Broadway Comes to Babylon!

LYNN NOTTAGE’S INTIMATE APPAREL - EastLine Theatre in association with the Babylon Citizens Council on the Arts will present Intimate Apparel by Pulitzer Prize-winner Lynn Nottage this February at the BACCA Center in Lindenhurst’s downtown. EastLine Theatre is a nonprofit theatre company that BroadwayWorld calls ‘Long Island’s best kept secret’. EastLine aims to create theatre in unlikely spaces while re-examining the canon, exploring modern plays, and bringing original works to the attention of the community. In summer 2021, EastLine toured Long

Island parks with an acclaimed production of Romeo & Juliet. In recent years, EastLine has produced Prospero (Live), an original musical based on The Tempest; the Long Island premiere of Paula Vogel’s Indecent; the black comedy Hand to God; a newly-commissioned adaptation of Antigone; a sold-out run of Peter Shaffer’s Amadeus in a tiny blackbox space; and a production of Treasure Island that BroadwayWorld said was ‘bursting at the seams with imagination’. EastLine will return to the BACCA Center in August with the Long Island premiere of Sarah Ruhl’s In the Next Room, or the vibrator play.

SPINNING SCIENCE LESSON AT BAYVIEW - The fourth graders in Ms. Staak’s class at Bayview Elementary School in the West Islip School District are learning about energy as part of their recent science lesson. During a hands-on STEM lesson, the students took their knowledge of science and love of amusements parks and brought them together for a challenge. EastLine Theatre in association with the Babylon Citizens Council on the Arts will present Intimate Apparel by Pulitzer Prize-winner Lynn Nottage this February at the BACCA Center in Lindenhurst’s downtown. This tender period romance will begin performances just before Valentine’s Day. After recent engagements in Babylon village, EastLine Theatre will return to the town of Babylon with Intimate Apparel. Based on the real life of her greatgrandmother, Lynn Nottage’s play follows talented seamstress Esther and her dream for a better life in 1905 New York City. Although she sews intricate ladies’ undergarments for the affluent, she dreams of sewing her own wedding trousseau. Through her work she forms a delicate, if forbidden relationship with the Orthodox Jewish man who sells her fabric. Nottage felt compelled to tell the story because “I am interested in people living in the margins of society and I do have a mission to tell the stories of women of color, in particular. I feel we’ve been present throughout history, but our voices have been neglected.” In writing the play, Nottage set out to write something “something simple and gentle”. Performances will take place at the BACCA Center in Lindenhurst starting on February 12th and running through the 27th. Tickets are $25 for adults, $20 for seniors and students. PSEG Long Island is sharing tips for customers to save money and reduce their energy consumption every day of the year. National Cut Your Energy Costs Day was launched to encourage consumers to explore energy- saving opportunities. In the past eight years, since PSEG Long Island was established, business and residential customers throughout Long Island and the Rockaways have done just that. More than $380 million in rebates have been distributed to customers through PSEG Long Island’s energy efficiency programs. That’s a savings of more than 2.1

billion kilowatts of energy since 2014 – and enough electricity to power more than 270,000 homes for an entire year. These tips can help customers save money and energy any time of year: · Replace inefficient incandescent light bulbs with LED bulbs since, according to the U.S. Department of Energy, lighting accounts for about 15% of the electricity used in the home, and LEDs use approximately 75% less energy and last up to 25 times longer. · Reduce “phantom power” by using energy efficient power strips or unplugging electronic devices when

they’re not in use. Items plugged into outlets use electricity even when they’re turned off. · Use a programmable thermostat to automatically manage your home’s heating and cooling needs. ENERGY STAR estimates that properly used programmable thermostats can save about $180 a year. In addition, PSEG Long Island offers rebates on smart thermostats. · Lower your thermostat by just one degree to potentially reduce your heating bill up to 3%. Lowering it two degrees during the day and five to 10 degrees at night will save even more.

· Install timers and motion detectors to automatically manage indoor and outdoor lighting and help ensure lights are not on when they’re not needed. · Ceiling fans can be used to save energy in winter. Setting a fan to rotate clockwise on low pulls cool air toward the ceiling, pushing warm air down into a room. · Seal windows and doorframes with weather stripping or caulk, and remove or cover window air conditioners to help to prevent drafts that waste energy and money. · Install a high efficiency air source heat pump

(ASHP) to lower energy usage, save money and provide greater comfort in cold and hot months. Robust rebates are available from PSEG Long Island’s Home Comfort Program for ducted ASHP units, ducted geothermal heat pumps and ductless mini split systems.
