So… how is everyone’s year coming along so far? Are we still avidly pursuing our New Year’s resolutions, or have we moved on to other, more realistic, goals? Sure, we’re only slightly more than two weeks underway into 2017, but even the most promising “fresh starts” have been known to bite the dust not even a few days in to a new year. Personally, I don’t see the point. Chances are, the second something negative happens, your entire motivation will be thrown off anyway; so, rather than give yourself unnecessary reason for disappointment, keep your goals open and flexible – much like life. The best-laid plans more often than not do not go according to any pre-conceived notion of how things are “supposed” to transpire. The sooner we
realize this, and accept it, the better off we will be in the long run. Take the weather, for instance. Mother Nature is not a force that can be predicted, especially at this time of year. Make all the plans you wish; chances are, they will be forced into “rain check” mode far too frequently. Personally, I’ve already had an entire weekend’s worth of appointments and obligations squashed due to snow, and have tentatively (fingers crossed) rescheduled for the next available opportunity. To be continued… until spring, most likely. And then there are the roads. Traveling on Long Island is a skill to be mastered under the best of circumstances. Throw in some inclement weather and it’s a regular three ring circus, complete with a collection of characters who
either A) should not be on the road at all, in any season; or B) had best make like the groundhog and hibernate for the duration of the winter. Crawling, speeding, braking unnecessarily, swerving all over the road… such are just a few examples of the skills witnessed daily on my fairly brief commute to and from work. Throw in a flurry or two, and forget about it. Such is the state of life in January. And if not now, there are similar factors to face each and every subsequent month of the year. So take your resolutions – or whatever form of self-improvement you have documented for yourself in 2017 – keep them in your back pocket as a reminder, and move onward and upward. There will be a rainbow over the horizon soon enough. Just don’t drive off the road admiring it.

The assembly was complete with donkeys, camels, sheep, the Three Wise Men, Joseph, Mother Mary and Baby Jesus. Mrs. Cora McGerald worked for months with the first and second grade students to treat
the congregation to songs, prayer, poems and a reenactment of the Nativity Story. With a homily focused on how Jesus is the reason for the season, young and old alike attending the Mass felt a little closer to the true spirit of Christmas. Continuing to the true end of the Christmas season, students performed a magnificent musical and play just
before the Ephiphany or Three Kings Day Under the talented tutelage of Mrs. Angela Sandkuhl, the entire school stepped up to take part in a beautiful performance, reminding us all that although the 12 Days of Christmas had been at a close, each of us can live as if it is Christmas every day, with joy in our hearts and charity in our thoughts and actions.

Islip Town Councilman John Cochrane, Jr. wishes to remind residents of the services for local veterans that are available through his office. Councilman Cochrane, who served as a Captain (ret.) in the United States Navy, has been at the forefront of veterans issues in our community, and has been an advocate for veterans’ services and initiatives. In particular, there are two programs that can help veterans throughout Suffolk County. The first is the Pfc. Joseph R. Dwyer Project, which aides veterans suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Councilman Cochrane’s office can help local veterans get started with this program. In addition, the Councilman and his staff can help veterans and their families navigate the DD214 filing process with Suffolk County. It is imperative that veterans have their paperwork on record with the County in order to receive their due benefits. “When I was elected to the Town Board, I promised that I would be a tireless advocate for our local veterans. Our community owes a debt to those who have served their nation, and we have a responsibility to ensure that our veterans are given the help that they need to stay healthy and to succeed,” said Councilman Cochrane. On January 20th, 2017, Donald J. Trump will be sworn in as the 45th President of the United States of America. The Transition of Power from one President to the next President is a tradition that has always ensured a peaceful and seamless changeover to the incoming new administration. Throughout this particular election cycle, beginning with the primaries and going through Election Day - and still continuing to this day - our country has been very divided. It is now time for everyone to accept the results of the choice of the American people and stand together behind this new administration. There have been many times in history that the Transition of Power has been tested. Some examples of these times were the transitions between President Kennedy to President Lyndon B. Johnson after Kennedy was assassinated;
President Nixon to President Gerald Ford after Nixon had to resign; and President Clinton to President George W. Bush after the 2000 election recounts. In all cases, the American people ultimately accepted the outcomes and showed respect to the Office of the Presidency of the United States of America. They did the right thing and worked together for the good of our country. We are now at the same point, and we all need to support our new incoming President. The disrespect and negativity that so many are displaying is a complete disgrace and an embarrassment to all of us and to our country worldwide. President Elect Trump’s priorities of jobs, better trade deals, strengthening our military, a new, improved and more affordable healthcare system, schools controlled at the state level, childcare assistance, tax
adjustments, cutting unnecessary government spending, reducing the national debt, securing our borders to keep America safe from terrorists, drugs and criminals, and always keeping America and Americans first will all begin January 20th, 2017. We have already seen some of President Elect Trump’s positive accomplishments, even before he has taken office. He has succeeded at keeping several large companies’ plants open and operating here in the USA, such as Carrier and Ford. This has saved many jobs and already helped many Americans. We should all be looking forward to many more positive actions and results from this new administration. We are one country, and we should all have and work toward common goals. January 20th, 2017 is our opportunity. God Bless the United States of America!

