American Heart Association Warns Of Snow Shoveling Health Hazards The American Heart Association says that for most people, shoveling snow may not lead to any health problems. However, the association warns that the risk of a heart attack during snow shoveling may increase for some, as the combination of colder temperatures and physical exertion increases the workload on the heart. People who are outdoors in cold weather should avoid sudden exertion, like lifting a heavy shovel full of snow. Even walking through heavy, wet snow or snow drifts can strain a person’s heart. For those who are sedentary, or people with existing heart conditions like heart failure, high blood pressure or cholesterol, the increased workload on the heart from activities such as shoveling of heavy snow, can put them at higher risk for heart attack—where a clot blocks blood flow to a heart artery causing

the heart muscle damage or tissue death. This is a life-threatening medical emergency. To help make snow removal safer, the American Heart Association has compiled a list of practical tips. · Give yourself a break. Take frequent rest breaks during shoveling so you don’t overstress your heart. Pay attention to how your body feels during those breaks. · Don’t eat a heavy meal prior or soon after shoveling. Eating a large meal can put an extra load on your heart. · Use a small shovel or consider a snow thrower. The act of lifting heavy snow can raise blood pressure acutely during the lift. It is safer to lift smaller amounts more times, than to lug a few huge shovelfuls of snow. When possible, simply push the snow. · Learn the heart attack warning signs and

Often people affected aren’t sure what’s wrong and wait too long before getting help. Here are signs that can mean a heart attack is happening: · Chest discomfort. Most heart attacks involve discomfort in the center of the chest that lasts more than a few minutes, or that goes away and comes back. It can feel like uncomfortable pressure, squeezing, fullness or pain. · Discomfort in other areas of the upper body. Symptoms can include pain or discomfort in one or both arms, the back, neck, jaw or stomach. · Shortness of breath with or without chest discomfort. · Other signs may include breaking out in a cold sweat, nausea or lightheadedness · As with men, women’s most common heart attack symptom is chest pain or discomfort. But women are somewhat more likely than men to experience some of the other common

symptoms, particularly shortness of breath, nausea/vomiting, and back or jaw pain. Call 9-1-1 emergency medical services (EMS) for rapid transport to the emergency room and treatment when they arrive on the scene. Don’t drive yourself--have someone drive you to the hospital right away. Heart attacks can cause sudden cardiac arrest, where the heart stops beating, or beats irregularly, failing to pump enough blood. If a victim is unresponsive, not breathing or only gasping, quick recognition and fast action are the keys to saving a life. What You Can Do Bystanders can help cardiac arrest victims survive, if they act fast. First, call 9-1-1 and start CPR right away. Then, if an Automated External Defibrillator (AED) is available, use it as soon as possible. If two people are available to help, one should begin CPR immediately while the other calls 9-1-1 and finds an AED. Hands Only CPR is effective in saving lives during cardiac arrest. Hands-Only CPR has just two simple steps. If you see a teen or adult suddenly collapse, (1) Call 9-1-1; and (2) Push hard and fast in the center of the chest to the beat of the disco song “Stayin’ Alive” (100 beats per minute) until help arrives. External Diploma Program The External Diploma Program offers adults 21 and over, the opportunity to receive credit for their life experiences, and earn a high school equivalency diploma without the challenge of taking lengthy timed examinations. EDP, is a competency based

program for students who are unable to attend classes or who prefer to work at home. Successful candidates for EDP include former ESL students, students who have been out of school for prolonged periods of time, or students who fare better without

Co-Workers Donate Toys And Send Cards To Neighbors Across Long Island

The holidays were a little brighter across Long Island, thanks to the generosity and thoughtfulness of PSEG Long Island employees. By participating in the Salvation Army’s Angel Tree Program, an employee-led toy drive and a holiday greeting card campaign, dozens of coworkers helped spread cheer and hope this holiday season for neighbors in need. More than 120 co-workers fulfilled holiday wishes for 105 Suffolk County children enrolled in the Salvation Army’s Angel Tree program. From bikes, tablets and video games, to toys, dolls and action figures, several hundred gifts were donated in all. A handful of PSEG Long Island employees also helped distribute the goodies and load clients’ vehicles the week before Christmas at the Salvation Army’s Riverhead headquarters. Here’s what some employees said about participating: “I am happy to carry on this tradition that my family started when I was a kid,” said Ashley Arndt of Dix Hills. “We always sponsored a family in need and it felt so good to support these sweet

boys and girls. I am thankful that PSEG Long Island is committed to supporting our community and helping our neighbors and friends. This company makes it easy to help so many diverse people across Long Island.” “Being raised by a single mom of three children, I remember how important it was for my mom to have access to a program like this that would allow for a few more gifts to be put under the tree on Christmas morning, said Brittney Schmidt of Smithtown. “I am happy that now I’m able to give to other families. I am also grateful to work for a company that values the importance to giving back to our communities.” “Participating in the Salvation Army Angel Tree Program over the years has always been a rewarding experience that brings to light the spirit of Christmas,” said Diane Finocchio of Farmingdale. “I’ve been supporting the Angel Tree program since my start with PSEG Long Island,” said Krysten Acevedo of Center Moriches. “I do it because I hate the idea of a child waking up on Christmas

morning to nothing under their tree and wondering what it was they did to get on Santa’s naughty list.” The Salvation Army’s Angel Tree program serves Long Island children from newborn to 16 years old, and relies on the support of individual donors, companies and organizations to make lasting impressions by fulfilling the wish lists of children and families who might otherwise not receive gifts. During the past eight years, PSEG Long Island employees have donated presents to more than 1,200 families who live in the company’s service area. It’s just one of the many ways in which the company gives back to the community. An employee-led toy collection drive was also hosted. More than $1,600 in dolls, board games, electronic toys, trucks, gift cards and more were given to the following organizations to distribute to local children and their families: In Suffolk County: • Bellport Hagerman East Patchogue Alliance in Bellport • Family Service League in Mastic •First Presbyterian Church of Northport • Gerald Ryan Outreach Center in Wyandanch • Lighthouse Mission in Bellport • Sunshine Alternative

