The YMCA of Long Island is a leading non-profit organization that works daily to improve lives through programs and services that nurture youth, foster healthy living and inspire social responsibility. Simply put, their mission is to improve the quality of life of children, adults and families through programs that develop body, mind and spirit. The Y of Long Island has many different branches: East Hampton, Patchogue, Holtsville, Huntington, Bay Shore and Glen Cove. They also run the Boulton Center for the Performing Arts in Bay Shore and the YMCA Family Services (a counseling center) in Holtsville. This January they kicked off their Annual Support Campaign, which provides scholarships to children, teens, adults, seniors and families in need. These scholarships provide access to the YMCA for membership, programs and services such as swim lessons, pre-school, before and after school, summer day camp, health and wellness programs and chronic disease prevention and recovery programs such as LIVESTRONG® at the YMCA for cancer survivors, Moving for Better Balance, a fall prevention program, EnhanceFitness for people with arthritis and more. The Y believes that when people come together for a common cause, the entire community is strengthened. When someone becomes
a volunteer, they have the opportunity to share their blessings with those who need it most. You can take an active role in strengthening your community by volunteering at the Y! Volunteers can serve on their Board of Directors/Board of Managers/ committees, raise funds to ensure their organization is accessible to all members of the community, motivate and support youth, extend a hand to help adults who want to do more, be more or live healthier, advocate for their efforts and participate in opportunities to give back and support neighbors. Performance by local dancers raises $4,750 to help families of children with congenital heart defects ISLIP, NY, JANUARY 14, 2020– On Sunday, December 15th the Dance Connection Performance Team and Dance Connection Theatrical Productions held a benefit performance at the CM Performing Arts Center in Oakdale to raise money for Gavin’s Got Heart, a local charity assisting families of infants and children diagnosed with congenital heart defects. The original production raised $4,750 for the charity, which will be used to offer financial assistance and support for these families in need. “At Dance Connection we feel that our passion for dance is meant to be shared and what better way than to use that passion than to give back to your community. The pride that our dancers feel knowing they brightened the holi-days
for their audience while raising money for a great cause is something that stays with them far beyond their dance classes.”, Mary Naftal, Artistic Director. Gavin’s Got Heart helps to subsidize medical bills, travel expenses associated with hospitalizations and medical care, and offset loss of wages for caregiver/parent(s). To date Gavin’s Got Heart has donated over $315,000 to 63 local heart families. Gavin’s Got Heart also provides free heart screenings, and CPR/AED training for the community through a partnership with Northwell Health and provides hospital outreach initiatives for heart families. The cast of 38 people worked to put the show together beginning in late September, with an original script by
Colleen M. Hughes, choreography by the Dance Connection Teaching Staff, and directed by Mary DeBorger. They were thrilled to be brought together after the holidays to present Nicole Mogil, the founder of Gavin’s Got Heart with the $4,750 raised by their efforts. Founded in September 1989, Dance Connection is an Islip based company whose mission is to create a welcoming and fun setting for proper performing arts education. With over 85 classes per week, students of all ages and abilities have a professional and exciting experience every day. Knights Of Columbus Forms New Council council starts with 47 founding members. Among them are 22 transfers from nearby councils, 20 new members, and 5 members that reapplied for their membership. NYS Deputy Walter J. Wych joined the council at their installation of Officers ceremony and personally installed Grand Knight, Raymond Mazzilli. Msgr. Brian J. McNamara Pastor of Our Lady of Lourdes was installed as the Council Chaplain. Grand Knight Raymond Mazzilli will make member recruitment, fundraising,
and assisting the Church with its ministries his priorities. The officers of the council were installed on January 13, 2020 at the Parish Center by 8th District Deputy Charles Shami. Grand Knights from the other councils in the 8th District, Guillermo Jimenes, St. Joseph the Carpenter, Robert Lodato, Our Lady of Grace and Leslie Small, Our Lady of the Miraculous Medal were in attendance to show their support.

The New York State Knights of Columbus has recently formed a new Parish based council in West Islip. The new council will be based out of Our Lady of Lourdes Parish located at 455 Hunter Avenue West Islip. During the preliminary meetings back in the fall of 2019, it was determined that the council will be named after the Parish, Our Lady of Lourdes Council No. 17379. The Supreme Office in Hartford, CT assigns the Council number. The

Each year, millions of people across the globe celebrate a unique holiday that is rich in tradition, spectacle and pageantry. The Chinese New Year, also known as the Lunar New Year or Spring Festival, is celebrated around the world, even by people who do not trace their heritage back to China. In China, Chinese New Year marks the end of the coldest days on the calendar and welcomes spring with new beginnings and the start of planting season. This spectacular holiday follows the lunar calendar, so there is no set date for the event. The Lunar New Year begins between January 21 and February 20 each year and lasts about 15 days. In 2020, the celebration begins on Saturday, January 25. Fireworks are a large part of Chinese New Year festivals. According to Chinese mythology, a monster named “Nian” would come about every New Year’s Eve, forcing people to hide in their homes. A brave boy fought Nian off using
fireworks, and the following day the public celebrated their survival by setting off even more pyrotechnics. Fireworks became a key component of celebrations from that point forward. Some other traditions associated with the holiday include burning fake paper money and printed gold bars in honor of deceased ancestors. It is believed these offerings will bring fortune and good luck to ancestors in the afterlife. Other customs include cleaning homes thoroughly prior to the dawn of the new year, welcoming family for a big reunion and avoiding activities deemed to be taboo. Such activities may include hair cutting, using scissors and other sharp objects, arguing, saying unlucky words, or breaking things. Children receive money tucked inside of red envelopes to help transfer fortune from elders to younger generations. In addition to red envelopes, homes and decorations are adorned in red. The red color was purported to be instrumental in scaring
away Nian and bringing about luck. Another component of Chinese New Year is the Chinese zodiac. One animal represents the entire year, and there are 12 different animals. The animal a person is born under can help decide his or her career, health and relationship status. 2020 is the year of the Rat. The Rat is associated with wealth and surplus and also is known to be a clever, quick thinker. The Rat is successful, but content to live a peaceful life. The Chinese believe your ben ming nian, or the year of your zodiac animal, is the unluckiest for you because it is a rebirth year and a time when children can easily be taken by evil spirts. Wearing red all year is a defense against this. Those born in 1936, 1948, 1960, 1972, 1984, 1996, and 2008 are all born under the Rat. Chinese New Year is a spectacle that Chinese and non-Chinese alike can behold.