High Achievers West Islip High School seniors Emily Beier and Drew Cestaro were recognized as 2016-2017 winners by the Suffolk Zone Chapter of the New York State Association for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance at the organization’s annual awards dinner, held at the Hyatt Regency Long Island in Hauppauge on December 7th. The awards are given to students who best exemplify exceptional
physical performance, character, and citizenship. Beier serves as captain of the varsity field hockey and lacrosse teams, earning All-State and All-County honors, respectively. An active member of the West Islip student senate and ACE peer mediator, she has volunteered for the annual Walk to End Alzheimer’s and will play lacrosse for Loyola University this fall. Cestaro is a member of the varsity football and
lacrosse teams, serving as captain of the former and earning football All-County honors. He volunteered for the annual Sounds of Silence 5K Run last spring. Holiday Adoption Program
Creative fifth graders at West Islip’s Oquenock Elementary School recently constructed ice cream cones out of recycled materials, clay and Styrofoam. The project was the work of the Oquenock Art Club, an after-school group that meets once a
Meg Smith and Associates Real Estate recently held a Holiday Adoption Program, “Tidings for Tweens and Teens,” which was started eight years ago by one of the agents, Laura Prince Vomvos. Laura wanted to create a program that catered to
the older children, where Toys for Tots left off. This year, the program provided gifts for 56 families and 165 kids. Individuals “adopt” the children; or, in some cases, groups like the Bay Shore Lions and private donors donate larger sums of money to adopt larger
groups of kids. The children’s names are provided by local school districts, churches, shelters or local non-profits that deal with specific clientele that need help. Thanks to all for their generosity this holiday season!

National Wear Red Day The American Heart Association is uniting with companies, community organizations, families and friends to “Go Red” and “Glow Red” on Friday, February 3rd to spread the message that heart disease and stroke cause 1 in 3 deaths among women each year – more than all cancers combined. Thousands of Long Isla will participate in National Wear Red Day by donating $5 to the Go Red For Women campaign. In turn, they will receive a
red dress pin or wristband, and lifesaving heart health education. Some organizations will offer heart healthy lunch and learn programs, organize healthy walks, or offer healthier foods in vending machines or cafeterias. Additionally, landmarks and buildings around the state will illuminate in red to help raise awareness to women’s heart health. According to the American Heart Association, this is such a simple way to raise
awareness and celebrate heart health. By Going Red and Glowing Red, the American Heart Association reminds women, and all of Long Island, how important our hearts are. February is the perfect time to learn more about your heart health and make positive, healthy changes. Over $1 million has been donated to Long Island charities since LIFFC’s founding. is not required. What is required is a commitment to fundraising, “character,” a willingness to train and be ready to meet a business colleague toeto-toe in the ring in front of a thousand fans. Faculty Art Exhibit The Suffolk County Community College Faculty Art Exhibit replete with rich visual works from the Eastern Campus’ art faculty will be on display at the college’s Lyceum Gallery from January 23rd to February 25th, 2017. An artists’ reception open
to the general public will be held on Thursday, February 9th, 2017. Exhibited will be faculty works of art in a wide range of media including: • the black and white landscape photography of Professor John Stefanik of Sag Harbor,
who teaches 2D Design and The History of Photography • Professor Meredith Starr of Plainview, who teaches Drawing, 2D Design and Modern Art History, will show her ink and mixed media works on paper
• Professor Denise Fehr of Manorville, who teaches Color Theory, will exhibit her fired glass works • Professor Beth Giles of North Haven, who teaches Drawing and Art Appreciation, will exhibit her handmade
paper reliefs containing her printmaking imagery. Gallery hours are Monday-Thursday from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m., Friday from 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. and Saturday from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. The Gallery is closed on Sundays and
