Vrooommm! The sound of the car engine was all I could hear. I just got back from the eye doctor. Not good. I knew that someday I would get them, but now? I was only 3 years-old. I looked at my mom and brother. They were talking, but I could not hear them. My brother might have been thinking, “Now I have this loser brother with glasses.” I bet he would have said something but my mom would not let him. She simply wouldn’t. Then my mom took her phone out of her pocket and gave it to my brother. I saw him scroll down until the contact for my dad came up. I was starting to hear now, but faintly. My brother hit the “speaker” button on her phone. “Guess who is going to look even more handsome?” My dad guessed me on the first try. About five more minutes passed, and we were rolling down a “one-

way” parking lot entrance. I saw these menacing looking penguins out of the few inches of window space I had because I was so short. They were staring me down, those ugly penguins. I thought how silly I was to think those penguins are menacing. I thought how my eyes might be acting up or maybe the tinted window might be doing it. I looked up from the seemingly menacing penguins up to the name of the shop. It was called the Eyeglass House. Then we found a spot in the deserted parking lot. When I walked into the store, it was a room where I half expected there to be gas coming out of the wall like a torture chamber. It was a 6’x6’ room with a hat rack and a 2’x4’ bench. There was another door in front of me. I walked through the door, touching a dry, old, rusty doorknob. I looked to the left and saw two desks and at least 100 pairs

of glasses. I saw a bunch of chairs with a life-sized Mickey Mouse. I took a seat… “Slay-terry?” an old woman croaked. My mom, Aidan and I stood up and walked over. The old woman had bright purple glasses and nasty, old, ugly, horribly crooked teeth that reminded me of a beaver’s. She picked out three pairs and I disliked all of them. We tried on a green pair that I looked stupid in, a red pair that I liked the best, and heavy, vomit-worthy blue ones that had holes in the rims that kept the glasses on my face. The holes must have been there to catch a new fashion trend, but the only thing it was catching was strands of my hair. “I like these!” the nasty lady and Mom said. Moments after, we walked out with me wearing the blue glasses. I guess all stories don’t have happy endings.

By: Jamie Lynn Ryan Hope: A feeling of expectation and desire for a particular thing to happen. And so it begins. February, the month of anticipation, from furry groundhogs predicting the forecast to expressions of love and affection come Valentine’s Day. Is there anyone who isn’t even the slightest bit glad to bid January farewell? Apologies, once again, to anyone with birthdays, anniversaries and other notable milestones during this first month of the new year, the symbolic representation of all things new and fresh. With the possible exception of the few moments of New Year’s Eve celebrations which spilled over into the next morning, I have to

say that, for me, 2016 is severely lacking in positive spin. Sure, winter has spared us its wrath for the most part…save for one tiny twofoot helping of the white stuff. Still, the bitter cold and gray, overcast skies leave something to be desired. There is only so much hibernating and vegetating one can realistically do. (Netﬂix, anyone?) But here we are, turning the page – on the calendar and hopefully on life – as month two begins, providing us with yet another blank canvas to fill. Here’s to getting back to doing those things which make us happy, to not allowing the negativity of other individuals and situations dictate our moods, to rising above the monotony in search of fulfillment.

Here’s to hoping that February provides the perfect precursor to spring, and all the beauty and wonderment it brings. Plus, we have an extra day to take advantage of this year, a bonus opportunity if ever there was one. Now all we have to do is make use of it, and of all those clichéd philosophies we want so badly to believe in. Whatever it is you are hoping for, may you have the courage to go after it. Good things come to those who wait; but a pointed step in the right direction surely doesn’t hurt. Here’s to February, to frosted windowpanes and picturesque winter sunsets and the beginnings of revitalization. Oh, and of course Buddy the Betta’s 1st birthday. Priorities humans, priorities.

Three Farmingdale State College students are heading to Albany this spring, to intern at the offices of the State Senate and Assembly. Senior Ryan Reynolds of Oyster Bay, junior Kris Cutrone of West Islip, and senior Dareiny Norman of the Dominican Republic will have packed schedules but the rewards will be great, including 15 college credits earned, valuable career-oriented experience, and a generous stipend. The students will have an unparalleled opportunity to observe government in action and learn how legislatures operate. Reynolds will intern with Senator Tom O’Mara, 58th Senate District; Cutrone will work with Assemblyman Chad Lupinacci, Assembly

District 10. Norman has been assigned to the Assembly. The group’s duties will be varied, and include research; responding to constituent correspondence; tracking legislation; preparing bill memos; attending and reporting on committee meetings and public hearings; and meeting with lobbyists and specialinterest groups. Reynolds is a Chaminade High School graduate, and a Science, Technology & Society major at Farmingdale. Prior to enrolling at Farmingdale he studied engineering at Villanova University, where he became a member of Engineers without Borders and did volunteer work in the Philippines. He also has performed community

service in Philadelphia, at soup kitchens, community centers, and day care. Cutrone, a graduate of West Islip High School where he was a member of the National Honor Society, is a business management major and member of the Dean’s List at Farmingdale. His community activities include work with the West Islip Beautification Society and the American Heart Association. Norman is working toward a bachelor’s degree in aviation administration. She already has experience in the field, having worked as a customer service representative at Nantucket Memorial Airport, in Massachusetts. At Farmingdale she tutors fellow students in mathematics.

Artists Visit Heckscher West Islip High School students from Linda Marino’s and Annette Musteric’s art classes recently visited the Heckscher Museum of Art in Huntington to participate in the “Long Island’s Best: Young Artists at the Heckscher Museum” program. The prestigious arts-in-

education initiative is the only juried exhibition on Long Island that offers high school students the opportunity to exhibit their art in a museum setting. Long Island’s Best encourages students to be inspired by works on display at the museum, using the experience to create their

own original works of art. Approximately 80 artworks in various media will be selected, and prizes will be awarded at a reception this spring. West Islip can boast several previous Long Island’s Best winners, including “best in show.”
