Islip Town Councilman John Cochrane, Jr., wishes to remind local veterans of the many services that the Town of Islip can provide to those who have served our country. Councilman Cochrane - a Navy veteran has spearheaded the Town’s efforts to better serve those who have protected our nation. One of the latest programs is the PFC Joseph R. Dwyer Project, a PTSD support service group aimed at helping veterans cope with Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). The program, which began in 2015, has met with success and praise by the veteran community. “PTSD impacts many veterans returning from overseas deployments and can have a serious and detrimental effect on their lives,” said Councilman Cochrane. “This is a unique program that can make a real difference and provide support to those who have sacrificed so much.” The PFC Joseph R. Forms can also be obtained by visiting the Councilman’s office at 655 Main Street, Islip, first floor, west wing. Obtaining Important Documents – Any veterans,
or family members of veterans, hoping to access military benefits must have their service records in order and readily available. The most important of these documents is their DD214/ Honorable Discharge papers. If any veteran or family member of a veteran is having trouble obtaining this document, contact Councilman Cochrane’s office at 631.224.5559. Councilman Cochrane also strongly encourages veterans to register their
DD214 with the Suffolk County Clerk to ensure that a backup document is on file. Recognition for Cold War Service – Veterans who wish to receive a Cold War Recognition Certificate can visit Councilman Cochrane’s office (655 Main Street, Islip) to fill out the application form. To be eligible, an applicant must have been a veteran serving at least one day during the Cold War era, (September 2nd, 1945 to December,
1991) and did not receive a less than honorable discharge. Councilman Cochrane’s office will assist any veteran with obtaining a copy of their DD214 for proof of service. Just bring any military information you have to the Councilman’s office at 655 Main Street, Islip. project, John chose to organize a blood drive which took place in January of 2015. The month of January was chosen due to its being the time of year at which blood banks tend to experience critical shortages. John’s hard work and determination led to a very successful drive which netted a total of 45 donations. “Countless lives were no doubt saved by John’s efforts,” said McCaffrey. “John is a role model for both young and old alike,
and our community is truly fortunate to have such a leader. When John completes his education, I certainly hope that he chooses to remain here in Suffolk County to continue his commitment to service.” Currently, John is a freshman in St. John’s University pharmacy program, and he was very happy to report that during his first semester, he achieved a 4.0 GPA. Based on his successes to date, John is sure to deliver more positive news in the very near future.

Build Season Begins The award-winning West Islip High School robotics team attended the kickoff of the For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology Robotics Competition at Stony Brook University on January 9th. The FIRST Robotics Competition is a national program that challenges teams of students and their mentors to design and build a robot in a six-week timeframe. The international competition has grown to more than 1,303 teams competing in 37 regional events. West Islip’s team will
attend the FIRST Regional Competition at Hofstra University on April 1st and 2nd, competing head-tohead against more than 50 high school teams on a special playing field with robots they have designed, built and programmed. The winner will move on to a district championship, vying to earn a spot at the FIRST USA Championship to be held April 27-30 in St. Louis, Missouri. In preparation for the competition, the 40-member West Islip robotics team will meet every weekday night and on Saturdays through
the intense build season, which runs through February 23rd. Operating under strict rules and with limited resources, and guided by volunteer mentors, students will design, build, program and determine a strategy for competition. In the process, they will learn machining, programming, electronics, safety and critical thinking. Moreover, students experience a real-world engineering process in creating a working device from their own design, on time, within specification and within budget.
ROBOT FUN - The students at Our Lady of Lady of Lourdes School in West Islip are learning the fundamentals of coding and programming as they interact with their “Dash” robot. This miniature robot, used in conjunction with a variety of apps on an iPad, teaches students as young as age three the basic building blocks of html. The apps are picture-based for prereaders, and involve exploring variables, conditionals and more for older students. This STEM activity encourages curiosity, creativity and confidence while enhancing logic and math skills. The kids at oLL School are learning while having fun!

Winter is coming. Winter is coming. So the humans have been saying for the last three months, and yet… only now, in the final week of January, have I gotten to witness firsthand this magical white stuff in action. And what a beauty it is, even from the confines of my tiny betta bowl. Swirling snowflakes, blowing through the air, piling up outside my window to the outside world… and my human, fervently shoveling out her electric blue car – what a fine color it is, I might add – as the wind whips across the parking lot. But still, the opportunity
to hibernate with my human for an entire weekend, to have her undivided attention while we relaxed together and watched Netflix on the couch – that was priceless. We just finished Season 1 of House of Cards and I’m already, excuse the pun, “hooked.” I must admit, I didn’t understand the obsession with scouring the stores for every last container of milk, carton of eggs and loaf of bread at first. But then I realized the horror of not being able to make French toast for an entire day, and I understood the magnitude of such a storm and the havoc it could wreak on the masses. Just the thought of a day without flakes was

Scout Discussion Suffolk County Legislator Tom Barraga along with veterans from the different military branches recently addressed the scouts of Troop 179 in West Islip on issues relative to the U. S. Constitution and the role of
elected officials at different levels of government. In a question and answer session the scouts wanted to know the role of elected officials, the problems they face and questions relative to the importance of the U.S. Constitution in their
official duties. Legislator Barraga was very pleased with how the scouts had prepared for the question and answer session and the quality of the questions asked.

Teens for Jeans The Town of Islip Youth Bureau and their youth service agency, Youth Enrichment Services, have once again joined forces with local school districts to collect jeans for the national “Teens for Jeans” Campaign. The Islip Youth Bureau is encouraging residents, community and school groups and businesses to support the Teens for Jeans campaign by donating new or used jeans in good condition (any size) at one of Islip’s local drop-off sites between January 29th and February 26th. In the middle of the game, the score is 28 to 30. Our team is losing by three points. When the game starts, our team gets the ball first. My teammate passes me the ball; the opponents are jumping on top of me. They smell like smelly socks, and you can hear the dribbling noise of the ball as it is bounced on the ground. I had to cross the opponents over, and then I was about to shoot from the three-point line. I felt the rough rubber material with a flick of my wrist. The ball was slowly rolling around the rim, acting like it didn’t want to go in.
