Workshops for the Winter Break
with Jamie Lynn Ryan Seen at the local supermarket last week: a gentleman piling each one of his items into his cart, refusing to pay the 5¢ plastic bag fee that was recently passed in Suffolk County. “Nope,” he shook his head vigorously. “I’ll throw it all in my backseat and carry every single item into my house by hand if I have to.” The checkout clerk, somewhat perplexed, acquiesced. “Alright,” she replied politely. “Whatever you’d prefer - that’s why we ask if you’d like a bag.” As he rolled his overflowing shopping cart away, fellow clerks exchanged raised eyebrows and shrugged. “It’s one thing when they have a handful of items, but $300 worth of food and perishables?” She seemed incredulous. “That’s really standing on principle.”
The clerk went on to list the bizarre scenarios she had witnessed over these last several weeks - from people juggling glass bottles (an attempt which, needless to say, didn’t end so well) to the woman who insisted on cradling about 5 pounds of meat in her arms. All to save a nickel. I have to admit, I was only vaguely aware that this proposed law was set to take effect until I found myself running into the store for some last minute New Year’s Eve snacks. Only then did I see the signs warning of the impending surcharge posted at each register, plastered on every entrance and exit, along with racks of “reusable” plastic bags for sale at each counter. I did some quick math: so, if I buy an allegedly sturdier bag for 10¢ - assuming I get more than two uses out of it, I’ll be

ahead of the game. I considered further the fact that, nearly every time I am in any sort of store but especially those of the supermarket variety - I am repeatedly amazed at the lack of, shall we say, bagging skills employed by most clerks. I invariably wind up with either 27 bags with one or two items in each, or the equally daunting 20 pound bag filled to the brim and unlikely to make it to the car without breaking, let alone up a flight of stairs into my apartment. I’ll bag my own, thanks, I always request. And now, if I’m going to pay for them, you can be sure I’ll be taking matters into my own hands. Preferably without an armful of glass bottles and pork chops to contend with as well. Just when food shopping was beginning to become routine…

Catholic Schools Week is the annual celebration of Catholic education in the United States. It starts the last Sunday in January, which in 2018 is January 28th, and runs through February 3th. The theme for the Catholic Schools Week 2018 is “Learn. Serve. Lead. Succeed.” Schools typically observe the annual celebration week with Masses, open houses and other activities for students, families, parishioners and community members. Through these events, schools focus on the value Catholic education provides to young people and its contributions to our church, our communities and our nation. On Long Island, Catholic Elementary Schools celebrate the week with Masses and open houses to thank parishioners, to welcome visitors and to introduce new families to the benefits of a Catholic education. These frequently kick off with a Mass and open house on the first Sunday (the 28th), and a series of events designed to recognize the contributions of students, parents and faculty during the course of the week. Many schools offer additional open houses and opportunities to visit during the week as well. LIGHTHOUSE MISSION!
“Providing Hope Beyond The Food” … this is a phrase often used at Lighthouse Mission, a mobile food pantry on Long Island. This non-profit reaches 2,000 people per week with the mission to share the Gospel of Jesus and feed the poor. Pastor Jim Ryan is the President of this inspiring ministry, and the story of his journey to become so is so inspiring that it left me speechless. After meeting with him and touring their quite busy facility, located at 1543 Montauk Highway in Bellport, I was extremely moved by all that I learned about and saw. Lighthouse Mission is a registered nonprofit that operates 100% on donations, receiving no government help. Their Food Outreach operates weekly on Mondays, Wednesdays, Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays (visit their website at www. LighthouseMission.com for a full Food Outreach Schedule). Instead of operating this outreach from a single location, Lighthouse Mission chose to go mobile and travel to different locations where those in need could line up to receive plenty of nutritional food, gently used clothing and hear the word of God from one of the pastors working the event. Pastor Jim Ryan
mentioned to me that they were inspired to operate this outreach in a mobile matter because the Gospel tells us that, when going to help others, Jesus traveled to them instead of having them to come to Him. Lighthouse Mission also has a Youth Outreach that operates on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Saturdays. Every Tuesday, they open their facility to high school students and offer them food, entertainment and time to socialize in a Christian setting. Every Wednesday, they do the same for middle school students; and on the first and third Saturday of each month, they offer this for students K-5. All of these events are free of charge and open to everyone. If you are interested in becoming involved with this organization, there are plenty of ways to do so. They gladly accept clothing and food donations and currently are in need of winter coats. As far as volunteering, they accept walk-on volunteers at all of their Food Outreach events. If you are interested in coming with a group to a Food Outreach event or are interested in volunteering at a Youth Outreach Event, please call their office at 631.758.7584 first for more information.

