I ended last week’s column LEARNING THE BASICS - Islip Town Councilman Steve Flotteron recently visited with Cub Scouts from Troop 279 of West Islip, and spoke to them about the role of hoping that this month of local government. of sorting through and cataloging the boxes upon boxes of albums, envelopes full of developed photos and a few dozen or so frames and collages. Several months later, I’ve barely made a dent in the process. But it doesn’t matter. There’s no rush where memories are concerned. They should be carefully recollected, and savored. Every single photograph tells a story; and every story unlocks a treasure trove of feelings and emotions – some happy, some sad, some wistful… all meaningful in their own respective ways. And winter, while it may not bring a lot of sunshine into our lives, is the perfect time to take a moment to appreciate all the memories that do.

of our lives… While this is a nice sentiment, of course we know that life does not always work this way, and there are plenty of storm clouds to weather along the way. This just reinforces the notion that we must all take the time to appreciate the little things in life, the special moments, those people we love and the many memories we share, as we simply never know when they will become precisely that… just a faded memory among many others. After the passing of my grandfather nearly a year ago, and the subsequent sale of the
house that my grandparents had called home for more than 50 years, there was obviously much cleaning out and sorting through mementos to be done. In some ways, this was the most difficult task of all. To me, nearly everything held some sort of significance, some deep emotional attachment which evoked so many precious recollections of years gone by. Of course, these are just objects, material possessions which hardly make up for the loss of the person they are associated with. But the photographs… those are truly special. And boy, are there photographs. I, being of the slightly OCD nature, coupled with my fervent love of all things photography, volunteered to take on the initial task

The rain on my window awakes me in the morning. The scars from the thunder are left on the sky. I lie in bed for most of the morning. For the day to begin for the sun to arrive.
Motivational speaker Marc Mero, a former pro wrestler and the author of “How to Be the Happiest Person on the Planet,” recently presented his “Champion of Choices” program to the students of West Islip’s Udall Road Middle School. During his talk, Mero
discussed how he reached the pinnacle of sports entertainment success as WWE wrestling champion, then lost it all, and in the process, discovered what is most important in life. “Marc now has a greater appreciation for his relationships with people and empowers others
to make a difference in their personal life, school and community,” said Udall Principal Daniel Marquardt. “He encouraged our students to keep dreaming and set goals to achieve their dreams.”

Artisan woodworker Michael Braceland’s eclectic mix of woodwork, mixed media and found objects is on display this month in the Gallery of West Islip Public Library. Prominent in the exhibit are works that combine the textures and organic shapes of natural wood combined with various mixed media sometimes featuring a kinetic aspect of motion. Michael began his journey as artist as a child growing up in the 70s in Islandia, Long Island. Early on he would spend time at a neighbor’s house learning techniques like macrame and decoupage with his friend’s mom. Crafting with his hands, was something he discovered he liked to do. On a trip to the Guggenheim with his mom, he was entranced by mobiles made by the artist Alexander Calder. He found himself attracted to pop art, modem art, optical illusion, mobiles and kinetic art. Michael’s journey and love of craft led him to become a carpenter, a trade
