WREATHS ACROSS AMERICA DAY - Dozens of PSEG Long Island employees recently participated in the nationwide Wreaths Across America Day at both Calverton National Cemetery and Long Island National Cemetery at Pinelawn. PSEG Long Island also donated 500 wreaths to the Calverton site for the group to use at this event in years to come. Every year on a Saturday before Christmas, PSEG Long Island employees join hundreds of other volunteers laying wreaths on military gravesites. This takes place at more than 2,500 locations across all 50 states and many U.S. territories, including Long Island’s two national cemeteries, and on working military vessels. This annual campaign honors fallen service members by laying wreaths at their gravesites for the holidays.

BACCA Celebrates 50 Years The Babylon Citizens Council on the Arts (BACCA) will reach a very significant milestone in 2024 as it celebrates 50 years of supporting the arts in the Town of Babylon and beyond. BACCA serves as a platform and resource center for artists and community members by offering unique arts and cultural programming, instruction, development, and experiences. “I am excited to announce the beginning of a year-long celebration of BACCA’s 50 years of service to Babylon Township, its hamlets, villages and residents,” stated BACCA Board of Directors President Shawn Cullinane. “We look forward to hosting unique celebration events throughout 2024, and invite the community to join BACCA in commemorating this golden milestone.” Incorporated in 1974 by an enthusiastic group of volunteers with a vision, BACCA has grown to become a year-round sponsor of many activities including art classes and workshops, art exhibitions, live theatre productions, concerts, public arts projects, cultural presentations, children’s recitals, and varied opportunities for artists. Major recurring annual events include the Paumanauke Pow-Wow, the Long Island Bluegrass and Roots Music Festival,

the Annual Judged Art Show, and the SCALA/ BACCA Annual Student Art Show. “We are fortunate to have developed many new relationships with organizations and community groups, artists, municipalities, and small businesses. That, along with our members, is what makes what we do possible,” said BACCA Executive Director Liz Mirarchi. “It has been a joy and an honor to work with our partners on new programs, public arts projects, and the many ways we plan to continue to advocate for the arts and artists in our communities well beyond our 50th year.” Public Arts projects recently completed include a Community Arts Installation at 11 Park Drive in Wyandanch with the Albanese Development Corporation, fabricated by Spirit Ironworks, and designed by local artist Salinda Santiago. Sponsored by the Town of Babylon Local Development Corporation through the “Babylon Together Project,” a series of murals along the Cedar Beach underpass were completed by high school students from across the Town of Babylon, with their art teachers and artist Ron Becker, and supported by the Babylon Parks Department, and the Flower of Honor

Project on Straight Path in Wyandanch was unveiled, created by Fine Arts Photographer Harper Bella, highlighting Wyandanch Community Members. Through a grant from Creatives Rebuild New York Artist Employment Program (Tides Foundation), BACCA has completed various programs with artist administrators Harper Bella and Jose Tutiven. BACCA activities are held at Old Town Hall in Babylon Village, the Town Hall Annex in North Babylon, Wyandanch Plaza, and the BACCA Arts Center in Lindenhurst Village, as well as other locations throughout the Town of Babylon. Plans are currently being discussed for additional arts and cultural activities in an historic home in Amityville Village. To begin 2024, BACCA is announcing a Call to Artists to create a 50th Anniversary commemorative design, inviting the community to celebrate the occasion. Short-term actions Schedule an annual maintenance appointment for your furnace, boiler, or heat pump. They should be checked, cleaned, and repaired annually. This will: • Improve efficiency • Find small problems before they become big problems • Extend the life of your furnace Bleed radiators. Letting out air that gets trapped in your heating system will heat your home more effectively and reduce energy bills. If you hear pipes banging or gurgling, it’s a sign your system needs to be bled. Service chimneys. Also, close your fireplace damper if you’re not going to be using it and consider investing in a glass screen that lets heat radiate but prevents warm air from getting vented out the chimney. Weatherstrip doors and windows. A removable door draft stopper can make a big difference. Make sure air vents aren’t blocked. If furniture or curtains block your vents, the furnace works harder than it should to warm the house, driving fuel costs up. If you really like the position of furniture covering a vent, consider a low-cost vent extender. Conserve & Manage Energy Use Keep the thermostat between 68 and 70 degrees Fahrenheit while you’re awake, and lower when you’re asleep or away. Add insulation to walls and pipes. This is a very inexpensive way to reduce your energy bill. Focus on your attic because heat

