A total of 13 of West Islip’s accomplished young studentmusicians recently attended the Suffolk County Music Educators Association’s 15th annual Day of Horn. During the event, held at Northport High School, they participated in rehearsals, clinics performances and a massed horn ensemble featuring hundreds of students. Chosen for the Day of Horn were Bayview Elementary School fifth graders Delaney Bartling and Riley Shoemaker; Paul J. Bellew Elementary School fifth graders Timothy Archacki, Luke Howard and William Schwarz; Oquenock Elementary School fifth grader Savannah Walsh; Beach Street Middle School grade 6-8 students April Allegretto, Alyssa Corso, Caitlin Fallon, Jillian Orfano and Francesca Tofano; and West Islip High School students Drake Castonguay and Sophia Randazzo. They were accompanied by teacher Victoria Kavitt, the band director for Bayview and Bellew, and Avery Yurman, Oquenock’s band director.
Girls on the Run is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization. They run a physical activity-based positive youth development program that is designed to enhance girls’ social, psychological and physical skills and behaviors to help them successfully navigate life experiences.
They serve girls in grades 3-5 and inspire them to be joyful, healthy and confident by using a fun, interactive curriculum, which creatively integrates running! Meeting twice a week in small teams for a 10-week season, a volunteer coach will teach girls life skills through engaging lessons and fun movement activities. At each season’s conclusion, all girls from teams across Long Island will meet up for a celebratory 5K running event. This year’s 5K event is scheduled for Saturday, June 6 at Hofstra University, where over 1000 individuals will run, volunteer or spectate to celebrate! Their upcoming spring season will begin the week of March 16th and is shaping up to be their largest season yet! This organization truly makes a difference! See the results from those who have participated:

SJB RECEIVES NY BLOOD CENTER AWARD - New York Blood Center recognized St. John the Baptist as a "Heroglobin" Award Recipient. The award was given to SJB after 227 adults donated blood during their 2018-2019 blood drives. These 227 donations saved over 600 lives. WINNING WINTER TRACK TEAM - West Islip High School’s varsity boys winter track team recently competed in the large school county championship, with many student-athletes displaying outstanding performances and breaking personal and school records. Senior Andrew Paules ran a personal best in the 3,200-meter with a time of 9:54.46, earning him third place in the county. Senior teammate Ty Carpinello broke his own previous school record in the triple jump with a distance of 43 feet, six inches, winning him the county title. KNIGHTS OF COLUMBUS FREE THROW COMPETITION - Our Lady of Lourdes Council No. 17379 in West Islip recently held their first, hopefully annual Knights of Columbus Free Throw Competition. The contest was held on Thursday, January 30th at our Lady of Lourdes Parish Center in West Islip. Three participants will move up to the District Level on February 15th at Ss. Cyril & Methodius Parish in Deer Park where they will compete against the winners of each age group from the other councils in the 8th New York District. Our Lady of Lourdes Council is a newly formed council and the officers of the council were glad to get involved in their first council free throw competition.
