Hospitals Intensify Flu Prevention Efforts
Flu Shots And Surgical Facemasks Part Of Effort To Stem Flu Flu virus was declared prevalent by the New York State Health Commissioner on December 6, 2023, and hospitals on Long Island and throughout the Hudson Valley are taking additional steps to prevent the spread of flu, including enhanced efforts to vaccinate all employees and distribution of surgical facemasks. Worn by employees, masks offer a physical barrier to flu transmission. This is a comprehensive endeavor to protect patients,
visitors, and employees from exposure to the flu virus. A declaration of flu prevalence by the health commissioner triggers the public health law that was put in place by the state in 2014. Employees of hospitals and residential healthcare facilities and agencies who are not vaccinated against the flu are required to wear a mask while in areas where patients or residents are typically present. While an annual flu vaccine remains the
single best method for preventing the flu, a surgical facemask, worn by employees, provides added protection to patients, employees, and visitors. All hospitals on Long Island and in the Hudson Valley offer the flu vaccine to all employees and also provide employees with surgical facemasks, as required by New York State public health law. As a matter of standard practice, all Long Island and Hudson Valley hospitals enforce
universally recognized precautions to prevent the flu. These include hand washing, the use of hand sanitizers placed conveniently throughout the hospital, as well as goggles and gowns. In addition, all hospitals adhere to rigorous infection control guidelines and policies every day to ensure a clean environment for patients, staff, and visitors. These practices are especially important during flu season. Antiseptic wipes are
located in patient rooms, workstations, hallways, and other treatment areas and are easily accessible to hospital employees responsible for sanitizing medical equipment and surface areas. “Flu prevention is a priority at all hospitals on Long Island and in the Hudson Valley. Hospital employees work every day to lessen the spread of flu virus by adhering to strict infection control practices and prevention guidelines,” said Wendy Darwell, president/CEO
of the Suburban Hospital Alliance of New York State, the organization that represents hospitals in the nine counties east and north of New York City. “Hospitals, nursing homes, and other facilities must also document the number and percentage of personnel vaccinated against the flu to state and federal authorities.” Most hospitals offer flu shot clinics. Suffolk County Office for the Aging Winter 2024 Senior Advocate Schedule. Manetuck Students Connect With Community Helpers
Manetuck Elementary School in the West Islip Union Free School District’s shared decision team hosted a Community Helper Day on Jan. 18. All grade levels visited with the different tables stationed throughout the room. Members of the West Islip Fire Department, Suffolk County police officers from the Third Precinct and a
local sheriff spoke with the students about their career paths, how they help the community and offered tips for staying safe in an emergency. Former and current Manetuck parents also assisted in sharing their careers with the students. Ariana Pareti and Christine Elefante spoke to students about what it’s like to be a
radiologic technician and a respiratory therapist. Jeffrey Regan shared some of the many STEM career options and talked about his work in the aerospace industry. Manetuck teacher assistant Patti Love demonstrated Irish step dancing for the students, while parent Alison Ryczek Weir demonstrated the art of pottery making.

Business Students Compete At Virtual Enterprise Show

On Jan. 9, 36 West Islip High School business education students participated in the Virtual Enterprise Regional Trade Show and Business Plan Competition at LIU/Post. The event brings together more than 2,400 students, educators and business
leaders from across Long Island. West Islip High School students were accompanied by virtual enterprise teacher Patricia Morgigno and business education teacher Frank Franzone. West Islip virtual enterprise firms in attendance included
ViBrace, Midnight Cupcakes and EZ-Gym. The students participated in a live, interactive tradeshow and competed for best business plan, best sales pitch, best exhibit booth and more. The annual event draws Long Island students
who create and manage simulated businesses with their virtual enterprise classmates. Midnight Cupcakes was awarded gold in the Sales Pitch Competition, silver in the Sales Material Competition, and silver in the Website Competition.
The West Islip High School student executive management teams also presented their written corporate business plan to a panel of judges during the first round of the Business Plan competition. In total, 40 student businesses from across the country will
be chosen to advance to the second round of the competition. In April, West Islip High School firms are scheduled to attend the VE International Trade Show at the Jacob Javits Center, which brings together 5,000 students from 18 states and nine countries.

average of 80 percent higher than his or her first purchase. In addition, a survey from the strategic planning, marketing and sales consultants Altfeld, Inc. found that the probability of selling to an existing customer is between 60 and 70 percent, while that probability shrinks to as
low as 5 percent for new customers. Customer retention strategies like offering superior customer service and seeking input from customers can help small businesses generate more repeat customers, which can greatly improve their chances for long-term success.