rises, and this will keep heat in your living spaces. Also pay attention to electrical outlets, anywhere utilities enter the house, pipes (to prevent freezing and bursting), and appliances such as water heaters. Adjust ceiling fans. Run fans clockwise in winter to push rising warm air down, potentially enabling you to lower the thermostat. In the summer, run fans counterclockwise to create windchill. Unplug unused electronics. Also, consider switching to LED light bulbs, which are more energy efficient. Putting lights on a timer is both easy and cost-efficient. Put rugs on hardwood floors. This provides a layer of insulation and can warm up a room —both literally and figuratively. Open the curtains during the day and close them at night. Letting the sun in— even the weaker sunlight of winter—can help naturally

warm a room, while drawing shades and drapes at night helps keep heat in and prevents drafts. Thinking long-term Get a professional energy audit. The auditor will ask about your bills and check your home to make sure it’s properly sealed. If you’re income eligible, this audit could be free— along with additional discounted or no-cost services such as insulation and air sealing upgrades, new appliances and heating or cooling systems and more. National Grid is working to reduce power outages, which involves everything from the simple (trimming trees around lines) to the complex (installing smart meters and technology that automatically locates and isolates outages and restores service as quickly as possible). To make sure you and your family are prepared if the power does go out, do the following: • Keep a gallon of water per person per day in an easily accessible, airtight container • Have three days of nonperishable food on hand (including for your pets) • Put together a first aid kit • Make sure batteries work in flashlights, lanterns, radios etc.

• Keep matches, candles, flashlights, etc., where you can find them easily • Fully charge phones • Have extra medication at the ready • Fill your bathtub with water (for toilet flushing) • Turn refrigerator and freezer to coldest settings, keep doors closed as much as possible • Gas up the car If you have a generator, make sure it’s at least 20 feet away from the outside wall of your home. Suffolk Credit Union Partners With FHLBNY To Secure Grants For Local Organizations Suffolk Credit Union has given seven local non-profit organizations a boost with their budgets by helping them secure grants from the Federal Home Loan Bank of New York (FHLBNY) Small Business Recovery Grant (SBRG) Program. Suffolk Credit Union supported several non-profit organizations serving Long Islanders, by securing the Small Business Recovery Grant on their behalf with the FHLBNY. Three healthcare organizations received $10,000 each from the FHLBNY SBRG Program: St. Charles Foundation (Port Jefferson), St. Catherine of Sienna Foundation (Smithtown) and Good Samaritan University Hospital Foundation (West Islip). In addition, the Nassau Community College Foundation (Garden City), Brotherhood for the Fallen (Ronkonkoma), Suffolk Crime Stoppers (Yaphank) and New Beginnings Christian Church (Coram) received grants of $5,000 each.

“Our team is proud to demonstrate our support for organizations that do so much to support our Long Island communities,” said Michele Dean, CEO and President of Suffolk Credit Union. Under the SBRG Program, FHLBNY members, including Suffolk Credit Union, were able to provide grants to qualifying small businesses and non-profit organizations that have faced economic challenges due to the rate environment, inflation, supply-chain constraints and/or rising energy costs. Final decisions on the grant allocations were determined solely by the FHLBNY. “FHLBNY members have continued to step up and answer the call from customers and communities that are facing economic challenges,” said José R. A: As a primary care physician, my goal is to establish who you are on your best day in order to better help you on your worst day. It is important that we move away from looking at our health as a dichotomy between feeling sick and feeling well. Q: What are the important exams people should get annually? A: This will depend on your age, risk factors, lifestyle and medical history. For the healthy woman at average risk, hypertension, high cholesterol, breast cancer, cervical cancer, colon cancer, osteoporosis and heart disease are some

of the major conditions that have screening tools to help identify disease as early as possible. Healthy men at average risk should have screenings completed for hypertension, high cholesterol, prostate cancer, colon cancer and heart disease. Talk to your physician
