institutions here on Long Island.”

St John the Baptist Diocesan High School’s (SJB) Dance Company performed at the Performing Arts Educators 12th annual Invitational at Carnegie Hall.
