For each donated pair of pajamas, Scholastic donates a book, and the Pajama Program distributes the pajamas and new books to children in need. Thanks to all those who participated in this event.

Successful Strivers The Suffolk Zone Chapter of the New York State Association for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance recently recognized West Islip seniors Daniel Mottes and Paige Sherlock as winners of this school year’s Suffolk Zone Awards. The two were honored at a gala awards dinner on December 2nd at the Hyatt Regency Long Island in Hauppauge. The annual Suffolk Zone award is given to a male and female physical education student in each county high school who each best exemplifies exceptional
physical performance, character and citizenship. Sherlock, an active member of the school’s science research competition team, was named captain of the varsity girls soccer team this past fall and was a leader on West Islip’s 2015 girls lacrosse state championship team. She has provided more than 80 hours of community service and looks forward to attending LIU Post this fall, where she will play soccer and lacrosse for the Pioneers. “Paige prides herself on striving for excellence both
academically and athletically, and her vibrant spirit and enthusiasm can be seen in everything she does,” said Athletic Director Tim Horan. “She believes that success in physical education will lead to success throughout her life.” Steadfastly appearing on the principal’s list every quarter, Mottes is an active member of West Islip’s National Honor Society and Foreign Language Honor Society. Serving as captain of the varsity lacrosse team, where he received AllDivision honors, he has also been a major contributor
on the varsity football team. Mottes selflessly completed more than 70 hours of community service and helps coach youth lacrosse in West Islip. In the fall, he will attend Binghamton University, where he will play for the Bearcats lacrosse program. “Daniel continues to accept every challenge that comes his way,” said Horan. “He has maintained an A+ average in physical education, and with his determination and strong will, he can accomplish everything he sets his mind to.”

Pajama Party Students in Justin J. DeMaio’s fifth-grade class at West Islip’s Bayview Elementary School brought in pairs of new pajamas during the holiday season as part of Scholastic’s Great Bedtime Story Pajama Drive.
The initiative strives to teach students the value of giving and the power of reading. For each donated pair of pajamas, Scholastic donates a book, and the Pajama Program distributes the pajamas and new books to children
in need. “My class is trying to share with others the many comforts we take for granted,” said DeMaio. “Who doesn’t enjoy getting into bed with a nice pair of pajamas and a good book?”

Suffolk County Legislator Kevin McCaffrey recently attended the Eagle Court of Honor for Troop 179’s Bryan John Beard, who hails from North Babylon. The ceremony took place at Our Lady of Lourdes Church in West Islip, and was attended by officials or their representatives from state and local government, scouts of all ages, and the proud family of Bryan. The path that an Eagle Scout candidate must travel is a challenging one to say the least. In addition to earning a slew of merit badges, each candidate must complete a service project as the capstone requirement. The project must be designed to benefit the community, and everything from its planning to execution must be orchestrated by the Scout. This is no small task, as projects of this nature more often than not require a variety

The guests have gone. The last of the leftovers have been eaten. Presents have been tried on, shown off, returned; in some cases, re-gifted. The decorations have been packed away for another year. The holiday season, which we look forward to each year with such eager anticipation… gone in a matter of days. I’m experiencing a little holiday withdrawal myself. There is something about taking down the Christmas tree, unplugging the lights one last time and surveying a now barren-looking home that just feels… well, depressing is what it feels. Downright melancholy, in fact. Gone is the sparkle of the season.
Apologies to those with birthdays and other similarly cheery milestones in the month of January, but, with the exception of New Year’s Day, it seems that nothing particularly exciting occurs until the groundhog makes his scheduled appearance on February 2nd – and that, only in the case of his shadow being absent, signaling the coming of spring. Not that we should be complaining about the winter weather we’ve been having up to this point. A light dusting of snow once, temperatures hovering above normal for much of the last several months – we have been quite fortunate compared to the last several winters. Unless you favor the four-hour commute home
on Long Island’s slippery roadways with hundreds of your fellow drivers, the backbreaking shoveling and the bone chilling frost, we are holding up quite well thus far. Sure January is the month of new beginnings and attempts to overhaul our lives. What better time to get those finances in order, shred old documents, do some deep cleaning around the house? Of course, none of these things evokes quite the same sense of excitement as celebrations with family and friends, productive though they may be. Such is January. Such is winter. Such is life. As Billy Joel sang, “It’s either sadness or euphoria.” Rarely anything in between.

Good Character A total of 60 West Islip High School students, including 28 current seniors, earned AP Scholar status for 2015, granted by the College Board to students who receive scores of 3 or higher on three or more AP exams. They were among 290 West Islip students who sat for 464 AP exams in the 20142015 school year. The senior AP Scholars were Charles Allegretto, Shane Arnold, Dylan Beasley, Meghan Bevan, Matthew Boniberger, Sean Burke, Daniel Cameron, Joseph Castine, Nikita Favarolo, Kelsey Flannery, Lindsey Gellar, Charles Hetterich, Liam Kelly, James Khoury, Hannah Kim, Gregory Lucci, Matthew Mastroianni, Sara Mercurio, Palma Millet, Daniel Mottes, Alexander Moy, Conner Muraglio, Aidan Nowakowski, Joseph Rivera, Daniel Rosenson, Dominique Sarcona, Ryan Small and Matthew Troiano. One graduate from West Islip’s Class of 2015, salutatorian Eric Harris, received the top designation of National
AP Scholar, reserved for students who received an average score of at least 4 on all AP exams taken and scores of 4 or higher on eight or more of these exams. A dozen students earned AP Scholar with Distinction status, including two current seniors as well as 10 graduates. This award is achieved by receiving an average score of at least 3.5 on AP exams and scores of 3 or higher on five or more of these exams. Eight current seniors were among 13 named as AP Scholars with Honor, earned by those who receive an average score of at least 3.25 on all of their AP exams and scores of 3 or higher on four or more of those exams. These outstanding academic achievers all received award certificates from the College Board, a nonprofit organization that provides services that help students transition to college. Its role includes administering the AP program, in which high school students are provided with AP course and exam experiences.
Colleges recognize the achievement of AP students, who demonstrate through successful course completion that they are ready for the challenges of higher education. “I am very proud of our students,” said Dr. Anthony D. Bridgeman, the principal. “They are artistic, athletic, creative and academically strong, but most importantly, they are of good character. These students are involved in every aspect of the school community, including music, art, honor societies, athletics and community service activities. They exemplify what it means to educate the whole child.”