Education & Prevention Center in Port Jefferson Station In Nassau County: • Five Towns Community Center in Lawrence • Hempstead Hispanic Civic Association • Long Island Council of Churches in Freeport • Mary Brennan INN Soup Kitchen and Center for Transformative Change Resource Center in Hempstead • NAACP Hempstead Branch • Queen of the Most Holy Rosary Roman Catholic Church in Roosevelt • The United Methodist Church of Hempstead These agencies, along with several senior centers, assisted living homes and hospitals were also sent

holiday cheer in the form of greeting cards. Nearly 1,000 PSEG Long Island employees participated, offering their own personal holiday messages in the cards that featured the image of a snowy PSEG Long Island bucket truck. The cards were delivered along with candy canes, LED night lights or large print puzzle books to the organizations above, as well as the following: • The Bristal Assisted Living communities across the area • EAC Network Senior Community Service Center in North Merrick and distributed through the agency’s Meals on Wheels program • Glen Cove Senior Center • Glen Cove YMCA • Northport Veterans

Affairs Medical Center • The Northwell Health Orzac Center for Rehabilitation in Valley Stream • The Northwell Health Stern Family Center for Rehabilitation in Manhasset • The United Methodist Church of Hempstead • Huntington YMCA Along with providing safe, reliable power, community service is an important part of PSEG Long Island’s culture. Employees demonstrate their care and support for their neighbors through many community service projects and activities throughout the year. A complementary program to the organization’s already existing trust and financial services, the Life’s WORC Planned Giving Program will enable donors to create a lasting legacy that benefits Life’s WORC and those it serves, while also giving donors significant financial benefits. According to Life’s WORC’s CEO Janet Koch, “Our donors are vital to our ability to fulfill our mission. Providing another way that enables them to help those we serve and address their financial goals prompted us to develop the Planned Giving Program. It is a natural extension of our other financial services and will enable Life’s WORC to be a better resource to both individuals with disabilities and their families, as well as a broader cross-section of the community.” The Life’s WORC Planned Giving Program offers donors various options. These include: gifts that use appreciated assets as a substitute for cash, gifts that return income or other financial benefits to the donor in return for his/ her contribution, and gifts payable upon the donor’s demise through his/her estate planning. Life’s WORC Board Member Ron Aghassi, a single parent of a 20-year old special needs child who lives in a Life’s WORC home noted, “When I made the decision to place

my son, Jacob, in a Life’s WORC home, I felt like a great fear was released. As a single parent, even though I am not old and am in good health, I always worried what would happen to Jacob if something happened to me. Thanks to Life’s WORC, I no longer have that fear. As a young reporter, Geraldo Rivera exposed the deplorable conditions that existed within the then largest institution in the nation serving children with developmental disabilities. Rivera first learned about these conditions from Life’s WORC founder Victoria Schneps Yunis. Her daughter, Lara, diagnosed at an early age with severe brain damage, was a resident at Willowbrook. When cuts in state funding caused the institution to fall into extensive disrepair, Schneps, along with other concerned individuals, picketed to fight for the rights of Willowbrook’s more than 5,000 residents. Rivera’s report, which earned him a Peabody Award, ultimately forced the closing of Willowbrook. Schneps Yunis started Life’s WORC and opened its first home in Little Neck, Queens. Its first residents were former Willowbrook residents. Today, Life’s WORC provides beautiful homes located across the region, from Nassau and Suffolk to Queens and Manhattan, in addition to community services, financial and trust services, and the programs and services of its Family Center for Autism. New York Marine Rescue Center (NYMRC) will be able to expand its marine conservation and educational programs through a multi-year grant from Bank of America, after being named as a 2021 Bank of America Neighborhood Builders® awardee for its impactful work on Long Island. This comes as the center prepares to treat sea turtles impacted by cold stunning a phenomenon similar to hypothermia, which occurs annually on Long Island in the fall and winter months when sea turtles are exposed to cold water for extended periods. As a Neighborhood Builder, NYMRC receives $200,000 in unrestricted funding over two years as well as leadership training on topics ranging from increasing financial sustainability, human capital management and strategic storytelling, joins a network of peer organizations across the U.S. The program continues to be the nation’s largest investment into nonprofit leadership development. NYMRC has seen an increased need for marine rehabilitation services as changing ocean temperatures disrupt marine environments, while experiencing a decrease in volunteers due to coronavirus. Being one of the largest rehabilitation facilities in the region, during the 2020/2021 cold stun season, the NYMRC took in an additional 29 sea turtles from network partners due to limited space within the network. Additionally, the center is expanding its educational programs to reach schools not only on Long Island but in Florida and Puerto Rico, expanding knowledge of marine ecosystems and inspiring young people to participate in conservation