Sensitivity Training Launched Islip Town Supervisor Angie Carpenter today announced that in response to recent accounts in the media of sexual harassment in the workplace, and across a broad spectrum of industries, all Town employees will be required to participate in an antidiscrimination/sensitivity training course. All Town employees must complete the OSHA Training by Wednesday, January 24th. The bilingual, online training course will include a
quiz, and all employees will receive a certificate that will be forwarded to Personnel upon the employee’s completion of the training. This will be an annual requirement for all employees. “The Town of Islip has a zero tolerance policy for any type of harassment in the workplace. It is our responsibility to prevent harassment in the workplace, and to ensure a discriminationfree work environment for everyone. It is the
policy of the Town of Islip to do everything possible, to demonstrate, that any type of discrimination or harassment is unacceptable, and will never be tolerated. We believe that by providing the necessary tools and training to our employees, we can raise awareness and continue to maintain a safe, respectful, inclusive working environment in the Town of Islip,” said Islip Town Supervisor, Angie Carpenter.
100 YEARS YOUNG - Town of Islip resident Joseph Ferrara of Greenview Village in Islip, turned 100 years of age on Friday, January 12th, 2018. Islip Town Councilman John C. Cochrane, Jr. was in attendance Tuesday, alongside Joseph’s friends and family, to congratulate the centenarian, and present a certificate of recognition in honor of the grand occasion. Joseph Ferrara was born on January 12th, 1918, and is now the eldest resident in Greenview Village’s history.
Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone today announced that the county is now accepting nominations for the 2018 Senior Citizen of the Year Award. This award recognizes a senior citizen who has contributed to

One way to “tress to impress” is to experiment with some color. Well-placed highlights, balayage treatments, ombre or peek-a-boo underlights can add an extra spark to a bride’s normal hairstyle. Retro glamour

Errol D. Toulon, Jr., Ed.D. was sworn-in as the 67th Sheriff of Suffolk County at a ceremony on January 12th, 2018 at the Van Nostrand Theater at Suffolk County Community College (SCCC) in Brentwood. Governor Andrew M. Cuomo presided over the Oath of Office in front of hundreds of cheering family members, friends and supporters - among them, the Sheriff’s parents, Errol, Sr. and his mother, Alma. The Sheriff’s wife, Christina Toulon, held the family bible. More than forty dignitaries joined the Sheriff on the dais, including Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone, who gave welcoming remarks. A large contingent of law enforcement officials from New York City, the Suffolk County Sheriff’s Office, the Suffolk County Police Department and other agencies were also represented on the stage, along with SCCC President Shaun McKay, members of the clergy and the Veterans of Foreign Wars of Farmingville, Chapter 11. The Reverend Charles A. Coverdale of the First Baptist Church in Riverhead gave the closing remarks. Dan Gasby of East Hampton, New York was the Master of Ceremonies. Sheriff Toulon addressed the crowd during an inaugural speech in which he pledged to devote considerable resources to upgrading technology, equipment and training for staff. He also emphasized his goal to enhance “multi-agency information-sharing and intelligence gathering” directed at ridding the county of gang violence and the drug epidemic. He outlined a comprehensive list of priorities, some of which he has already

The mission of the Tomorrow’s Hope Foundation is to provide tuition assistance for families who want their children to attend a Catholic elementary school, but need financial help to make it possible. The Tomorrow’s Hope Foundation solicits donations from individuals and corporations, and allocates that money to families based on financial need. A Tomorrow’s Hope grant is awarded anonymously to the family to offset the tuition cost based on family income and expenses. Alternately, through the Tomorrow’s Hope STAR
Program, specific individual students are paired off with a STAR donor on a direct oneto-one basis. STAR program donors agree to contribute $2,500 a year in a donor/ student relationship that often lasts for the duration of the child’s elementary school journey. STAR donors and ‘their students’ have an ongoing dialogue and the donor gets to hear about, and participate in the academic career of a student. Since its inception in 2005, the Tomorrow’s Hope Foundation has distributed more than 20 million dollars in aid to over 17,000 qualifying students. Today,

Lego League Qualifiers Students from across Long Island are set to dive into a series of FIRST® LEGO® League Qualifiers – presented by SchoolBusiness Partnerships of Long Island, Inc. (SBPLI) – starting this weekend. Students (ages nine to 14) and their mentors from the program have worked hard to research, design, build, program and test LEGO robots that will best address the “Challenge” set forth in FIRST HYDRO DYNAMICSSM. For this challenge, students were tasked with identifying a problem within the human water cycle and finding a solution to the problem. Examples might include something as simple as quenching one’s thirst or swimming
in a pool, or as complicated as how water is used to produce food, energy and even technology, among other things. Once a problem was identified, the students then evaluated current solutions and subsequently designed, built and tested an innovative solution, using a LEGO MINDSTORMS® kit, that adds value to society. The students will then present the solution during one of six different Qualifier tournaments being held as follows: Great Hollow Middle School • Saturday, January 20 | 7 a.m. to 12 p.m. • Saturday, January 20 | 1 to 6 p.m.
• Sunday, January 21 | 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Mineola High School • Saturday, February 3 | 7 a.m. to 12 p.m. • Saturday, February 3 | 1 to 6 p.m. • Sunday, February 4 | 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Teams competing in the aforementioned events will then earn the opportunity to subsequently advance to the SBPLI FIRST LEGO League Championship tournament at Longwood High School on Sunday, March 4th.
